  • Patent number: 5052168
Abstract: Operations associated with the reciprocating suction arms of a mail extraction device are modified to prevent bleed through from occurring as the opposing faces of an envelope are spread open by the reciprocating arms by drawing an air flow through the suction arms which is sufficient to draw the envelope faces to the suction arms without necessitating their contact with the envelope, and each other. This may be achieved using a vacuum pump of increased output, or by developing a burst in air flow drawn by the suction arms, at an appropriate point just prior to their closure.

  • Patent number: 5048477
Abstract: This fuel supply is characterized in that a starting pump 49 for supplying the fuel in a fuel tank 25 by suction to a starting nozzle port 41, is driven by a fuel motor 53. Starting of the engine is executed by the use of a starting motor or a recoil starter, by supplying the fuel in the fuel tank 25 to the starting nozzle port 41 through sucking of the fuel with the starting fuel pump 49 which is turned by the fuel motor 53, thereby facilitating the ignition by augmenting the concentration of the mixed gas.

  • Patent number: 5049162
Abstract: A plastic sealing element for dry cells includes a radially symmetrical, contrally perforated base element, the upper side of which is provided with an elastomeric sealing material which is extruded in the form of a circumferential annular bead, and a process for its manufacture. After the sealing element is pre-assembled with the cell's metal housing cover and the cell is assembled, the annular bead is pressed flat during final crimping so that a sealing zone having a small cross section and defining a long leakage path is developed between the cover and the base element, effectively preventing the leakage of electrolyte or water vapor, which is especially diffuse from the cell's porous carbon rod conductor, into the cell's sealing zone.

  • Patent number: 5047302
Abstract: An aluminum substrate, with its natural oxide film intact, is made suitable for the electrochemical deposition polymerization of the electrode-active organic material, and for further use as an electrolyte holder and a charge eliminator, by providing the aluminum substrate with an electron-conducting coating of Au, Pt, Ni, Cr, Cr-Ni or C. In blank form, following pickling in an alkali, the aluminum substrate can either directly receive the deposit, or can be prepared for this purpose by electrochemical coating with a corrosion-resistant heavy metal. The aluminum can be used in the form of a netting or expanded metal so as to achieve a particularly firm connection between the metal and the polymer, and so that the resulting mesh cavities can be used to incorporate the amount of electrolyte which is necessary for charging of the polymer electrode. This allows the use of a thinner separator as the electrolyte reservoir, improving the power density of the cell.

  • Patent number: 5032290
Abstract: A method of water supply for a building construction capable of preventing the deterioration of the water quality even when the water is not extracted over an extended period of time. The method includes the steps of: receiving water externally supplied to the building construction by a receiving reservoir; reserving the water received by the receiving reservoir by an upper reservoir located above the receiving reservoir; supplying the water through the water supply pipes leading the water from the upper reservoir to individual faucets located between the receiving reservoir and the upper reservoir from which the water can be extracted; and circulating the water in the water supply pipes by returning the water back to one of the receiving reservoir and the upper reservoir. The system performing this method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5030941
Abstract: To reduce the occurrence of false alarms, the disclosed system incorporates an auxiliary sensor for detecting the presence of a shopper passing through the electronic article surveillance device, such that the device is operated continuously, and the auxiliary sensor is used to enable external alarms of the device only upon detecting the shopper's presence. Thus, while the device continuously monitors field-induced signals which are received, activation of the external alarm is permitted only when a shopper passes through the security device and is detected by the auxiliary sensor. Sounding of the alarm is then based upon an analysis of the data received at and just prior to the detected approach of the shopper to be monitored, eliminating phantom alarms while significantly reducing false alarms and merchandise-activated alarms.

  • Patent number: 5028772
Abstract: A scanner can read machine-readable code on an object. A scanner has a scanning device, a data device, and a registration device. The scanning device can repetitively scan the code and provide a scan signal repetitively corresponding to at least fragments of the code. The data device is coupled to the scanning device and responds to its scan signal for repetitively storing it. The registration device is coupled to the data device for reconstructing the code from at least two of the fragments of the code. The registration device relatively shifts the code fragments until they are in registration. Thus one of the fragments provides a beginning portion of the code and the other an ending portion. Both fragments provide a registered middle portion of the code.

  • Patent number: RE33667
Abstract: A three-part telescoping uncoupling lever assembly is disclosed for railroad cars which are equipped with standard draft gear cushioning. The assembly includes a plastic sleeve formed from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (U.H.M.W.) and a pair of unitary extension bars in sliding engagement within the sleeve. One end of each extension bar is bent to form a lock lifter hook or a handle for performing the uncoupling function. Each extension bar includes a shaft and an integral bent retainer, the bent retainers being positioned within the sleeve. The retainers are maintained in parallel sliding arrangement within juxtaposed channels extruded in the U.H.M.W. polyethylene sleeve. The hook and the handle are located on opposite ends of the assembly, the total length of which can be varied automatically between maximum and minimum lengths, dependent upon the corresponding distance between the coupler and sill bracket as that distance changes due to coupler impact and side swing.
