  • Patent number: 8198837
Abstract: A DC motor control device calculates motor speed using determinations of motor field flux and armature voltage in the motor. The device includes a control module having one or more control inputs and one or more control outputs. At least one control input is configured to receive data representing field current measured in the DC motor. The control module includes flux curve logic that is responsive to measurements of motor field current to calculate a field flux in the motor. The flux curve logic uses a flux curve stored in the control module, the flux curve representing a functional relationship between field current and field flux in the motor. The flux curve is defined by a plurality of flux curve data points corresponding to a plurality of motor field currents within a lower current range and within an upper current range. The flux curve is further defined by at least a first flux curve line positioned within the lower current range and a second flux curve line positioned within the upper current range.

  • Patent number: 8198824
Abstract: A high-pressure discharge lamp ballast is provided for igniting and re-igniting a high-pressure discharge lamp in various states of operation. A power supply circuit is coupled to a power source and supplies AC power to the lamp. An ignition voltage generating circuit supplies a high-voltage ignition pulse for igniting the lamp. A pulse control circuit alternatively controls the ignition voltage generating circuit in a first control mode to provide the high-voltage ignition pulses for a first time period and in a second control mode to delay the high-voltage ignition pulses for a second time period. An abnormality detection circuit detects an abnormal lighting state of the lamp wherein a measured condition of the lamp corresponds to a predetermined condition. The pulse control circuit increases a ratio of the second time period relative to the first time period upon detection of an abnormal lighting state of the lamp by the abnormality detection circuit.

  • Patent number: 8186312
Abstract: A control system is provided for a modulated heating system including at least one modulating water heater and a controller. A deadband control scheme provides for reduced cycling of the modulating heater when total system heat demand falls between the maximum output of one heater and the sum of the maximum output of that one point and the minimum firing point of the next subsequent heater. Condensation of flue gas products is prevented by monitoring flue exhaust temperature for each heater and controlling the modulation of each heater to maintain a minimum heater output sufficiently high to prevent condensation of flue gas products from that heater. Rapid reaction to changes in system heat demand is provided by sensing changes in flow rate in a primary loop of the system and anticipating resulting changes in temperature thus allowing for change in heater output prior to the time the change in flow rate has fully impacted system temperature.

  • Patent number: 8186763
Abstract: The invention relates to a road-milling machine which has a ladder 11 to allow the driver's position 7 of the civil engineering machine to be climbed to easily. The ladder is mounted on one 1B of the two longitudinal sides of the frame 1 of the machine to be pivotable about an axis of pivot 27 extending substantially at right angles to the direction of travel. The ladder can thus be folded upwards to widen the working range of the machine. However, should the ladder not be in a state where it is folded upwards while the machine is being used to do work, the ladder cannot be damaged against obstacles which suddenly make an appearance in the working range. Should the ladder hit against an obstacle, the ladder is able to move out of the way of the obstacle by pivoting out of the vertical position in the opposite direction to the direction of travel.

  • Patent number: 8186313
Abstract: A method of controlling a modulating water heater supplying water to a system includes sensing a parameter which changes corresponding to a change in system flow rate, the sensed parameter being a parameter other than system temperature, and then modulating output of the heater in response to a change in the sensed parameter. Early detection of system flow rate changes permits early modulation of water heater output before the changes in flow rate have had time to significantly impact the system temperature.
