Abstract: A hydraulic roll protection system in which positioning of an adjustable roll relative to a fixed roll is caused by adjusting screws acting on movable journal boxes through a pressurized piston cylinder device. A relief valve between a hand pump and the cylinder acts to relieve excessive pressures. A switch valve connects the hand pump alternately to advance the roll journal to normal gap positions and to retract the roll from the fixed roll.

Abstract: An extruder including a devolatilizing section having helical channels formed in the barrel and having a cylindrical rotor closing the inner sides of the channels. Material is fed onto the rotor surface which rotates and forms the material into one or more rolling banks engaging only the upstream flank of the channels and the rotor surface. Helical vent slots pass through the barrel into each channel at the downstream flanks not occupied by the rolling bank.
Abstract: Mixtures of particulate material of widely different particulate sizes segregate on storage, smaller particles falling to the bottom. In the invention mixture is supplied to a bunker in a plurality of layers and subsequently withdrawn so that mixture is taken from each layer simultaneously. Apparatus used comprises a rotor dividing the bunker into several equal compartments. During introduction of a batch of mixture to the bunker the rotor is rotated through several revolutions so that the mixture forms layers in each compartment. The bottom of the bunker is flat. An outlet slot in the bottom extends along a chord. A crew conveyor below the slot carries mixture falling through the slot away from the bunker. The rotor rotates slowly during dispensing in synchronism with the conveyor, pushing mixture to the slot at such a rate that material from every layer in a compartment falls into the slot simultaneously, the compartments being progressively emptied.
Abstract: A profile for use in the manufacture of frames for windows and the like comprises a core (1) of generally rectangular cross section of laminated plywood or cement-bonded fibrous material with a cladding (3) of plastics material, for example polyvinylchloride or polycarbonate, extruded therearound. The extruded cladding (3) provides, extending along the length of the profile, a glass (or other) panel retaining member (9) which is inclined inwardly (preferably at 45.degree. or substantially so) over a surface of the profile, and an undercut rib 11 spaced from the member (9). In manufacturing frames from the profile the latter is cut into appropriate lengths by saw cuts (31-39) extending at 45.degree.
Abstract: Temperature control means for a deflectable shell roll having lengthwise passages and being mounted for rotation on a fixed beam received in the inner race of a triple race bearing. The middle race of the bearing rotates with the shell roll and provides conduits between the roll shell passages and a central axial bore communicating with a rotary joint providing an inlet and an outlet for circulation of temperature control fluid through the shell passages.

Abstract: This invention is concerned with cored extruded plastics profiles, suitable for use in the manufacture of frames for windows and the like, comprising a core of shape-retaining material and a cladding of plastics material extruded therearound. The invention is also concerned with methods of manufacturing frames for windows or the like from such profiles, including methods of forming the corner joints of said frames, and with glazing clips particularly suitable for use in assembling glass or other panels in said frames.
Abstract: An extrusion press having a die slide assembly capable of shearing the extrusion in the die, and transporting the die to a side movable transfer table for change thereof, the assembly eliminating excessive projection beyond the confines of the extrusion press of die transport equipment. The die slide assembly includes a first hydraulic cylinder for shearing an extrusion from the die, and a second hydraulic cylinder mounted adjacent the first cylinder for transporting the die and die holder to a transfer station on the side of said platen, permitting an exchange of the die holder die therewith, when necessary. The second hydraulic cylinder is movable with the die slide assembly to minimize the length requirements of the second hydraulic unit and still effectuate full traverse of the die holder.
Abstract: A mechanism for successively presenting new edges of a tool for application against a rotating member being machined. The tool has an annular edge which is forced against a rotating member, by emplacement in the distal end of a movable arm. The arm has a ratchet mechanism into which the tool is secured. The ratchet mechanism rotates the tool on the end of the arm to advance a new edge thereof, against the member being machined. The ratchet is activated by an indexing piston which causes the ratchet and tool associated therewith, to rotate with respect to the member being machined, to present a proper edge thereagainst, minimizing machine down-time for tool adjustment and repair.
Abstract: A gage for locating the center of circular workpieces including a primary probe engageable with the periphery of a workpiece along a radial plane, a secondary probe spaced from the primary probe and swingable about a pivot axis coaxial with the engagement point of the primary probe, and a gage surface assuming a particular angular relation to the plane depending on the extent of the swinging movement of the secondary probe, the angular disposition of the gage surface being indicative of the distance between the periphery and the center of the workpiece.
Abstract: An arrangement for loading an injection unit of an injection molding machine by a stuffer apparatus wherein a uniform measure of plastic-like material is consecutively fed to the machine. The arrangement comprises a plurality of container units which are movable from a receiving position under a hopper to a discharge position over the injection unit of the injection molding machine wherein the material is rammed therein. As one of the container units is being emptied into the machine, another container unit may be filled, reducing time between successive loadings and unloadings thereof.
Abstract: A roller head securable to the discharge end of an extrusion machine, wherein the roller head has a pair of rollers each rotatable between a pair of arms pivotable about an axis transverse to the extrusion machine. Each roller is movable with respect to the other roller and to the axis of the extrusion machine by a pair of pressurizable cylinders arranged between the pivotable arms. The rollers are rotatable, even in their separated state, by an articulated drive system which permits roller rotation during machine output and during roller support arm movement. The rollers are permitted to "float" on a hydraulic suspension system utilizing an accumulator wherein the separation of the rollers is dependent upon the volume of extrudite being forced therethrough.

Abstract: An arrangement for bending of a roll in a calender roll machine, to produce a crown in the roll, while minimizing any increased or decreased load on the bearing thereduring. The roll bending arrangement includes a sleeve assembly on each end thereof, which are each given a couple. The roll bending apparatus producing each couple is secured to the foundation or the frame of the machine so as to minimize any additional load on the roll bearings which carry the nip pressure.
Abstract: A non-contact seal for the ends of a variable crown calender roll shaft subject to variations in shaft alignment. The seal is a labyrinthian type with a suction system adapted to a sump to recycle the oil. The oil level is maintained and contact between the rotating shaft and the labyrinthian seal is avoided, permitting higher temperature and higher speed use of the roll apparatus.
Abstract: A carriage drive system for a metal working machine wherein the carriage supports the metal working tool. The carriage drive comprises a worm gear rotatably engaged with a rack arrangement, driven by a motor and gear box on the carriage. The rack arrangement comprises a pair of rack sections opposed to one another along the sides of the worm gear. The carriage drive is pivotably supported on the carriage by a pivot pin which permits slight rocking and self centering motion in the carriage drive as it propels the carriage on its ways.
