  • Patent number: 7238475
Abstract: Methods and materials for studying the effects of a newly identified human gene, APOAV, and the corresponding mouse gene apoAV. The sequences of the genes are given, and transgenic animals which either contain the gene or have the endogenous gene knocked out are described. In addition, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene are described and characterized. It is demonstrated that certain SNPs are associated with diseases involving lipids and triglycerides and other metabolic diseases. These SNPs may be used alone or with SNPs from other genes to study individual risk factors. Methods for intervention in lipid diseases, including the screening of drugs to treat lipid-related or diabetic diseases are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7239471
Abstract: An integrated circuit in a hard disk drive contains a resistance measurement circuit for a magnetoresistive head. The relationship between the amount of a resistance change in the magnetoresistive head and the amount of a temperature rise, the relationship between the amount of a temperature rise and the average amount of magnetoresistive head protrusion, and a permissible temperature rise value for magnetoresistive head life optimization are entered in a PC. The amount of a resistance change is calculated from a magnetoresistive head's initial resistance value and a resistance value prevailing after power application to a heater. The amount of a temperature rise is determined from the amount of a resistance change. The amount of protrusion is determined from the amount of a temperature rise. If a required protrusion amount is not reached by the amount of protrusion, the amount of power application is increased.

  • Patent number: 7238668
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for inhibiting the adhesion of one cell to another comprising interfering with the interaction between the extracellular matrix receptor and its ligand. The invention is based upon the discovery that the ?4?1 extracellular matrix receptor promotes adhesion of lymphocytes to endothelial cells via attachment to a defined peptide sequence. Prior to the present invention, the ligand of the ?4?1 receptor had not been identified, nor had the function of the ?4?1 receptor in lymphocyte attachment been known. By preventing the interaction between the ?4?1 receptor and its ligands using antibodies or defined peptide sequences, the present invention enables, for the first time, specific intervention in the migration of lymphocytes through the vascular endothelium and into tissues.

  • Patent number: 7237076
Abstract: Snapshots are implemented by combining original data in a place where an operational volume has been updated with data in a place where the operational volume has not been updated. A snapshot management table maintains a value indicating that update has not been conducted, or a storage place of original data, for each of combinations of blocks in the operational volume and the snapshots. If there is a snapshot in which update has not been conducted in a update place at the time of update, then original data is copied and the snapshot management table is updated. The copied original data is managed by a difference block management table, which has a value indicating whether respective snapshots are referencing the data. If a snapshot is deleted, then the value indicating that the snapshot is referencing is altered in all entries in the difference block management table.

Abstract: The computer system comprises a first and second computer, at least one first storage system connected to the first computer, and a plurality of second storage systems connected to the second computer as well as being connected to the at least one first storage system. The first computer issues to the first storage system a normal write request and control-use write request stamped with issue time. A control-use write request is issued at periodic intervals. The first storage system receives a write request and transmits the write request as update-data to second storage system in such a way that the issue order is ascertainable. The second storage system receives the update-data and, responsive to a reflect instruction from the second computer, reflects the update-data in storage areas.

  • Patent number: 7236633
Abstract: The present invention provides techniques for compressing and decompressing data in a programmable circuit. Programmable circuits can be configured according to user design by configuration data. Configuration data is compressed using a compression algorithm to save memory space. When the configuration data is needed, the compressed configuration data is decompressed using a decompressor. A decompressor can decompress configuration data using a variety of decompression algorithms such as arithmetic decoding. In an arithmetic encoding algorithm, symbol probabilities are used to increase compression of the data. The symbol probabilities can be transferred in a header of the encoded data stream and subsequently stored in a symbol probability table. The input of the decompressor may be coupled to a FIFO that temporarily stores the encoded data until it can be used by the decompressor.
