  • Patent number: 4486689
Abstract: An emergency lighting unit having physical dimensions and electrical and electronic components and circuitry such that it can be directly substituted for a conventional hot cathode type fluorescent lamp in a conventional fluorescent lamp fixture which incorporates a rapid start type ballast. The emergency lighting unit comprises a direct current power supply in the form of rechargeable batteries, a light source in the form of one or more groups of low voltage high intensity miniature lamps, and electronic circuitry and components utilizing power supplied by the rapid start ballast for charging the batteries, monitoring their condition and reacting accordingly, and detecting the state of the normal alternating current power source and reacting accordingly. In a preferred embodiment, the emergency lighting unit utilizes pulses to detect the emergency or "FAIL" state of the system power. The pulses are supplied by a unique pulser unit which is designed to be directly substituted for a standard wall switch.

Two hollow rails extend into an aperture from opposite sides of a post with their ends located in the aperture. A hollow connecting member is located within the two hollow rails for connecting together the ends of the two hollow rails. The hollow connecting member has a slit formed through its wall along its length and is compressed such that it may be located within the two hollow rails. The hollow connecting member when located within the two hollow rails expands outward against the walls of the two hollow rails.

  • Patent number: 4472878
Abstract: A manually operated hair cutting device having a movable spring wire extending through the device. The wire has a base end for engaging one's head to regulate the length at which the hair is cut. The other end of the wire is connected to an activator which is adapted to be moved to forward and rear positions. As the activator is moved forward, the wire is moved through the device such that its base end is moved away from the cutting teeth. When the base end of the wire engages the head, and the activator is moved forward, the device moves upward along the wire. A movable stop normally prevents the handles from being moved together to prevent hair cutting action. An adjustable engager on the activator engages the stop and moves it out of the way as the activator moved forward to allow the handles to be moved together for hair cutting purposes.

  • Patent number: 4470456
Abstract: A borehole tool member has an elongated slot with a surrounding seal for engaging the wall of the borehole for sampling fluid from the subsurface formations. A passage extends from the slot through a portion of the tool member to an upper opening which is connected to a conduit that extends to the surface. The seal surrounding the slot is forced against the borehole wall by two pistons located in two cylindrical chambers formed into the tool member. The pistons are actuated for movement outward of the tool member by fluid under pressure injected from the surface by way of a pressure control line extending from the surface to a second passage formed in the tool member and which extends to the two cylindrical chambers. Springs are provided for returning the pistons inward upon release of the fluid pressure in the cylindrical chambers.

  • Patent number: 4454814
Abstract: The invention relates to improved systems and methods for selectively firing perforating guns in well bores and is concerned primarily with the production of a positive confirmation to the effect that each actuation at the operator control station intended to cause a firing of a particular shaped charge did or did not in fact result in the firing of that shaped charge. Such positive confirmation is accomplished by methods which involve the passage of measuring current from a constant current source through certain conductive loops to develop signals that are a function of the conductive loop resistance, the storage and comparison of said signals, and the display of resultant information. Due to certain phenomena, satisfactory measurement results will not be achieved unless a measuring current of substantial magnitude is used. The various parameters involved are treated.
