Patent number: 6289649Abstract: A protective foam cushion-making apparatus dispenses reactive foam components into an interior space between two panels of plastic film to form protective foam cushions. The apparatus includes a supply of plastic film and a film driving assembly. A foam component dispensing assembly is interposed between the film panels and injects two reactive foam components into the interior space where they are mixed together to form a mass of expandable foam. The plastic film forms a flexible mixing chamber in the area between the two pliable rollers in which the reactive foam components are mixed together after they are dispensed from the foam dispensing assembly. The foam component dispensing assembly includes two foam component dispensing tubes that are oriented at an angle to each other. One of the dispensing tubes includes a diverter assembly attached to it that provides a reaction surface that directs the flow of one foam component into the flow of the other foam component.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1998Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: Sealed Air Corporation(US)Inventor: Raymond Cherfane

Patent number: 6271275Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for producing polyurethane foam without the assistance of any through-flow mixing device for the precursor components. Air or other safe gas is mixed with a polyol-containing precursor to form a froth, and the froth is directed in a stream via a dispenser into a free space at a first predetermined rate of flow. Liquid isocyanate-containing precursor is directed in a stream via a dispenser at a second predetermined rate of flow into the free space so as to contact and mingle with the stream of froth. The mixed components then fall together into a container where they react to form polyurethane foam. Mixing of the streams is facilitated by a target upon which the two streams impinge in close proximity to each other.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1998Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Sealed Air Corp. Patent number: 6248380Abstract: A dual-film package and method for making such package is disclosed which combines the manufacturing simplicity of a package having a single, peelable lid with the consistent peelability of a package having separate permeable and impermeable lids. This is accomplished by providing a support member and a lid having a gas-permeable film and a substantially gas-impermeable film. A first heat-weld bonds the gas-permeable film to the support member and a second heat-weld bonds the gas-impermeable film to the gas-permeable film. The first and second heat-welds each have a bond-strength which is greater than the intra-film cohesive strength of the gas-permeable film so that the lid preferentially delaminates within the gas-permeable film upon peeling, thereby leaving a portion of the gas-permeable film lidded to the support member.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1996Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Cryovac, Inc.Inventors: Patrick N. Kocher, H. Walker Stockley

Patent number: 6042913Abstract: A composite film and vacuum skin package for packaging a product such as a fresh red meat is disclosed. The composite film is thermoformed and sealed under vacuum to a support member to completely enclose a product which is positioned on the support member. The composite film is a permeable film weakly bonded to an impermeable film, permitting the impermeable film to be peeled from the package while leaving the permeable film intact so that the fresh red meat product can bloom from a purplish color to a desirable red color upon exposure to oxygen. The permeable and impermeable films are fully peelable without the need for a migratable wax to enhance peelability.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Cyrovac, Inc.Inventors: Nathanael R. Patent number: 6033758Abstract: A laminate comprising two or more films, at least one of the films being a coextruded, multilayer film, wherein the laminate delaminates within the coextruded, multilayer film when the laminate is subjected to a peel force ranging from 0.001 to 2.5 pounds per inch. The laminate advantageously provides the lid for a package and delaminates into a substantially gas-impermeable portion and a gas-permeable portion, with the gas-permeable portion being bonded directly to a product support member of the package. In this manner, the gas-impermeable portion may be peelably removed from the package to allow atmospheric oxygen to enter the interior of the package.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1999Date of Patent: March 7, 2000Assignee: Cryovac, Inc.Inventors: Patrick N. Kocher, Kimberly Ann Mudar, Walter Berndt Mueller, H. Walker Stockley
