  • Patent number: 8099122
Abstract: Forward power control is improved by increasing forward power control feedback channel reliability when the mobile unit in a wireless communication system is in soft handoff. Forward power control is enhanced by decreasing the bit error rate of forward power control bits received by the base station. The bit error rate of forward power control bits is reduced by raising the power level, and thus the signal to noise ratio, of the reverse pilot channel, while maintaining the power levels of other reverse channels. The signal to noise ratio of the reverse pilot channel is raised by the base station in response to a frame error rate decrease generated by the selector component of the base station controller. The base station maintains the power level of other reverse channels by reducing the power level gain of other reverse channels relative to the reverse pilot channel.

  • Patent number: 7590095
Abstract: Techniques to control the transmit power of multiple transmissions in a wireless communication system. A transmitting source (e.g., a base station) receives from a receiving device (e.g., a remote terminal) a number of feedbacks of one or more (coded or uncoded) bit streams and possibly one or more messages. The bit stream may include one or more power control sub-channels used to send one or more metrics (e.g., power control commands, erasure indicator bits, or quality indicator bits) for one or more sets of channels. The bits allocated for each sub-channel may be aggregated to form one or more lower rate feedback sub-streams having improved reliability. The transmit power of two or more channels can be (1) independently adjusted based on the feedbacks from respective sub-channels, or (2) adjusted together based on feedback from one sub-channel, with the power difference being adjusted based on feedback received another sub-channel.

  • Patent number: 7515634
Abstract: Video encoding techniques are described that involve determining a number of processing cycles used during encoding of a video frame, and encoding the video frame without using motion estimation techniques when a number of processing cycles used during encoding exceeds a threshold. For example, the threshold may define a number of processing cycles available for encoding of the given video frame, and the determined number of processing cycles may be a counted number of cycles used during the encoding process of the given video frame. If the number of processing cycles used during encoding exceeds the threshold, motion estimation techniques can be discontinued in favor of less computationally intensive encoding techniques such as texture encoding.

  • Patent number: 7450943
Abstract: Techniques to determine whether or not a terminal is under the coverage of a current wireless communication system (e.g., a packet data system) and to switch from the current system to another wireless communication system (e.g., a voice/data system). In one method, at least one measurement of at least one parameter for at least one base station in the current system is initially obtained. The measurement(s) may be SNR measurements. A metric is derived based on the measurement(s) and used (typically along with a metric threshold and a timer) to determine whether or not the terminal is within the coverage of the current system. A switch to another system is initiated if the terminal is deemed to be outside the coverage of the current system. The two systems provide at least one common service (e.g., packet data service).

  • Patent number: 7444150
Abstract: Upon power on, a terminal performs cell selection, finds the most suitable cell to receive communication service, and camps on this cell (the serving cell). The terminal thereafter performs “C2-based” cell reselection if a better cell is found, “non-C2 based” cell reselection if the current serving cell cannot be camped on, “power scan” cell reselection if the C2-based or non-C2 based cell reselection fails, and cell selection if the power scan cell reselection fails. For the power scan cell reselection, the terminal initially performs a power scan and obtains received signal strength measurements for a list of RF channels. This list includes fewer than all RF channels evaluated by the cell selection. The terminal then acquires and decodes the N strongest RF channels, preferably in parallel, to find a suitable cell. The terminal selects a suitable cell, if found, with the highest C2 value as the new serving cell from which to receive service.

  • Patent number: 7437164
Abstract: For soft handoff on the reverse link with restrictive reuse, a wireless terminal searches for pilots transmitted by sectors in a wireless system, measures the detected pilots, selects a serving sector (e.g., the strongest received sector), and identifies non-serving sectors that may receive high interference from the terminal. The serving sector assigns the terminal with subband(s) that are usable by the serving sector and unusable by the non-serving sectors. The terminal transmits data symbols on the assigned subbands to the serving and non-serving sectors. These sectors process the reverse link transmission from the terminal and obtain soft-decision symbols, which are estimates of the transmitted data symbols. The soft-decision symbols from co-located sectors may be combined and then decoded to obtain decoded packets. The sectors may also independently decode the soft-decision symbols, and the decoded packets from these sectors may be combined to obtain final decoded packets for the terminal.

  • Patent number: 7386305
Abstract: Broadly speaking, the invention comprises systems and methods that use the number of mobile stations, denoted by N, communicating with a base station, as a variable that determines the optimum induced change rate, R, and the antenna beam width, W, of a time-varying base station antenna gain pattern used in conjunction with a forward power modulation (FPM) or a similar scheme to maximize the overall data throughput from the base station by taking advantage of multi-user diversity. In one embodiment, the FPM scheme is turned off if N is below a lower threshold. If N is above this threshold, the FPM scheme is turned on with R and W set to appropriate values. Generally, higher values of N correspond to higher values of R and lower values of W.

  • Patent number: 7366462
Abstract: Techniques to seamlessly switch reception between multimedia programs are described. For “continued decoding”, a wireless device continues to receive, decode, decompress, and (optionally) display a current program, even after a new program has been selected, until overhead information needed to decode the new program is received. After receiving the overhead information, the wireless device decodes the new program but continues to decompress the current program. The wireless device decompresses the new program after decoding this program. For “early decoding”, the wireless device receives a user input and identifies a program with potential for user selection. The identified program may be the one highlighted by the user input or a program anticipated to be selected based on the user input. The wireless device initiates decoding of the identified program, prior to its selection, so that the program can be decompressed and displayed earlier if it is subsequently selected.

  • Patent number: 7340268
Abstract: The reliability of transmit power control (TPC) commands received from a transmitter is determined based on a TPC target value. The TPC target value is derived based on a TPC threshold and possibly a weight, depending on the receiver implementation. A received TPC command is considered reliable if its absolute value exceeds the TPC target value. Received TPC commands deemed as unreliable are discarded and not used for power control. Multiple TPC target values, used for detecting UP and DOWN commands, may be derived with multiple scaling factors. For a receiver in soft handover and receiving TPC commands from multiple transmitters, a different TPC target value may be derived for each transmitter. The received TPC commands for each transmitter are compared against that transmitter's TPC target value. Received TPC commands deemed as unreliable are discarded and not combined.

  • Patent number: 7339894
Abstract: Method and apparatus for performing transmission data rate allocation in a high speed wireless communications network. A macro control loop with the network of base stations on one side and all the subscriber stations on the other side. Subscriber station selects a rate based on the amount of data queued for transmission (100). Adjusts this rate based on the available power headroom of the subscriber station (102). This adjusted transmission rate is then adjusted again to account for protection of base stations in the candidate set of the subscriber station (104). This rate is then adjusted in accordance with busy tone signals indicative of the loading conditions of active set base stations of the subscriber station (108). The base stations react to these action by refreshing measurements of their instantaneous traffic load and providing feedback in the form of soft busy tones. The algorithm is named Closed Loop Resource Allocation.
