Abstract: A regioselective acylation process is provided for coverting a 2-methylnaphthalene compound to a 2-acetyl-6-methylnaphthalene compound. The process is conducted under liquid phase conditions in an acylation inert solvent using a complexing agent which is regiospecific for the beta position of naphthalene and which is a thermally stable nitrohydrocarbon compound. Preferred such agents are nitrobenzene, o-nitrotoluene, and mesitylene. Also provided is a novel method for producing a 2-acetyl-6-methylnaphthalene compound of relatively high purity from isomer mixtures by recrystallization from a hydrocarbon solvent, such as n-octane, isooctane, or n-nonane.

The inventive process and a catalyst provided highly efficient and selective conversion of synthesis gas to paraffin wax.
Abstract: A high performance cruise missile grease is provided that performs well at extremely cold temperatures and moderately elevated temperatures, as well as under normal operation conditions. The high performance grease comprises: a lithium soap thickener, a synthetic base oil blend of polyalphaolefin and extreme pressure antiwear additives and inhibitors comprising dithiocarbamates, phosphates, and hydroxides.
Abstract: Novel maleic anhydride catalysts comprising phosphorus-vanadium oxides and phosphorus-vanadium-co-metal oxides which under reaction conditions for the manufacture of maleic anhydride from butane feedstock do not expand to the point of crushing and producing fines.
Abstract: A method for the preparation of miscible blends comprising biphenyl-containing poly(aryl sulfones) and polyimides is disclosed. The process comprises adding the monomeric polycarboxylic acid and aromatic diamine components of the polyimide to a suitable polyaryl sulfone in a vented extruder and melt-processing the resulting mixture, thereby polymerizing the monomers to form the polyimide component of the blend.
Abstract: A molded article of permanent ovenware comprising (A) 35-85% by weight of a wholly aromatic polyester resin; (B) 15-65% by weight of a specifically defined talc containing a minimum amount of materials decomposable at elevated temperatures; and (C) 0-20% titanium dioxide, wherein the wholly aromatic polyester resin (A) is a blend comprising a first resin based on repeating units of hydroquinone, isophthalic acid (or mixtures of iso- and terephthalic acids), and para-hydroxybenzoic acid, and a second resin based on repeating units of biphenol, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and para-hydroxybenzoic acid. The ovenware shows excellent resistance to blistering, bubbling and cracking during molding and oven use.

Abstract: Nonintrusive sensors capable of measuring various storage cell parameters such as voltage, state-of-charge, electrolyte level, internal resistance, and temperature are attached to a monitoring module which gathers and processes signals representative of information concerning the condition of electrolytic storage cells and transmits the information to a central computer for further processing. In response to commands issued by the central computer, appropriate maintenance and/or repair operations can be initiated. Alternatively, the system described can be used to automatically perform such maintenance tasks as checking and adding electrolyte levels, reducing the voltage in cells whose output voltage is too high, and leveling the state-of-charge of each cell in an array of electrolytic storage cells. The system can monitor other functions of the electrolytic storage cells, including the evolution of hydrogen gas and the accumulation of sediments in individual electrolytic storage cells.
