Patent number: 7840392Abstract: Output feedback pole placement problems with parameter drift are solved with stabilizing solutions. Changes in system parameters trigger alerts in an automated manner. A representative method includes determining a set of solutions for an output feed pole placement problem, based on parameters of a physical system. The solutions are stable and well-conditioned for monitoring changes to the parameters of the physical system. The physical system is adjusted, or controlled, based on the solutions determined. Updated parameters of the physical system are acquired. A set of updated solutions for the output feedback pole placement problem are determined based on the updated parameters. The physical system is then adjusted, or controlled, based on the updated solutions determined. A system manager may also be notified of the updated parameters and/or the updated solutions. Furthermore, changes within the system may be monitored, and/or potentially critical changes within the system may be detected.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2008Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Mei Kobayashi, Kaiyang Yang

Patent number: 7825486Abstract: A programmable magnetoresistive memory cell. The memory cell has a magnetic element that includes a first and a second ferromagnetic layer. The first and second ferromagnetic layers are separated by a non-ferromagnetic and preferably electrically insulating spacer layer. The data bit is read out by measuring the electrical resistance across the magnetic element. The memory cell further includes: a third ferromagnetic layer having a well-defined magnetization direction and a resistance switching material having a carrier density. The carrier density can be altered by causing an ion concentration to become altered by means of an applied electrical voltage signal. Thus, the carrier density can be switched between a first and second state.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2009Date of Patent: November 2, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Siegfried Friedrich Karg, Gerhard Ingmar Meijer

Patent number: 7747426Abstract: A system, such as hardware or software system having a number of modules, is simulated using multi-tasking computer code. Simulation computer code launches tasks simulating system execution, where each task corresponds to a module. Each task requests a processing delay to a common scheduler. Upon the common scheduler receiving a processing delay request, the common scheduler instructs a scheduling method processor to update a task-remaining time for at least one task. The scheduling method processor updates the task-remaining time for at least one task based at least on a scheduling approach. The common scheduler sends a wait request to a preexisting simulation system to delay a module that corresponds to the task by a length of time, based on the task-remaining time for the task and the scheduling approach. The preexisting simulation system delays the module that corresponds to the task by the length of time of the wait request.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 2005Date of Patent: June 29, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Hiroaki Nakamura, Naoto Sato, Naoshi Tabuchi, Hiroshi Ishikawa

Patent number: 7730001Abstract: A method is provided for characterizing objects generated during an initial run of a program, each object being characterized by a number of alternative properties which can be chosen. The method includes steps of instrumenting an initial run of program to determine characterization information about each of objects, then determining a desirable property for each object, then determining a correlation between the desirable property and the characterization information for each of the objects. This correlation is then used to select a property for an object that is subsequently created during a run of the program based only upon characterization information about the subsequently created object.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2002Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas N. Patent number: 7720105Abstract: For switching or transmitting data packets, one can provide communication systems which consist of several modules —operating in parallel on segments of a packet —to increase speed and handling capacity. One module acts as master, others are slave modules controlled by control signals derived by the master module. It is important to correctly synchronize in each module the data segment and the respective control signal of each packet, because in large systems the data paths carrying packet segments and the control signal paths may have substantially different delays. The invention provides for measurement of the propagation delay differences and for introducing a controlled delay in each slave module, so that data segments and control signals can be correctly correlated by delaying either the one or the other. Synchronization packets are transmitted besides normal data packets, for obtaining time stamps which are used to determine the delay difference.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2003Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael Colmant, Alan Benner, Francois G. Patent number: 7711986Abstract: A primary server transmits a write transaction to N backup devices. Each backup device records the write transaction to a local redo log stored at a high-performance storage and then transmits a notification to the primary device. When the primary device receives notifications from M of the N backup devices, it commits the write transaction, recording it to a low-performance storage. Once the write transaction has been recorded to the low-performance storage, the primary device requests that the backup devices delete their logs. If the primary device incurs a fault, one of the backup devices becomes the new primary device and determines which backup device has the newest local redo log. The backup device having the newest log sends it to the other backup devices, which update their local redo logs to the same state as the newest log. Thereafter, the new primary device is ready to resume transaction processing.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2008Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yohsuke Ozawa, Ryoh Neyama, Hisashi Miyashita, Mikio Takeuchi, Gaku Yamamoto

Patent number: 7702410Abstract: A schedule is generated by which physical items to be manufactured are assigned into production slots. The physical items have constraints governing manufacture of the physical items. The method generates coefficient matrix clusters from a mathematical programming problem based on an actual scheduling problem. Each coefficient matrix cluster defines a variable cluster-constraint cluster pair. A variable cluster of each coefficient matrix cluster defines production slot-physical item pairs. A constraint cluster of each coefficient matrix cluster defines a group of constraints. Each coefficient matrix cluster includes coefficient-binary variable pairs, each pair having a binary variable multiplied by a coefficient. For each coefficient matrix cluster, the method reduces non-zero factors within the cluster. Each non-zero factor within the coefficient matrix cluster is defined as a coefficient-binary variable pair such that the binary variable of the pair multiplied by the coefficient of the pair is non-zero.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2007Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Takayuki Yoshizumi
