  • Patent number: 4706929
Abstract: A gas cylinder valve with an inner valve stem biased toward a valve open position by a helical compression spring is pneumatically operated by an actuator having a piston biased by a stack of disc springs against an outer valve stem, separated from the inner valve stem by a diaphragm gas seal, to urge the inner valve stem to a valve closed position. While the force exerted on the inner valve stem by the disc springs exceeds that applied by the helical spring so that the valve is normally biased closed, pneumatic pressure applied to the piston moves the piston away from the outer valve member so that the helical spring moves the inner valve stem to the open position.

  • Patent number: 4704904
Abstract: A high temperature gas meter provides a liquid injection means, at least one temperature sensing means located upstream from the liquid injection means and a liquid flow measuring means. Alternatively, a second temperature sensing means may be employed downstream from the liquid injection means. The meter uses the change in temperature of a gas flowing through a conduit recorded at temperature sensing means before and after injection into the gas stream of a liquid of known quantity and temperature. The flow of the gas is inversely proportional to the change in temperature recorded prior to liquid injection and after liquid injection.

  • Patent number: 4696077
Abstract: A handle assembly for a luggage case having a hand-grip member made of a heavy cord of twisted material formed into two rows longitudinally and closely spaced together with an outer piece of fabric material folded around and sewn along the central longitudinal line to provide a substantially central portion of said element. A piece of leather may be folded over said heavy cord of material underlying the fabric material and sewn along the central longitudinal line. In addition, a length of strap may be arranged along the length of the hand-grip member to add rigidity thereto. A piece of leather is brought through a loop and fixedly attached to the ends of the hand-grip member, and a fabric piece of material is brought through the other side of the loop to form an anchoring portion for attachment to the luggage case.

  • Patent number: 4692362
Abstract: The two halves of a split annular inflatable brake are formed by laying up a number of flat rubber body plies and interleaved end patches which extend longitudinally beyond the ends of the body plies. The sides of the body plies, some of which are fabric reinforced, are successively folded over each other and stitched to form a multi-layered flattened tubular body. The end patches are folded in turn over the ends of the flattened tubular body, and in the case of fabric reinforced patches, are pinched and trimmed along the side edges of the flattened tubular body. Unreinforced end patches are cut inward from the sides to form a center flap which is folded down against the sides of the flattened tubular body and side flaps, one of which is removed, and the other of which is pulled circumferentially around the tubular body over the folded center flap. The split air brake is built up on an arcuate mold half and then the remaining mold parts are assembled around the built up part for curing.

  • Patent number: 4664354
Abstract: Bosses project from the outer surface of the ingot mold and are arranged in a planar zone, each of the bosses contains a channel that has slidably positioned therein an anchor which is projected beyond the outer surface of each boss into each boss. The projecting portions of the anchors are attached to a continuous reinforcement band extending between the projecting portions of the anchors. The continuous reinforcement band is spaced from the ingot mold. Stresses and strains caused by teeming (pouring) hot molten metal into the ingot mold are absorbed by the continuous reinforcement band.

  • Patent number: 4662790
Abstract: An arrestor for reducing the velocity of moving icebergs and the like or large drifting objects relative to an off-shore fixed structure is disclosed. In use, the device extends outwardly from a fixed structure in at least one direction. A frame is adapted to be mounted to the structure in a manner which will allow an extending end thereof to move toward the structure. Nylon ropes or any other suitable elastic members are attached to the frame and to the structure and are utilized to provide an increasingly greater resistive force on the frame as the extending end of the frame is pushed toward the structure by an iceberg. Various embodiments of the general concept are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4634841
Abstract: A ceramic cover for a cooking stove element is in the form of a flat plate with a depending skirt which closely surrounds the heating element. A suitable composition includes about 40% clay, 25% talc, 35% lignite and small amounts of lignite residue and dextrin.

  • Patent number: 4609527
Abstract: The specification discloses a powder process in which metal or ceramic particles are mixed with a binder such as ultra high molecular weight polyethylene powder and are compacted. The compacted shape is heated to a temperature near the melting point of the binder to consolidate the binder and produce a green shape. The green shape is formed and the binder is removed. Thereafter, the shape is sintered to form a final part.

  • Patent number: 4609306
Abstract: An ice-breaking structure having a platform member adapted to be flexibly connected to an off-shore fixed well shaft in a manner which allows the platform to lift and/or tilt relative to the shaft is disclosed. The platform member has at least one lower surface which slopes upwardly toward an outer edge thereof and is adapted to be positioned on the shaft so that the sloping surface extends both above and below sea level. As oncoming ice approaches and contacts the structure, the sloping surface lifts a portion of the platform upwardly onto the ice so that part of the weight of the platform is carried by the ice. This weight on the ice aids in breaking-up the same. Various embodiments of the general concept are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4587823
Abstract: The apparatus and method make possible the semicontinuous rolling of an extensive range of product widths from no more than three widths of slabs. The leading end of a slab is forged or upset laterally between dies tapered to reduce its width at said end gradually to a value less than the desired width at the end of the pass. The slab is then passed through grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce its width and into the rolls of a roughing stand. The edge rolling tends to move the overfilled metal into the void created by the dies. As the trailing end of the slab approaches the roughing stand the edging rolls are backed off, allowing that end of the slab to fan out laterally. As the slab leaves the roughing stand it is rolled between grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce spread and bring the fanned-out trailing end to size. That operation causes the trailing end to bulge rearwardly at its center, so compensating for fishtailing.
