  • Patent number: 5099206
Abstract: There is disclosed high-resolution NMR spectroscopy in solids. Magic angle spinning and cross polarization are used in conjunction. The sample is rotated by a spinner at a high speed about an axis oriented at the magic angle 54.degree.44' with respect to the static magnetic field. Under this condition, a 90.degree. pulse is applied to abundant nuclear species, such as .sup.1 H that is coupled to dilute nuclear species, such as .sup.13 C. Then, a spin-locking pulse or pulse sequence is applied to the abundant nuclear species. An observing pulse or pulse sequence is applied to the dilute nuclear species. The free induction decay signal from the dilute nuclear species is detected. The spin-locking pulse or the observing pulse is amplitude-modulated at a low frequency.

  • Patent number: 5095698
Abstract: A hydrostatic transmission in a closed circuit which includes a hydraulic engine having a stroke-volume control device and a hydraulic pump connected to said hydraulic engine by two pressure lines. The stroke volume of the pump and/or the engine is regulated by the stroke-volume control device. The closed circuit includes a reversing valve which is connected to both pressure lines and is controlled by the prevailing pressures in the pressure lines. The reversing valve connects the pressure line carrying the lower pressure to a delivery valve and connects the pressure line carrying the higher pressure to a pressure-reducing valve so that the level of the control pressure in the stroke-volume control device is determined. A pressure-reducing valve is located in each pressure line and the pressure-reducing valves and the reversing valve are combined as a single combination valve.

  • Patent number: 5097134
Abstract: A scanning electron microscope permitting observation of raw biological specimens containing moisture. A vessel accommodating water supplied to the specimen is formed. A passage is formed in the specimen chamber of the microscope to convey the liquid from the vessel to the specimen. A pipe for introducing a gas such as air is connected with the passage. The introduced gas leaks around the specimen after flowing through the passage to prevent the liquid from freezing in the vessel and in the passage when the specimen chamber is evacuated to a vacuum.

  • Patent number: 5088565
Abstract: A vibratory pile driver having means for clamping onto a pile or similar structure to be driven or extracted substantially linearly, e.g. vertically, includes a hydraulic gear motor having two oppositely rotatable shafts and a pair of semicircular weights aligned in the same vertical plane. Each weight is rotatably secured to a shaft parallel to the motor shafts. Means, in the form of drive and driven pulleys, sprockets or the like connected by toothed timing belts, chains or the like, respectively, are provided for driving the weights from the motor shafts. Since the gears of the hydraulic gear motor operate in synchronization, the weights are driven synchronously to provide substantially linear, e.g. vertical, forces. Such an arrangement combines the synchronizing gears and the power source and makes it possible to eliminate relatively large gears, to use larger diameter weights and to achieve, under certain designs, a smaller overall machine width adjacent the pile to be driven.

  • Patent number: 5088117
Abstract: The hospital gown has a top made of four pieces - two pieces for the right side (front and rear) and two pieces for the left side (front and rear). The two pieces are identical for the left side and the other two pieces are identical for the right side. The top of the gown has upward flaring body lines on each side of the neck cut-out, as in a butterfly wing. The sleeves are actually openings in the outer upper edges which extend about two-thirds the way down to the bottom of the top. The shoulders of a patient extend outwardly of the neck cut-out about one-fourth to one-third of the way to the outer edges such that the outer portions drop to form modesty sleeves which have no bottoms but open inwardly of the top to allow IV solution containers to pass therethrough without disconnecting the sterile connection to the patient. The bottom is a wrap-around panel.

  • Patent number: 5087362
Abstract: A flume distribution system includes a distributor having a stationary lower portion and a removable upper portion. The lower portion defines a duct which is in fluid communication with a flume and at least one underdrain lateral. The lower portion also includes an apertured end wall which abuts one of the underdrain laterals at a lateral inlet, and a stop is disposed within the duct and spaced from the end wall. The duct receives a removable orifice plate which is adapted to pivot between a slant inactive position abutting the stop and an upright active position restricting the aperture in the end wall. During backwash operations, water is introduced to the flume and enters each duct in the lower portion of the distributor, and the pressure of the incoming water causes the orifice plate to pivot from the slant position to the upright position, reducing the cross-sectional area of the aperture in the end wall and thereby regulating the velocity of backwash flow from the flume into the lateral inlet.

  • Patent number: 5084618
Abstract: Autofocus method and apparatus capable of quickly detecting the focal point in an electron microscope in spite of the magnetic aftereffects of the ferromagnetic substance forming the objective lens. The autofocus method is initiated by causing the electron beam emitted from the microscope to hit a specimen at a first angle. Under this condition, the excitation current fed to the objective lens is continuously varied between values. At the same time, a video signal obtained from the resulting projected image is sampled at fixed intervals to obtain a first set of data. Then, the beam is caused to hit the specimen at a second angle. Under this condition, the excitation current fed to the objective lens is continuously varied between values. Simultaneously, a video signal produced from the resulting projected image is sampled at fixed intervals to obtain a second set of data. These two sets of data are compared to find the focal point.

  • Patent number: 5080489
Abstract: A phase-modulated fiber optic gyroscope comprises a signal generating a signal generating section, a photoelectric converter section and a signal processing section. The signal generating section includes a light source, an optical path for propagating light from the light source clockwise and counterclockwise, and a phase modulator for modulating the light propagating through the optical path. The photoelectric converter section converts an optical signal received from the signal generating section into an electric signal. The signal processing section derives a direction of rotation and a velocity of rotation from the electric signal received from the photoelectric converter section. The signal processing section includes an analog-to-digital converter for converting the electric signal received from the photoelectric converter section into a digital signal, and a digital signal processor for carrying out angle calculations based on the digital signal received from the analog-to-digital converter.

  • Patent number: 5080062
Abstract: A method for operating a drive unit comprised of an internal combustion engine having a hydraulic aggregate group connected to it. The amount of fuel supplied to the engine in the upper idling speed range is limited by a proportionally acting speed regulator. The power consumption of the hydraulic aggregate group is reduced by a maximum load regulator when the engine is overloaded. Theretofore the hydraulic aggregate group is adjusted toward a lower power consumption after the engine speed drops below an arbitrarily rated RPM which is monitored by the maximum load regulator. In order to facilitate a variable power limitation without the use of a hydraulic power limiter, the working RPM of the maximum load regulation is set at an arbitrary value corresponding to a desired power output between the nominal speed of the engine and the upper idling speed of the engine.
