  • Patent number: 4608126
Abstract: An environmentally acceptable disposal site has at least one vapor break extending through a pile of synthetic fuel tailings, spent catalyst, spent ore, and/or other waste material. The vapor breaks can be permeable seams or columns of porous rocky overburden and/or a pneumatic pipeline. Circulation of air through the vapor breaks can be enhanced by air blowers, fans, or other force air inducers. The top and sides of the pile are covered with top soil and vegetated with trees, shrubbery, and grass to minimize erosion and blowing of the tailings as well as to provide a pleasing aesthetic appearance. The tailings preferably comprise spent oil shale which has been combusted, cooled, and moisturized. Desirably, the disposal site is built and operated in conjunction with a surface retort, combustor, heat recovery unit (cooler), and associated equipment.

  • Patent number: 4607389
Abstract: The present invention is a communication system for transmitting an electrical signal from a transmission tower and includes a first transceiver located adjacent the base of the tower and which is in communication with a source of an electrical signal which is to be transmitted. An enclosure is removably located adjacent the top of the tower and includes a second transceiver for receiving the transmitted electrical signal from the first transceiver and a third transceiver for retransmitting the electrical signal from the tower. By this arrangement there is no need for stringing coaxial cable from a ground based transmitter to the antenna mounted to the top of the tower, thereby eliminating the power loss associated with the use of such coaxial cable.

  • Patent number: 4605081
Abstract: A self-operating automatic control system and process is provided to automatically measure the gross weight, load, and length of trucks, such as at refineries, truck terminals, and depots. A central processing unit compares the truck's weight and length with state highway regulations and activates a laser printer or another printer to print a bill of lading when the measured weight is within legal limits. The system and process can also have various safety and weight indicators as well as a regulated control dispenser coupled to the central processing unit to automatically and remotely dispense authorized legal amounts of the load of material, such as gasoline or oil, into the trucks.

  • Patent number: 4603193
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polyamides, polyamide-imides and polyimides which process comprises preparing a salt of an aliphatic or aromatic diamine or a mixture of these and di, tri or tetracarboxylic acid or mixture of these or their corresponding anhydride by reacting both feedstocks at a temperature of about 300.degree. to 500.degree. F. in a solvent medium provided the water content of the resulting solution is below 25% water by weight the resulting salt solution is subjected to a pressure of about 1500-3000 psig and is then passed through a preheat zone where the temperature is increased to about 625.degree. F., the total residence time is kept at about 25 to about 50 seconds. The reactants are flashed through a control valve or nozzle to give an aerosol mist at a pressure of about 0-400 psig, the polymerization is further carried out in a flash reactor with a high heat flux and with wall temperatures of about 600.degree. F. to about 1000.degree. F. and melt temperatures of about 500.degree. F.
