Abstract: A process for the para-directed chlorination of alkylbenzenes comprises reacting an alkylbenzene with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst mixture previously prepared by the steps of (a) reacting sulfur monochloride with toluene or chlorotoluene in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, and (b) reacting the reaction product of step (a) with chlorine.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel organic compound, (3-trifluoromethyl)-benzoyl cyanide, and a process for the preparation thereof comprising(a) converting (3-trifluoromethyl)-benzotrichloride to the corresponding benzoyl chloride,b) cyanation of the benzoyl chloride to produce the corresponding benzoyl cyanide, (3-trifluoromethyl)-benzoyl cyanide.
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel process for the production of 1-phenyl-3-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-propanone. The process comprises the steps of:(a) condensing 3-trifluoromethylbenzaldehyde with acetophenone under basic conditions to form a substituted chalcone,(b) epoxidation of the substituted chalcone to produce the corresponding epoxide,(c) converting the epoxide to a chlorohydrin,(d) catalytic hydrogenolysis of the chlorohydrin to produce a diol and subsequently converting the diol into the corresponding alcohol, and(e) oxidizing the alcohol to produce 1-phenyl-3-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-propanone.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel organic compound, phenyl alpha,beta-epoxy-beta-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)ethyl ketone. Abstract: This invention relates to improved abrading elements for honing tools containing a plurality of abrading elements, which may be rotated and/or radially moved in contact with the surface to be honed, the improvement comprising an abrading element embodying an abrasive article, having an abrading face and an opposite, substantially flat, attachment face, in a molded plastic, unitary, support structure, the unitary support structure having a substantially flat support face to which the attachment face of the abrasive article attaches, the support face having voids therein such that from about 70 to 90 percent of the surface area of the attachment face of the abrasive article is in contact with the support face and the support face being resiliently supported by a triangular truss support bridge intimately molded therewith.

Abstract: A method and a useful catalyst composition for the production of aromatic nitriles for the corresponding nuclearly halogenated aromatic compounds which contain from 1 to 4 halogen atoms substituted selected from chlorine, bromine and iodine are described.The method involves the steps of heating the halogenated aromatic compound to a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. for a period of at least 2 hours in the presence of potassium cyanide and a catalyst composition comprised of:(a) a ether component selected from the group consisting of 18-crown-6 ether, polyethers, alkyoxypolyethers and mixtures thereof having a molecular weight between about 200 and about 25,000, and(b) a palladium salt complex comprised of:(1) a palladium salt selected from palladium iodide, chloride, bromide and mixtures thereof, and(2) an organophosphine selected from the group consisting of alkyarylphosphines and triarylphosphines containing from about 8 to about 80 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A process for the production of nuclear chlorinated alkylbenzenes comprises reacting xylene with chlorine in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and a co-catalyst comprising a thianthrene compound or a mixture of thianthrene compounds characterized by the formula: ##STR1## where n is 0 to 1, and each X is independently hydrogen, an electron-withdrawing substituent or an electron-donating substituent with the proviso that the total number of electron-donating substituents is no more than four; the total number of electron-withdrawing substituents is at least one and no more than seven; no more than three electron-donating substituents are present at the peri-positions; and when no electron-donating substituents are present on the thianthrene nucleus, at least one electron-withdrawing substituent is present at a peri-position.The process is particularly useful in the preparation of 4-chloro-o-xylene and 4-chloro-m-xylene from o-xylene and m-xylene respectively.

Abstract: An improved process for imparting durable flame retardancy to textile materials wherein said material is impregnated with a solution having a poly(hydroxyorgano) phosphonium cation content of from about 10 to about 60 percent by weight and having a pH of from about 2 to about 9, dried to a moisture content of from about 0 to about 8 percent, aerated by passing air through the dried material, cured by polymerizing the monomer on and in the cellulose material with exposure in an enclosed chamber to an atmosphere containing gaseous ammonia and thereafter contacting with water, the improvement comprising, impregnating said textile materials with a nitrogen containing material, contiguous with impregnation with the poly(hydroxyorgano) phosphonium cation containing solution, and, after contacting said material with said water, further exposing said material to an atmosphere containing gaseous ammonia.
Abstract: A process for imparting flame retardant property to cellulosic containing materials comprising the steps;(1) treating the cellulosic containing material with a solution containing poly (hydroxy organo) phosphonium cation;(2) exposing the treated cellulosic material to an atmosphere containing ammonia to polymerize the phosphonium compound;(3) treating the cellulosic material containing the polymerized phosphonium compound with a solution containing a poly (hydroxy organo) phosphonium salt and a nitrogen containing compound copolymerizable with said phosphonium halide; and p1 (4) heat curing the phosphonium salt composition.
Abstract: Polyhalobenzylic disulfooxonium compounds are produced by the reaction of aromatic methyl, halomethyl or hydroxymethyl substituents with sulfur trioxide. The disulfooxonium salts are readily converted to alcohols by hydrolysis to provide monomers for the production of fire resistant polymers and additives for polymers. Likewise, the disulfooxonium compounds of this invention present chemical intermediates for a wide range of useful products such as halogenated pesticides.
