  • Patent number: 7248572
Abstract: A mobile user terminal 402 accesses a packet data network 450 through one or more of several network access points 404–412. One or more control points 432–440 determines which network access point or points the user terminal is to access. Control may be retained in the current control point, or transferred to another control point, whenever it is convenient. There are preferably several routers, each having an associated home agent 418–420 which determines which foreign agents need to be accessed on behalf of each user terminal. There are several foreign agents 422–430, which forward packets received from a user terminal's home agent to the control point currently controlling communications with the user terminal.

  • Patent number: 7248879
Abstract: Techniques to schedule downlink data transmission to a number of terminals in a wireless communication system. In one method, one or more sets of terminals are formed for possible data transmission, with each set including a unique combination of one or more terminals and corresponding to a hypothesis to be evaluated. One or more sub-hypotheses may further be formed for each hypothesis, with each sub-hypothesis corresponding to specific assignments of a number of transmit antennas to the one or more terminals in the hypothesis. The performance of each sub-hypothesis is then evaluated, and one of the evaluated sub-hypotheses is selected based on their performance. The terminal(s) in the selected sub-hypothesis are then scheduled for data transmission, and data is thereafter coded, modulated, and transmitted to each scheduled terminal from one or more transmit antennas assigned to the terminal.

  • Patent number: 7245598
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for improving the feedback of channel information to a serving base station, which allows a reduction in the reverse link load while allowing the base station to improve the forward link data throughput. Over a channel quality indicator channel, a carrier-to-interference (C/I) symbol is transmitted over multiple slots at a reduced rate, which increases the likelihood that the base station can decode said symbol. The reduced rate mode can be selectively triggered by a high velocity condition or other unfavorable channel condition. The C/I symbol is used to determine transmission formats, power levels, and data rates of forward link transmissions.

  • Patent number: 7245597
Abstract: The structure of a time-multiplexed physical channel is used to time inter-frequency or inter-system search excursions. A mobile station that receives an instruction to perform a search excursion prepares for the search excursion by detecting the first radio frame of a message frame. Transport format combination indicator bits are extracted from the first radio frame and stored. After the search excursion is performed, the mobile station recalls the stored indicator bits and uses the indicator bits to decode other radio frames of the message frame.

  • Patent number: 7242935
Abstract: A method for minimizing search time and disruption of current service on an originating frequency during a frequency search excursion to a target frequency as part of an inter-frequency hard handoff between cells on different RF CDMA channels. Disruption of service on the current frequency during the frequency search excursion to the target frequency is minimized by increasing the amount of power allocated to other symbols of two consecutive frames impacted by the search excursion as a function of the search excursion time. The mobile station tunes to a target frequency and collects chip samples, which are stored in a memory buffer. The mobile station returns to the originating frequency to process the collected samples.

  • Patent number: 7237007
Abstract: According to a disclosed embodiment, a flow indication counter is incremented each time a data packet is transmitted from a buffer. When the number of data packets transmitted equals or exceeds a threshold number, a flow indication message comprising the buffer window size is generated and transmitted to the base station controller. Further, flow indication messages can be generated and transmitted every threshold time interval, independently of the number of data packets transmitted to ensure that flow indication messages are sent at least every preset time interval. Moreover, a system for flow control can be constructed comprising a flow indication counter module configured to provide an updated number of data packets transmitted. The system further comprises a window size monitoring module which determines the buffer window size and a message generating module which generates a flow indication message comprising the buffer window size.

  • Patent number: 7228148
Abstract: A method and apparatus that determines how much power to allocate to each of a plurality of reverse link power control (RLPC) Channels to be transmitted from a base station, based upon data rate control (DRC) messages transmitted to the base station. Historical information is used to determine the quality of the Forward Link over which the RLPC is to be transmitted. If the history of the DRCs received indicates that the remote station to which the RLPC Channel is to be directed has not transmitted a DRC recently, then the base station allocates power to the RLPC Channels based upon information provided to the base station in DRCs that were received by the base station, but that were directed to other base stations. Accordingly, the base station can allocate power among the RLPC Channels without having received explicit information as to the quality of the Forward Link between the base station and every remote station intended to receive the information on the RLPC Channels.

  • Patent number: 7224719
Abstract: In a remote unit of a wireless communication system, the speed of acquisition, or reacquisition, of a pilot signal by a search engine is increased. PN space is divided into segments and a coarse search of each segment is performed using a set of “fast” search parameters. A set of peak signal strengths along with their corresponding PN offsets, is saved for each segment of PN space. Following the search of all segments of PN space, the peak signal strengths which were saved during the coarse acquisition are evaluated. Coarse acquisition search results are used by the remote unit to determine fine search window parameters for subsequent searches performed by the remote unit search engine. The fine search parameters concentrate searching efforts on portions of PN space most likely to contain a viable base station pilot signal.

  • Patent number: 7221680
Abstract: Techniques for multiplexing and transmitting multiple data streams are described. Transmission of the multiple data streams occurs in “super-frames”. Each super-frame has a predetermined time duration and is further divided into multiple (e.g., four) frames. Each data block for each data stream is outer encoded to generate a corresponding code block. Each code block is partitioned into multiple subblocks, and each data packet in each code block is inner encoded and modulated to generate modulation symbols for the packet. The multiple subblocks for each code block are transmitted in the multiple frames of the same super-frame, one subblock per frame. Each data stream is allocated a number of transmission units in each super-frame and is assigned specific transmission units to achieve efficient packing. A wireless device can select and receive individual data streams.

  • Patent number: 7218689
Abstract: An apparatus and method for recovering data transmitted in a wireless communication system is claimed. A plurality of signal points, the signal point including a plurality of modulation symbols from a plurality of coded bits, is received. A first subset of signal points for which a bit is equal to a first value and a second subset of signal points for which the bit is equal to a second value is determined. The first and second subsets are signal points from an expanded signal constellation. The probability that the bit is equal to the first value or the second value is determined as a function of the received signal point. A soft decision symbol may then be determined, based on the probability that the bit is equal to the first value or the second value. The soft decision symbols may be represented as log likelihood ratios.
