Abstract: AMS-1B crystalline borosilicate molecular sieve is prepared by reacting under crystallization conditions, in substantial absence of a metal or ammonium hydroxide, an aqueous mixture containing an oxide of silicon, an oxide of boron, an alkylammonium cation or a precursor of an alkylammonium cation, and ethylenediamine, and the product formed from such method.
Abstract: The invention is directed to laterally confined optical waveguide devices in semiconductors using quantum-well structures. An optical waveguide having a core comprising at least one quantum-well structure is interposed between first and second cladding regions such that an optical beam inserted into the core region spreads laterally with respect to a primary direction of the beam. Contacts are fabricated on the surface of the top cladding region and serve as means for applying an electric field to the core of the waveguide. The electric field induces a change in the refractive index of the portion of the quantum-well structure within the field. The change in the refractive index functions to laterally confine the propagation of the optical beam to the region of the core within the electric field, while maintaining a low loss transmission.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of poly(aryl ether) block copolymers with polycarbonates and/or polyarylates comprising the steps ofa) reacting a hydroxy-terminated poly(aryl ether) with a high molecular weight aromatic polycarbonate, or a high molecular weight polyarylate, or a high molecular weight poly(arylatecarbonate) to yield a block copolymer; followed byb) coupling the material obtained in step a) under poly(aryl ether) forming conditions via the hydroxyl/activated dihalobenzenoid compound, or the hydroxyl/activated dinitrobenzenoid compound polycondensation processis described. The polymerization is preferably performed in an integrated manner starting with the poly(aryl ether)-forming monomers and using a polar aprotic solvent. Materials with an overall excellent combination of properties are obtained.
Abstract: A process for producing tubular film from a thermoplastic molten material, including supplying an annular stream of thermoplastic material through a passageway substantially free of flow interurptions having a plurality of axially aligned-annularly spaced feed ports, funneling and recombining the annular stream of thermoplastic material after being supplied through the feed ports to evenly recombine the thermoplastic material, and forming a tubular stream of thermoplastic film having a substantially uniform thickness throughout.
Abstract: Effective quenching is provided in a catalytic cracking process to increase product yield and decrease thermal cracking. To this end, the quench is injected at special locations and a special quench is used. In the illustrated embodiment, the quench is injected into the oil product immediately downstream of an external gross cut separator before the product enters a disengaging vessel and the quench comprises cycle oil.

Abstract: A regioselective nitration process for diphenyl compounds which can be carried out at about ambient temperature in which each ring of the diphenyl compound is selectively nitrated in the para position to form the corresponding di(4-nitrophenyl) compound. Such compounds as diphenyl carbonate, 2,2-diphenylpropane, 2,2-diphenylhexafluoropropane, diphenyl sulfide, diphenyl ketone, diphenyl sulfone, and the like can be converted to an isomeric mixture containing an enhanced amount of the corresponding di(4-nitrophenyl) compound, which mixture may be reduced or purified and reduced to the di(4-aminophenyl) analogues for use in the manufacture of polyamides, polyimides, and polyamide-imides.
Abstract: This invention relates to moldable polyarylates and in particular to moldable polyarylate compositions which have repeating units derived from bis-(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone (TMBS), optionally a dihydric phenol such as 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane (Bisphenol A) and a mixture of isophthalic acid and terephthalic acid or derivatives thereof. Abstract: A method is provided for cyclizing an alkenylbenzene to a dialkyltetrahydronaphthalene (dialkyltetralin) in the presence of a solid cyclization catalyst constituted by a relatively low acidity, ultrastable, hydrogen form of crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite Y having a sodium oxide-to-alumina bulk molar ratio in the range of about 0.001 to about less than 1, a unit cell size no greater than about 24.3 Angstroms, and a sodium content of no more than about 0.4 percent by weight, calculated as elemental sodium and based on the weight of the zeolite. This catalyst provides more activity, more stability, higher product purity, and higher product yields than known prior art zeolite cyclization catalysts notwithstanding its relatively lower acidity. A preferred alkenylbenzene is 5-(o-tolyl)-pent-2-ene which is converted in relatively high yields and relatively high selectivities to 1,5 dimethyltetrahydronaphthalene.
