Patent number: 8294105Abstract: A method for controlling an electronic device includes providing a display screen and a sensing assembly including at least one photoreceiver and phototransmitters. Emission of infrared light by the phototransmitters is controlled as an object moves in a first specified pattern of movement and then moves in a second specified pattern of movement, and measured signals are generated. The measured signals are evaluated to identify the first specified pattern, to detect a reference offset location, and to determine, for each of a group of time periods when the object is moving in the second specified pattern, a corresponding location of the object during that period. A centering operation is performed in response to the identification, wherein the centering operation moves an indicator to an initial predetermined reference location on the display screen; and sequential locations of the indicator are controlled in accordance with the corresponding determined locations.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2009Date of Patent: October 23, 2012Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventors: Rachid Alameh, Thomas Merrell, Kenneth A.
