  • Patent number: 5248366
Abstract: Flexible tubular film is helically cut into a flat strip by feeding the tubular film in flattened form from a supply source to a film feeding means advancing the flat film tube at a predetermined velocity to a tube expansion zone in which the flat tube is expanded into a generally cylindrical tube and passed axially over a hollow mandrel slightly less in external diameter than the diameter of the expanded tube to be cut helically while on the mandrel into a flat strop that is removed at an angle to the mandrel axis. The tube is expanded in the zone by inflation with air fed through the mandrel in a direction countercurrent to the direction of tube movement and under a pressure sufficient to render the expanded tube stiff as it slides over the mandrel and resistant to deformation while being helically cut.

  • Patent number: 5244697
Abstract: A drum, such as a drum for an electrostatic photocopying unit, is given a uniform coating of a liquid coating composition, such as an organic photoconductor, by arranging the drum on a vertical axis coaxially with a vessel containing a body of the coating composition of a depth generally equal to the vertical length of the drum, bringing the drum and vessel into substantially telescoping relation to dip the drum substantially into the coating composition, and causing the drum and vessel to undergo relative vertical displacement along the vertical axis by the sole force of gravity to thereby bring about a progressive vertical separation of the drum from the vessel leaving a coating of the composition on the drum surface. The separation is preferably controlled at a uniform rate by means e. g. of a hydraulic cylinder supporting a movable one of the drum and vessel in opposition to the force of gravity while the gravitational force can be augmented by increasing the effective mass of the movable one.

  • Patent number: 5235348
Abstract: A housing for a light emitting diode recording head used for linewise recording information on a photoreceptor in a recording apparatus is constituted by elongated extrusion molded base and cover sections held together in a unitary structure by injection molded and closure members. The cover section has opposed inclined side walls engaged at their diverging margins on the base section and defining at their converging margins an elongated slot for receiving the lens array of the head. Preferably, the cover section is formed of two identical subsections with their converging margins held apart by an inner leg on each end member to define said slot. The end members and/or the ends of the base section can carry projections to facilitate accurate mounting of the head in the apparatus. The inner surfaces of the cover section can be contoured to provide sealing surfaces for cooperation with a sealing bead of resilient material surrounding the electrical components within the head.

  • Patent number: 5224996
Abstract: A curtain coater for applying a layer or film of a liquid coating composition as a falling curtain on a surface of a continuous web moving around an arc of a backing roller, has a curved air shield arranged in closely spaced parallel relation to the roller periphery extending around a segment of said periphery directly upstream of the falling curtain to define an air gap through which the web passes before reaching said curtain. At the opposite end regions of the air shield and also at opposite side regions thereof are provided means, such as projections or sections of increased thickness, for increasing the resistance to air flow in the gap at the end and side regions compared to the air flow resistance in the region of the shield intermediate the end and side regions. A suction device communicates with the gap in the intermediate region to reduce the air pressure therein.

  • Patent number: 5213648
Abstract: In a laminated product wherein at least one supported information-containing hydrophilic colloid layer is adhesively bonded on at least one of its surfaces to a protective hydrophobic resin sheet, improved adherence is achieved by using as the bonding adhesive a cationic crosslinked polymer obtained by:a) condensing a polyalkylenepolyamine containing at least two primary amino groups and at least one secondary or tertiary amino group with a dicarboxylic acid to form a polyamidoamine,b) subjecting the resultant polyamidoamine to a graft reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst with an alkene-1,2-imine, andc) crosslinking the resultant graft polymer with an epihalohydrin, an Alpha-Omega dihalohydrin ether or the ether compound obtained by reaction of epichlorohydrin with a water-soluble polyalkyleneoxide to form the water-soluble cationic polymer. With this adhesive bond, a tamper-proof seal can be obtained between the information-containing colloid layer and the hydrophobic resin protective sheet.

  • Patent number: 5183751
Abstract: Para-amino-salicylic acid (PASA) or a water-soluble salt thereof, e.g. of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonia or an amine is used for the stabilization of the enzymatic activity of peroxidase in aqueous medium. The stabilizing agent may be in the form of an aqueous solution compatible with peroxidase medium in which PASA or its salt is dissolved in a quantity efficacious for stabilization, preferentially comprised between about 8 .mu.g/ml and about 2000 .mu.g/ml of the solution based on PASA.
