Abstract: Novel heat-curable compositions are obtained by combining a bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dicyclopentadiene-containing polyester and an unsaturated polyester. These compositions can be cross-linked by heating at temperatures above 135.degree. C., and do not require cross-linking agents or radical initiators. The compositions of the present invention are useful as coatings and adhesives having superior qualities.

Abstract: The invention discloses a method of treating swine dysentery by the administration of an animal feed composition containing an effective amount of an alkoxysilane compound such as 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyloctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride.
Abstract: A process for purifying diethoxymethane from a mixture containing ethanol and, optionally, water. The process involves the addition of an amount of water, DEM, or an appropriate mixture of any two or three of water, DEM and ethanol that is effective in moving the mixture into the two liquid phase region on an equilibrium tie-line which crosses the critical distillation boundary without the need for additional azeotrope-forming agents such as cyclohexane.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2,4-disubstituted-1,5-pentanediols from formaldehyde and at least one simple aldehyde of the formula RCH.sub.2 CHO. More particularly the invention relates to a reaction to produce a 2,4-disubstituted glutaraldehyde wherein the reactant mole ratio of aldehyde/formaldehyde is between 1 and 8. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a secondary amine or secondary amine salt catalyst and leads to higher yields of the 2,4-disubstituted glutaraldehyde. The invention also relates to the production of 2,4-disubstituted-1,5-pentanediols by hydrogenation of the 2,4-disubstituted glutaraldehydes.
Abstract: A waste-treatment process for water-based printing operations which employ inks comprising aqueous dispersions of polyester or polyesteramide materials containing water solubilizing sulfo-salt groups, comprising providing in an agitated vessel a substantially homogenous system of water and multi-valent cation, adding the waste aqueous dispersion of polyester or polyesteramide material from the printing operation to the vessel, allowing ion interchange and insolubilization of the material in the water to occur, and physically separating the water from the insolubilized material.

Abstract: Rapid cut-off apparatus for high speed moving yarn whereupon any excessive force exerted upon the yarn causes the apparatus to be triggered into a yarn cut-off operation with the apparatus being accelerated to the speed of the moving yarn upon frictional engagement of the cut-off blade of the apparatus with the yarn.
Abstract: The preparation of 4,4'-dimethylstilbenedicarboxylate by acetylating 4,4'-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzoin to give 4,4'-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzoin acetate, selectively reducing 4,4'-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzoin acetate with hydrogen to give 1,2-bis(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)ethanol, and subjecting the 1,2-bis(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)ethanol to either (1) dehydration or (2) acetylation to 1,2-bis(4-carbomethoxyphenyl)-1-acetoxy ethane followed by pyrolysis thereof to give the 4,4'-dimethylstilbenedicarboxylate. In this process, the new compounds 4,4'-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzoin acetate, 1,2-bis(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)ethanol, and 1,2-bis(4-carbomethoxyphenyl)-1-acetoxy ethane are produced and the novel preparations thereof are performed.
Abstract: Composite materials useful as hard tissue prosthetics comprising synthetic biodegradable polymers and unsintered calcium phosphate biomaterials optionally porositized by pore-forming agents are described. The composite materials may be ground and blended with a compatible water soluble pore-forming agent and then molded to form dense, shaped objects which may be made porous by leaching out said water soluble pore-forming agent. The composites may be used as hard tissue prosthetics either alone or in conjunction with conventional prostheses.

C. in the presence of an organic solvent of the requisite epoxybutane or epoxypentane with a proton source and a nucleophile. The proton source can be a free strong acid such as a sulfonic, sulfamic acid, or hydrohalide acid, or the proton source can be derived from an equilibrium system comprising a free strong acid and weak base in equilibrium with the respective deprotonated strong acid and protonated weak base. The process is carried out in one step with reduction or avoidance of aldehyde formation by rearrangement of the epoxyalkane.
