Patent number: 4908574Abstract: A sensor for sensing and quantifying the conformity of a workpiece surface contour to a predetermined design contour. The sensor consists of an array of capacitor elements on a surface having the negative image of the predetermined design contour, against which the workpiece is mated. In operation, each of the capacitor elements and the workpiece are connected to a corresponding oscillator circuit so that the frequency of each circuit is a function of the capacitance between the individual plate element and the workpiece, while the capacitance is a function of the distance between the individual plate element and the workpiece. Hence the overall output of the circuits is a function of the conformity of the workpiece surface contour to the contour or topology of the sensor surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1988Date of Patent: March 13, 1990Assignee: Extrude Hone CorporationInventors: Lawrence J. Rhoades, Donald Risko, Ralph L. Resnick

Patent number: 4908391Abstract: Enhanced hiding power for opacifiers in paints, inks, and other coatings is provided by employing the opacifiers, such as TiO.sub.2, ZnO, talc, CaCo.sub.3, and the like, adhered to or embedded in the surface of thermoplastic microspheres. The composite opacifier-microsphere material is readily formed with a preselected specific gravity, so that there is little tendency for the material to separate. In addition, the composite behaves in the coating as a opacifier-air interface, having a very high difference in refractive indices, and exceptional hiding power. The high volume to weight ratio of the composite affords very attractive economic advantages, effectively reducing the weight proportion of opacifiers required in the formulations, and other related advantages.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1988Date of Patent: March 13, 1990Assignee: Pierce & StevensInventors: George E. Patent number: 4902424Abstract: Mono-layer thin film membranes are provided which are ultraporous. Such mono-layers are formed having a thickness on the order of about 1.2 to 150 nanometers, by a variety of polymerization, cross-linking, and film treatment processes to achieve the development of controlled pore sizes in the ultraporous size range corresponding to a molecular weight cutoff values of from about 500 to about 1,000,000. Such thin film mono-layer membranes are ordinarily supported on a microporous support material, desirably a microporous polymer membrane having a smooth, microporous skin with pore sizes in the range of from about 0.1 microns to about 3 microns, preferably from about 0.1 microns to about 0.5 microns, in diameter. There may be an intermediate gel layer. These membranes are useful for ultrafiltration, dialysis, and molecular separations.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1988Date of Patent: February 20, 1990Assignee: Memetc North America Corp.Inventor: Wolfgang J. Patent number: 4871519Abstract: A process for producing magnesium oxide and/or hydrates thereof from predominantly magnesium or magnesium-calcium raw materials, and optionally producing calcium carbonate, whereby the raw material is roasted if necessary to form a mixture of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide. The calcium oxide is then dissolved from the mixture using an aqueous solution containing an organic amine and a salt of an organic amine with an acid capable of forming a soluble calcium salt with said organic amine. Separating the solution from the undissolved magnesium oxide and treating the solution with carbon dioxide will cause the dissolved calcium to be precipitated and calcium carbide.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1988Date of Patent: October 3, 1989Assignee: Vyskumny ustav pre petrochemiu PrievidzaInventors: Miroslav Zikmund, Cestmir Hybl, Vendelin Macho, Valer Adam

Patent number: 4843104Abstract: Microsphere wet cake is mixed with a processing aid efective to prevent agglomeration and surface bonding of the microspheres, and thereafter removing water by drying with continuous mixing, optionally also under reduced pressure, i.e. vacuum drying. By the control of the application of heat and balancing temperature and the mixing, and optionally also the reduced pressure, it is possible to also control expansion of the microspheres from substantially none to substantially theoretical limits of expansion. The processing aid in the present invention is any one of a wide diversity of materials which meet the requirements of the intended function, i.e., to prevent the agglomeration of the microspheres during the process. Suitable materials include, by way of example, dry inorganic pigments or filler materials, and the like, and related organic materials.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1987Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Assignee: Pierce & StevensInventors: George E.
