  • Patent number: 4865927
Abstract: Alkaline MnO.sub.2 /Zn cells having nickel-plated steel cups as the cathode collector show deterioration of their discharge characteristics after high-temperature storage, which can be prevented by an additive in the cathode paste which forms a strong complex with nickel. Nickel oxide layers of high ohmic resistance, which are the cause of the contact resistance between the cathode and the nickel coating of the steel cup, are accordingly dissolved or transformed. Imidazole, 2-picolinic acid, dimenthylglyoxime, 4,5-dihydroxbenzene-1,3-disulfonic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline are particularly effective additives for compounding into the cathode. Preferred amounts are between 0.001 wt. % and 1 wt. %.

  • Patent number: 4865928
Abstract: For the effective removal of Joule heat from the interior of a high-performance lead battery, especially those with a fixed electrolyte, at least one of the negative grid plates which participate in the development of the electrodes are provided with a U-shaped tube which surrounds and is attached to the grid, in place of the usual grid frame, and through which a coolant circulates. Especially advantageous due to its capacity to conduct heat is a combination of a lead-coated, copper mesh grid and a copper tube, with a residual strip of unexpanded copper sheeting attached to the grid mesh along the remaining upper section of the frame, and developing the conducting lug.

  • Patent number: 4844876
Abstract: Method for the selective removal of H.sub.2 S from a H.sub.2 S-containing gas by operating in a single column (1) comprising an upper absorption zone (11) and a lower regeneration zone (12) separated by a medial enrichment zone (17). A selective absorbing and regeneratable liquid capable of absorbing H.sub.2 S is introduced at the upper portion of the column and flows successively into the zones (11) and (17) and finally into (12). The absorbing liquid meets the gas to be treated, which is injected through a conduit (9), in the zone (11) while the regenerated absorbing liquid is tapped at the bottom (4) of the column and brought back through a conduit (5) into said zone (11). At the head (2) of the column, a gas having a reduced content of H.sub.2 S is discharged and by means of a system (18) provided in the zone (17) an acid gas fraction rich in H.sub.2 S is tapped. Application to the production of a highly H.sub.2 S enriched gas effluent from a gas containing H.sub.2 S and an appreciable quantity of CO.sub.

  • Patent number: 4842592
Abstract: An adaptive connector assembly for engaging a catheter or the like comprises a pair of segments adapted for telescoping engagement with one another so as to develop a centrally disposed cavity for receiving a plug formed of a compressible material. An end of one of the segments has an opening which communicates with the cavity and which is adapted to receive the catheter therein. The plug also has a centrally disposed channel for receiving the catheter from the opening. A snap-fit engagement is developed between the telescoping segments so that when the telescoping segments are engaged, the plug is placed in compression, constricting the channel about the catheter and thereby engaging the catheter within the adaptive connector assembly.

  • Patent number: 4840857
Abstract: There are provided primary cells comprising a negative lithium electrode and a positive CrO.sub.x cathode wherein 2.ltoreq..times..ltoreq.2.9. These cells are devoid of the conventional separator between the electrodes. Instead, there is provided at the outer face of the chromium oxide electrode, a barrier layer formed by the reaction of lithium and chromium oxide. The exact constitution of this barrier layer is not known. The barrier layer is ion conductive but not electro-conductive and has a substantially lower ohmic resistance than the conventional polypropylene or paper separators. There is thus provided a cell of high current capacity. Such cells can also be constructed utilizing magnesium dioxide, silver monoxide and disilver oxide or nickel hydroxide provided that said metal oxie cathodes are coated with a covering of chromium oxide.

  • Patent number: 4833615
Abstract: A mobile aerial device, which also has deployable outriggers, has sensors for the outrigger-supported weight, sensors for boom azimuth, elevation and extension, and sensors for other boom conditions. An on-board digital computer is programmed with load tables for the device. The various sensor signals and load table data are computer-processed to determine the approach of tipping or overload conditions. When operating near a dangerous obstacle which it is desired to avoid, the boom is initially caused to assume certain preparatory positions relative to the obstacle and data are computer-generated which extrapolate from these positions a region in space which represents a prohibitively close approach of the boom to the obstacle. The foregoing information is used to alert the operator to the approach of a dangerous condition and also to prevent the crane from performing movements which could cause tipping or which would encroach upon the prohibited region.

  • Patent number: 4828201
Abstract: A take-up assembly for operating a mechanism for loading and unloading the leader block of a tape cartridge, and for receiving the web of tape which it contains for subsequent transport, stores energy for transfer to the leader block loading/unloading mechanism when it is to operate to load or unload the leader block, so that even a conventional take-up motor is made capable of supplying the increased energy needed for leader block loading/unloading.A preferred take-up assembly includes a hub which is directly coupled to the take-up motor and which serves to receive the web of tape for direct transport, and a coupling which is nested within the hub and which receives the leader block loading/unloading mechanism. A pin depends from the coupling and into a circumferentially arranged slot formed inthe hub, to connect the hub and coupling as the pin engages the ends of the slot.

  • Patent number: 4818763
Abstract: Biologically active substance with standardizable hormonal activity, containing in a physiological medium at least one histone, particularly at least one histone H2 or an active area of said histone with immune system immunostimulating and/or endocrinological properties. Utilization of histones and/or segments of histones for producing such a preparation for medical purposes. Said histones may be extracted from biological starting materials, for example calf thymus. Since H2A and H2B histones of oxen and humans are identical, ox histones may also be used for such a preparation for human medical purposes. The preparation according to the present invention may also contain only the variable evolution segments or part of at least one H2 histone. The invention is based on the fact that the biologically active area of an immunostimulating or endocrinologically active histone is located in the variable evolution histone segment. The preparation according to the present invention may be used in immunotherapy.

  • Patent number: 4816359
Abstract: A polymer electrode having a thickness which is distributed among several superimposed thin film layers exhibits significantly higher area-specific capacity and current-carrying capacity. • Patent number: 4817137
Abstract: An apparatus for effectively monitoring the hook status of a remotely stationed telephone, and a sub-audible tone associated with a corresponding alarm reporting device, monitors variations in impedance in the subscriber loop, preferably from the central facility which is monitoring the remote location. To this end, a disturbance (voltaage signal) is introduced onto the subscriber loop by an appropriate source. Steps are then taken to measure potential variations in this voltage signal, and to determine the hook status of the subscriber loop based upon these variations in potential. To make sure that the ancillary equipment which is being connected to the telephone network will not adversely affect basic telephone services, care is taken to make sure that the signal which is introduced onto the subscriber loop will neither create audible noises on the telephone line, nor interfere with the operation of the switching equipment of the telephone company.

  • Patent number: 4804652
Abstract: Mucopolysaccharides biologically active and more specific than heparin, particularly with respect to the blood factor Xa. These mucopolysaccharides may be obtained by partial depolymerization, under controlled conditions, of heparin, by the action of a chemical agent such as nitrous acid. The conditions implemented allow the preparation of mucopolysaccharides having a USP titer lower than that of the starting heparin and a Yin-Wessler titer at least equal to that of said heparin. These products may be used particularly as antithrombotic drugs.
