Abstract: An extensible and retractable telescopic chute for delivery of bulk materials includes a plurality of nestable chute segments, namely, an uppermost segment adapted to be attached to the discharge end of a bulk material handling machine, a lowermost chute segment and a plurality of intermediate chute segments therebetween. A yoke member surrounds the lowermost chute segment and is attached thereto. A pair of sheave support posts upwardly extend on opposed sides of the yoke member. Each of the posts carry a rotatable sheave wheel which are respectively adapted to operably engage a wire rope of the hoist mechanism of the material handling machine. The yoke member bears the loading weight of the nested chute segments as the telescopic chute is retracted so as to avoid sidewall deformation of the lowermost segment. The vertically extending sheave support posts locate the sheave wheels well above a center of gravity of the nested chute segments to stabilize the chute assembly above a vertical axis.
Abstract: An electromagnetic actuator for producing axial forces between a stator element and a rotor element. The stator and rotor elements comprise structural bases with a laminated magnetic flux carrying assemblies secured therein. The laminated assemblies comprise a plurality of ferromagnetic sheets, each sheet extending substantially radially from and parallel to the axis of rotation. The rotor and stator elements are axially spaced with respective laminated assemblies in facing relationship.
Abstract: Sulphated vinyl polymers such as sulphated polyvinylalcohol, sulphated copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid and vinylalcohol, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, have an antiviral effect against human immunodeficiency virus and may therefore be used as a therapeutic agent for treating retrovirus infections like AIDS and AIDS-related diseases. Their antiviral activity is apparently based on inhibition of virus adsorption; their inhibitory effect on giant cell formation is stronger than that of dextran sulphate.
Abstract: A backwash strainer including a body, a strainer element having an inlet side contained in the body, and a space defined between the body and the strainer element. The body includes an inlet to the strainer element and an outlet from the annular space. A nozzle for directing cleaning fluid against the inlet side of the strainer element for dislodging particulate matter from the inlet side of the strainer element mounts to the body. A backwash arm for collecting the cleaning fluid and dislodging particulate matter mounts to the body. The backwash arm is positioned adjacent to and is in close proximity to the inlet side of the strainer element and the nozzle. The backwash arm has an axially extending slot defined by two spaced members having ends positioned adjacent to the nozzle. The backwash arm and the nozzle together may be moveable about a central axis relative to the strainer element.

Abstract: An expandable arbor for sighting a scope on a gun having a body with a conical portion and an axial throughbore. A shaft is journaled in the throughbore, and the shaft carries a knob on one end and a resilient plug on the other end, with a travelling spreader disk on a threaded portion of the shaft adjacent the plug. The plug is inserted into the muzzle of a gun barrel, and the knob is tightened to draw the spreader disk into the plug, thereby causing the plug to expand to hold the arbor in the gun barrel and concentrically align the arbor within the bore. The arbor has a flat on a rear portion for receiving a set screw to mount a bore sighter on the arbor for aligning the scope on the gun.
Abstract: A process for the catalytic decomposition of chlorofluoro-alkanes commonly named as "flons" into harmless substances against destructing ozone layer of the stratosphere by using the catalyst comprising alumina or alumina -silica complexed oxide, wherein the range of Al/(Al+Si)atomic ratio is 1.0 to 0.5, in the presence of steam at the temperature of 350.degree. to 1.000.degree. C.
Abstract: The invention concerns a material for covering the metal contacting surfaces of casting elements such as slide gate valves and casting nozzles and shrouds to resist steel erosion and alumina deposition during the continuous casting of aluminum killed steel. It is comprised of a fused mixture of calcium oxide and zirconia, with a calcium oxide content of between about 20% and about 60% by weight and preferably between about 20% and about 50% by weight, the composition may include a binder producing carbon/carbon bonds by sintering. The material may also include a ceramic bond or may be applied as a fused layer by plasma spraying.

Abstract: A cap for filter underdrain blocks is provided, wherein the cap has a porous body with a top surface, a bottom surface and downwardly extending flanges. The cap is installed on a filter block having a plurality of orifices in a top wall of the filter block for channelling fluids to and from an overyling filter media. The bottom surface of the cap along with the flanges define a distribution chamber above the orifices, and the cap has a porosity such that a fine grain filter media may be placed directly on the top surface of the cap without media penetrating therethrough and clogging the underdrain blocks. The distribution chamber enhances distribution of backwash fluids throughout the filter media, and the cap eliminates the need for a separate gravel support layer to be installed between the fine grain filter media and the underdrain blocks.

Abstract: A method for providing uniform temperature in a furnace, such as a soaking pit or a reheat furnace is disclosed. Temperatures at a front wall and a burner wall within the heating chamber are constantly monitored by a computer, and the computer operates a direct-fired burner, or for example, a pair of regenerative burners, in one of two modes to place heat either at the front wall or the burner wall. The burner is oversized in relation to a maximum firing rate required by the heating chamber design. To heat the front wall, an impulse firing mode is initiated by the computer wherein the burner is fired at its full, overrated capacity for a time proportionally less than a normal firing cycle. To heat the burner wall, the computer initiates a proportional firing mode wherein the burner is fired for the full normal cycle, but at a rate which is equivalent to the actual firing rate demand calculated by the computer.
Abstract: A washer insert is made preferably of plastic for use with a bearing plate and a mine roof bolt. The bearing plate includes an upper surface, lower surface and a hole passing therethrough. The roof bolt includes a shaft having a head attached to the shaft. The outer diameter of the head is greater than the outer diameter of the shaft. The washer insert includes a hollow first section having a first end and an inner diameter equal to or greater than the outer diameter of the roof bolt shaft and less than the outer diameter of the roof bolt head. A flange attaches to the first end of the first section extending outwardly from the first section and coaxial with the first section.
Abstract: A laparoscopic trocar has a sleeve which may be selectively fixed to an abdominal wall by a bumper in cooperation with a balloon mounted on the distal end of the sleeve. After the trocar and the distal end of the sleeve are inserted into the abdomen, the trocar is withdrawn from the sleeve and the balloon is inflated by a syringe through the distensible coupling and a balloon inflation duct. The sleeve includes ratchets on its outer surface, and the bumper has a ratchet tooth in its inner channel. The bumper is free to slide over the ratchets in the direction of the balloon in order to clamp the abdominal wall between the bumper and the balloon. The ratchet tooth ensures that the bumper will not move backward along the sleeve, and a hands-free conduit for insertion of surgical instruments into the abdominal cavity is thereby created. The bumper may be released and the balloon deflated to permit removal of the sleeve from the abdomen.
Abstract: A method for braking a wheeled vehicle which has at least one adjustable hydrostatic drive unit with a variable displacement pump and a motor and a driving engine wherein the vehicle driving engine absorbs a drag moment and the kinetic energy of the vehicle is partially reduced hydraulically after the maximum drag moment which is absorbable by the vehicle driving engine is exceeded. In the method positive hydraulic braking is achieved when a limiting rpm of the driving engine is exceeded and the vehicle is braked to a speed at which the incline output power is less than or of the same magnitude as the drag power which is absorbable by the driving engine.

The resilient locking arrangement on an end of the spindle is engaged with the locking arrangement on the periphery of an opening in an end plate to connect the spindle and the end plates. A moveable slide is located within each end of the spindle to move axially relative to the spindle between a retracted position within the spindle and an extended position partially out of the spindle.
