  • Patent number: 6951258
Abstract: A hollow auger head assembly for penetrating geological formations that utilizes drill bit assemblies to which both blades and finger bits are attached. The method of securing the individual drill bit assemblies to the auger head reduces incidents of the drill bit assembly becoming detached from the auger head during drilling operations. Additionally, a rust-resistant attachment mechanism is used attach the drill bit assemblies to the auger head, which makes the drill bit assemblies easier to remove and replace. The configuration and arrangement of the bits improves cutting efficiency, increases wear life and reduces the likelihood of the bits breaking during operation.

  • Patent number: 6915654
Abstract: An evaporative cooling system that can be easily transported and set up quickly in indoor or outdoor environments to provide effective cooling to a sizable area in a short time period. The system can be operated from standard AC household electrical power, or from a 12-volt DC power source, such as a car or marine battery. The system water tank can be filled with water, or connected to a water source for continual refilling. The system can also be used with a light-weight water source, holding approximately 2 liters of water for temporary cooling, or without water to move large volumes of air.

  • Patent number: 6883985
Abstract: A functional and decorative key mask is disclosed that is printable and has a uniquely functional geometry for easy and clean removable attachment to the keyfaces of a keyboard or keypad. The materials and design combine to provide a durable and reusable key mask. In the preferred embodiment, the key mask is has a body and a tab extending outward, and a pressure sensitive adhesive adhered to the back surface. It is die-cut from a face stock that is attached by the adhesive to a coated release liner. Mask sets include several key masks having similar or individualized graphic illustrations that enable the user to make unique associations with the keys of the keyboard or keypad, and thus enhance their learning, skill, performance, and enjoyment of a standard keyboard or keypad, or one having specialized key assignments.

  • Patent number: 6070073
Abstract: A communication system and methodology are implemented to anticipate periodic or predictable disruptions of communications in a satellite communication network. The communication system and methodology then compensate for this disruption in an appropriate manner. Such prediction and compensation actions are performed for a selected group of subscribers ("premium" subscribers) who wish to originate or receive telephone calls during the period of time that the outage or disruption occurs. To compensate for such predictable outages, the communication network takes advantage of the multiple gateways typically implemented within mobile satellite communicate networks. Rather than using the multiple gateways for redundancy, the communication network and methodology recognize that the multiple gateways may also be used for the alternate routing of telephone calls, particularly during a period of time in which the outage occurs. Through this methodology, a "virtual routing" operation may be executed.

  • Patent number: 6049564
Abstract: A method for configuring a spread spectrum cellular network for small-cell inclusion, by providing a finite series of PN-offsets, each PN-offset is separated by a constant value that is allotted to the spread spectrum cellular network. The finite series is portioned into a first and a second set. The second set subsequent to the first set and having sufficient PN-offset elements for a PN-offset reuse pattern having a plurality of cells, each cell having similar transmission characteristics. The second set is assigned to the PN-offset reuse pattern, deploying the cellular reuse pattern for a cellular network. Small cells are insertable into the spread spectrum cellular network by assigning the first set to a PN-offset reuse pattern having a plurality of small cells arranged in a small-cell reuse pattern, and deploying the small-cell reuse pattern.

  • Patent number: 5978809
Abstract: A method for increasing the capabilities of an object program of a digital data processing system having a coded character set, with each character having a given attribute, by providing each of a selected subset, or subsets, of said characters with a second attribute. Which attribute of a given character of such a subset is its relevant attribute is determined by such a character being the operand of a limited number of operation codes of the computer system capable of properly acting on the second attribute of the character of such a selected subset. The data entry routine of such a program is modified to require data represented by the second attributes of the selected subsets and to convert such data into a character of such a subset.

  • Patent number: 5970199
Abstract: A frame is provided for relieving stress on a cable splice. The frame includes a pair of rails spaced apart to accommodate a splice enclosure. At least one mounting plate is coupled to spaces of the rails for detachably mounting the splice enclosure. A strain relief is coupled to the rails for receiving a cable and isolating the weight of the cable from a splice of the cable disposed within the splice enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5951596
Abstract: Biological tissue of a living subject is irradiated with optical energy at a wavelength and at a power dissipation level to cause the amount of optical energy absorbed and converted to heat in the tissue to be within a range bounded by a minimum absorption rate sufficient to elevate the average temperature of the irradiated tissue to a level above the basal body temperature, but which is less than the absorption rate at which tissue is converted into a collagenous substance. According to this method, a therapeutic, warming effect is produced within the irradiated tissue, but without causing tissue damage by thermal overheating.

  • Patent number: 5941370
Abstract: The design of electrical switches that operate under load (with current flowing) requires replacement of the electrical contact after erosion and wear experienced by arcing reduce functionality below acceptable limits. A quantity of trace element or compound is implanted at a depth representative of the point at which wear or erosion requires contact replacement. When exposed by wear or erosion, the quantity of the trace element is released into the oil or other medium surrounding the contact, providing an indication of excessive wear.

  • Patent number: 5915220
Abstract: A system and method is implemented within a telecommunications network, such as a cellular telephone network, for maintaining updated profile information for each mobile subscriber registered within the network. Updated profile information about each mobile subscriber is maintained within a particular mobile switching center currently communicating with the particular mobile subscriber. This process is performed with minimal utilization of bandwidth between the various mobile switching centers in the telecommunications network by maintaining subscriber service profile information within mobile switching centers, even though the associated mobile subscriber has roamed from that mobile switching center. When the subscriber service profile information is updated, then the subscriber service profile information is downloaded to a mobile switching center currently serving the mobile subscriber.

  • Patent number: 5896265
Abstract: A surge suppressor for a radio frequency (RF) transmission line includes an a printed circuit board having a conductor for connection in series with a RF transmission line. The conductor has a capacitance for passing RF signals and blocking transients. To the printed circuit board are mounted a choke and a resistor, each of which is connected in series with the transmission line and in parallel to each other and to the capacitance of the conductor. The choke passes steady, direct current signals for powering equipment located on an antenna. The surge suppressor further includes first and second discharge stages connected to the conductor on opposite sides of the impedance. Each stage includes a discharge device connected to the conductor through a radio frequency choke or resonant circuit. The choke or resonant circuit blocks leakage of radio frequencies into the discharge devices. A gas discharge tube is used for the first stage, which is for connection to an antenna side of the surge suppressor.
