  • Patent number: 5749607
Abstract: A multi-ring gasket (24) and flanged pipe joint assembly employing such gasket. The gasket (24) for sealing the joint between two flanged pipes of polyvinylchloride, chlorinated polyvinylchloride or fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe is provided. The gasket (24) has an inner ring (26), an outer ring (28) and a plurality of spokes (30) connecting the inner ring (26) to the outer ring (28). Voids (34), or reduced thickness areas, are formed between the inner ring, the outer ring and the spokes so as to leave substantial space between the flanges at the voids and thereby reduce the uneven distribution of stress on the flanges when the gasket (24) is installed. The joint assembly employing such gasket (24) has a groove (50) disposed in an inside surface of a flange (12 or 16) and has a channel (51) disposed through the flange. The channel (51) is in communication with the groove (50) and, by means of a port (56), an outside surface of the flange.

  • Patent number: 5748644
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing self-diagnostic information from a circuit board. A circuit board is provided with an on-board processor, an on-board ROM containing diagnostic test software, a frequency generator adapted to produce an electrical signal having a predetermined frequency when an unacceptable response is determined, wherein the predetermined frequency corresponds substantially to the event within the diagnostic test sequence of a particular test for which an unacceptable response is determined. The signal is presented at an output terminal of the circuit board. The status of the circuit board is determined by measuring the frequency of the signal at the output terminal and comparing that frequency to an index of corresponding defects.

  • Patent number: 5748001
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fast response and distortion measurement of a signal transfer device. A computer processor generates a multitone test signal of predetermined duration and stores it in a memory. The test signal is read out, converted to analog form, if necessary, and applied to the input of a device under test. The output produced by the device under test in response to the test signal is acquired and digitized, if necessary, and a Fast Fourier Transform is performed on the acquired data to determine its spectral characteristics. Frequency response, harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion, phase distortion, wow and flutter and other signal transfer characteristics are measured by the CPU by analysis of the output signal.

  • Patent number: 5710655
Abstract: A cavity thickness compensated etalon filter. A tuning medium is placed in a Fabry-Perot etalon cavity. The index of refraction of the tuning medium varies as a function of voltage applied across the medium. The etalon is formed of two generally flat substrates disposed substantially parallel to one another. Each substrate has a layer of conductive material within the cavity adjacent the substrate. Each substrate also has a layer of reflective material within the cavity adjacent the substrate. At least one layer of reflective material is only partially reflective so as to enable light to pass into and out of the cavity. Liquid crystal material may be used as a tuning medium in the cavity. In the case of liquid crystal material, the etalon also comprises an alignment layer disposed within the cavity adjacent each substrate to pre-order the liquid crystal material.

  • Patent number: 5676675
Abstract: A laparo-suture needle and method for use thereof. A medical suturing instrument employs an outer, hollow shaft having a laterally-disposed, elongate handle at a proximal end and an elongate, inner shaft disposed within the outer shaft. The inner shaft has a cutting edge at the distal end and extends out of the outer shaft at the proximal end, terminating in a spring-loaded push button. A lateral notch is formed in the inner shaft proximal of the cutting edge. The spring forces the inner shaft rearwardly so as to pull the notch within the outer shaft. By gripping the handle and placing pressure on the push button, the inner shaft is moved forward so as to expose the notch. A suture may then be placed in the notch so that the instrument grips the suture between the outer shaft and the inner shaft when the push button is released.

  • Patent number: 5550963
Abstract: A visually graded display of digitally compressed waveforms for a digital storage oscilloscope. A histogram is formed by sampling or otherwise resolving a data set of values corresponding to an independent variable to produce a quantized set of values over a selected compression interval of the independent variable. The compression interval represents equal quanta of the independent variable and has associated therewith a set of histogram bins, each containing a number, wherein the number contained within each bin represents a weighted number of hits associated with vectors connecting selected pairs of such dependent variable values, wherein each vector is associated uniquely with one pair. The numbers are weighted for each vector according to drawing techniques, the drawing techniques alone or in combination allowing choices for signal display ranging between retaining maximal signal information, for emulating the display of an analog oscilloscope, or retaining less signal information.

  • Patent number: 5521599
Abstract: A high speed analog signal sampling system. The system comprises a timing chain having a plurality of delay elements arranged in series and a sample rate multiplier having a delay lock control system responsive to the outputs of first, second and third parallel delay elements in the sample rate multiplier to control the delay of the second parallel delay element so that its strobe signal output occurs one-half the time between the strobe signal outputs of the first parallel delay element and the third parallel delay element. The first, second and third parallel delay elements are the first three parallel delay elements of the timing chain, and a control signal of the delay lock control system is used to adjust and control the amount of delay introduced by every other parallel delay element after the second parallel delay element.

  • Patent number: 5511317
Abstract: A sighting device for use with a projectile launcher having a sighting element that is adjustable in height and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the sighting element's height to match substantially the height of a target as apparent at the sighting device in the line of sight to the target. The sighting device further comprises a targeting mechanism that, in response to the height adjustment, automatically displaces the position of the sighting element in a generally vertical plane so that maintenance of alignment of the target in the sighting element requires the user to adjust the elevation of the launcher and, consequently, the launch angle. In one embodiment, the sighting device comprises a pair of opposed rotatable disks, the disks having respective predetermined irregular peripheries. The sighting element comprises an aperture formed between selectable portions of the peripheries along the line of sight.
