  • Patent number: 4424609
Abstract: A device for retaining a cord or other elongated flexible element against relative longitudinal movement including a first member to which an actuating member is mounted for relative pivotal movement between locking and released positions, and a locking member carried by the actuating member for swinging movement therewith, and for swinging movement relative thereto, to clamp a cord or cords against the first member, with the latter preferably containing a recess having an essentially curving wall against which the locking member presses the elongated element in locking condition, and with the curving wall preferably being defined by a series of teeth following a curving pattern. The device may lock two spaced cords or cord ends, which may be directed to properly located positions between the gripping members by reception within spaced locating recesses in the locking member and by reception at opposite sides of a locating projection carried by the first mentioned member.

  • Patent number: 4423645
Abstract: A spinner for turning a well drilling kelly or the like and including a member connectible to the kelly to drive it rotatively, a reversible motor, and a drive between the rotor of the motor and said member including two gears for driving the member in opposite directions respectively, with the two gears being mounted by threaded connections for axial movement between active driving positions and retracted non-driving positions. Rotation of the motor acts by virtue of a threaded connection or connections to shift one of the gears to its active driving position to turn the driven member in a first direction, while retaining the second of the gears in its retracted position. Rotation of the motor in the opposite direction acts to shift the second of the gears to active position driving the member in its second direction while retracting the first of the gears to its inactive position.

  • Patent number: 4421179
Abstract: Well drilling apparatus including a powered drilling unit connectable to the upper end of a drill string and adapted to rotate it to drill a well, and a vertically extending guide track structure which guides the drilling unit for movement along the axis of the well, with a portion of the guide track structure being mounted for swinging movement between a drilling position in which the drilling unit is aligned with the axis of the well and a slightly inclined position in which the track structure guides the drilling unit for movement along an inclined axis in alignment with a mousehole, and with the drilling unit also preferably being mounted for movement to a laterally retracted position at a side of the well in which it leaves an area along the axis of the well unobstructed for use of conventional hoisting equipment in making a `round trip` of the drill string out of and then back into the well.

  • Patent number: 4421175
Abstract: A well drilling rig having a rotary table for driving a drill string rotatively and having jacking mechanism for lowering casing into the well after drilling, with the jacking mechanism including fluid pressure actuated piston and cylinder means which may be left in the rig during drilling and which are positioned low enough in the rig to avoid interference with operation of the rotary table. The jacking mechanism also includes a structure which is adapted to be connected to the piston and cylinder means when the casing or other well pipe is to be lowered and which is actuable upwardly and downwardly and carries one of two pipe gripping units for progressively jacking the pipe downwardly by vertical reciprocation of that structure. The reciprocating structure may take the form of a beam extending between two pistons and actuable thereby, with a second beam being connected to cylinders within which the pistons are contained and being utilized to support the second gripping element.

  • Patent number: 4417402
Abstract: The diameter of a thread is measured by screwing two gauge elements into simultaneous engagement with the thread to be measured, then turning the two gauge elements relative to one another to a setting in which their similar threads bear in opposite axial directions against the thread to be measured and confine that thread in a manner holding it against axial movement relative to the gauge elements, after which the diameter of the measured thread is determined by noting the relative rotary position of the two gauge elements, as indicated by relative positions of coacting markings on those parts.
