  • Patent number: 7253906
Abstract: A method for the rapid measurement of polarization dependent properties of an optical device under test uses a novel technique to generate light in four different polarization states in which each state is individually sensed at a different interference frequency. The device for executing this method includes a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (M-Z) having a reference arm and a signal arm. In the signal arm, a device called a “polarization state frequency multiplexer” (PSFM) splits the light into four ports, transforms each part into one of four predetermined polarization states and then combines the light in the different polarization states together. The combined light is then passed through the device under test and combined/interfered with the light propagating through the reference arm at the output of the M-Z interferometer.

  • Patent number: 7245795
Abstract: The invention relates to an optical waveguide device for monitoring a characteristics of light, e.g. a wavelength. The device incorporates a waveguide, such as an optical fiber, with an embedded tilted Bragg grating operating in a regime of wavelength detuning. The grating is designed to disperse light azimuthally in two or more different directions about the fiber axis, said directions changing with wavelength. A photodetector array is provided for detecting the azimuthal distribution of light. A processor coupled to the photodetector array determines wavelength information from the detected azimuthal distribution of the out-coupled light.

  • Patent number: 7236660
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for all-optical wavelength add-drop switching are provided. A number of optical ports, including at least one input port and at least one output port, are each optically coupled to a respective dispersive element. When a multichannel optical signal is input through an input port, an optical beam of each channel emerges from the dispersive element at an angle depending upon its wavelength. The beams emerging from the dispersive element pass through a bulk optical element which redirects each beam toward a respective one of a number of routing or switching elements, each of which has been set to redirect the respective beam through the bulk optical element towards a selected dispersive element coupled to a selected output port.

  • Patent number: 7217937
Abstract: The present invention relates to the automatic analysis and identification of different species of particles in a liquid sample using both fluorescent tagging and magnification techniques. A light source at a first wavelength is used to induce the tagged particles to emit light at a second wavelength, while the image thereof is captured on a pixel array of a digital camera. A second camera can be used to capture an image of the particles illuminated at the first wavelength, which is separated from the second wavelength by an optical filter. Alternatively, a second light source emitting pulses of light at the second wavelength, which alternate with the first light source.

  • Patent number: 7202914
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmitter identification system, which utilizes an identification signal embedded into a digital television signal, enabling the transmitter of origin to be identified at a receiving station. Ideally the identification signal is an orthogonal pseudo-random sequence time synchronized to the signal frame structure of the digital television signal. Particularly designed for single frequency networks, identification of the various transmitted signals enables the network to be tuned to eliminate or minimize multi-path effects at certain locations, which receive transmissions from various transmitters.

  • Patent number: 7203413
Abstract: A micro-electro-mechanical (MEMs) mirror device for use in an optical switch is disclosed. A “piano”-style MEMs device includes an elongated platform pivotally mounted proximate the middle thereof by a torsional hinge. The middle portion of the platform and the torsional hinge have a combined width less than the width of the rest of the platform, whereby several of these “piano” MEMs devices can be positioned adjacent each other pivotally mounted about the same axis with only a relatively small air gap therebetween. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention electrostatic charges, which build up on exposed dielectric surfaces causing the mirror's angular position to drift over time, are minimized by positioning the hot and ground electrodes at different levels separated by a vertical surface, and placing the dielectric material on the vertical surface.

  • Patent number: 7187818
Abstract: A planar lightwave circuit device includes one or more planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) each having an optical layer deposited on a substrate, and a package base including one or more support structures for suspending the planar lightwave circuit above a portion of the package base. Each substrate has a first coefficient of thermal expansion, whereas the package base has a second coefficient of thermal expansion. The first and second coefficients of thermal expansion differ such that a change in temperature causes the support to apply one of a compressive and a tensile force to the planar lightwave circuit in a plane within or parallel to the plane of the planar lightwave circuit. The induced stress can modify the optical performance of the PLC device, e.g. to reduce the temperature sensitivity of the device and thus maintain device performance, or for providing efficient passive or dynamic tuning of the device.
