    Abstract: The present invention relates to a scanning system optimized for lidar that includes a nodding mirror, a rotary electromagnetic drive, a rotary optical encoder, and control circuitry. The rotary electromagnetic drive includes a yoke incorporating a permanent magnet, and an arm having a coil at one end of the arm. The coil is enclosed within the yoke, and an opposite end of the arm is coupled to the nodding mirror, such that movement of the coil within the yoke in response to a current causes the nodding mirror to rotate. The rotary optical encoder produces an output signal in response to rotation of the nodding mirror, which serves as feedback to the control circuitry. The control circuitry adjusts the current provided to the rotary electromagnetic drive in response to the output signal, such that the nodding mirror rotates in a reference scan pattern.

    Abstract: An antenna steering mount includes two basic building blocks which are joined together to form any of the known steering-axis combinations. Each block includes a cylinder cut at an angle to form a cylindrical wedge. The wedges are joined together by bearings at their interface, and motors are used to counter rotate the two wedges relative to each other. One end of the complete assembly is attached to a mounting platform, and the other end includes mounting features for attaching an antenna dish thereto. Various two- and three-axis steering configurations are disclosed including combinations of azimuth, elevation, cross-elevation, and cross-level steering.

    Abstract: A two-axis tiltable linear array of MEMS micromirrors is described. The individual micromirrors of the array are flexibly suspended over a common substrate by using two pairs of serpentine hinges coupled by a gimbal ring and are actuated by using tilt and roll electrodes. The tilt actuator regions of the micromirrors are disposed within the gimbal rings, the roll hinges connecting the tilt actuator regions to the micromirrors, which provides for decoupling of the tilt and the roll of the micromirror. The structure allows for considerable decoupling of the tilt and the roll and, or the pistoning effects observed upon micromirror actuation. The structure is suitable for application in a wavelength selective optical switch.

    Abstract: A bilayer transmission diffraction grating having antireflection lines having rectangular cross-section over grating lines having trapezoidal cross-section is described. The process-dependent grating line profile is accounted for by characterizing the grating line profile and performing electromagnetic wave diffraction simulations, whereby a grating duty cycle is selected that results in an improvement of overall diffraction efficiency and/or reducing polarization dependent loss of a diffraction grating having the characterized grating line profile. Grooves in the substrate between the grating lines further improve diffraction efficiency and reduce polarization dependent loss. The entire grating line profile, including the antireflection line, the grating line, and the groove in the substrate between the grating lines, can be defined using a single etch mask, which reduces process and equipment related manufacturing costs.

Handgrips are mounted on an the outer free ends of the first and second arm structures for pulling towards the users body, while separating the first and second arms apart, thereby replicating actual rowing strokes. During the defrost cycle, automatically controlled dampers close off the fresh air and exhaust air inputs, and exhaust output, and circulate supply air through the heat exchange core and into to the living space.

Suitable stopper layer materials are wideband gap semiconductors or dielectrics, preferably transparent at wavelengths emitted by the EL device characterized by high impact ionization rates, and/or high relative permittivity relative to adjacent layers of the emitter structure.

    Abstract: Diffractive patterns are disposed on a MEMS substrate in the gaps between the MEMS micromirrors to reduce backreflection of light leaking through the gaps and reflected by the MEMS substrate. The diffractive patterns are silicon surface-relief diffraction gratings or silicon oxide gratings on silicon substrate. Sub-wavelength gratings are used to suppress higher orders of diffraction; 50% duty cycle surface relief gratings on a substrate having index of refraction close to 3 are used to suppress both reflected and transmitted zero orders of diffraction simultaneously. The gratings have lines running parallel or at a slight angle to the gaps, to prevent the diffracted light from re-entering the gaps.

    Abstract: The invention provides a distributed back-up mechanism and a two-step method for facilitating fast control plane recovery in a switched network. In a preferred embodiment, a Label Information Database (LID) maintained at a control node of a GMPLS network is mirrored to an upstream node using the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP). After a control plane interruption resulting in the LDP restart, the control node, using the mirrored information at the upstream node, conducts first a fast coarse LID recovery wherein only the idle labels are identified, to enable the restarted LDP session to process new connection setup. A detailed LDP state information recovery performs in the background in parallel to the normal LDP operations, e.g. using on-demand LDP queries.
