  • Patent number: 8312002
Abstract: A tracking system passively tracks and records searches conducted by actual search engine users. The recorded data for each search event preferably includes the search query submitted, the search engine used, the search result item (e.g., web page) selected, the position (e.g., page number) of this item, and the user's IP address. The collected data is aggregated and analyzed to generate data regarding the search queries used to locate and access particular destinations (e.g., web pages and sites). This data may be used for various purposes, such as (1) to generate reports showing, e.g., how users reach a particular destination from different search engines and geographic locations, (2) to select content to display on a destination page, such that the content is relevant to search queries commonly used to locate that page, and (3) to update the database of one search engine to reflect searches conducted on other search engines.

  • Patent number: 8312212
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to systems and methods for “attaching” a virtual hard drive to the physical computer hardware by implementing a specialized disk controller driver for the host operating system that is recognized by the host operating system as a disk controller driver but which in fact also emulates the virtual hard disk it is “attached” to. When the host operating system sends requests to read and write sectors from the virtual hard drive, the specialized driver (the “virtual hard drive controller driver”) directly accesses and manipulates the back-end file mentioned above. Thus the virtual disk is “attached” and recognizable by the host operating system and can be manipulated thereby (and applications executing thereon).

  • Patent number: 8312459
Abstract: A containment mechanism provides for the grouping and isolation of multiple processes running on a single computer using a single instance of the operating system. A system environment is divided into one or more side-by-side and/or nested spaces enabling the partitioning and controlled sharing of resources by creating different views of hierarchical name spaces via virtual hierarchies. A set of declarative rules specifying access capabilities may specify a set of filter drivers to be used to limit access to nodes in the hierarchical name space. The rules may be applied in sequence to construct a new name space from an existing one, or to add to an existing hierarchy. Filter drivers are used to limit access to nodes in the new name space or new portion of the name space. Access to nodes can be limited (read-only access instead of read/write) or nodes can be hidden altogether. Rules may be specified in a declarative language such as XML.

  • Patent number: 8307443
Abstract: The subject disclosure relates to systems and methods that secure anti-virus software through virtualization. Anti-virus systems can be maintained separate from user applications and operating system through virtualization. The user applications and operating system run in a guest virtual machine while anti-virus systems are isolated in a secure virtual machine. The virtual machines are partially interdependent such that the anti-virus systems can monitor user applications and operating systems while the anti-virus systems remain free from possible malicious attack originating from a user environment. Further, the anti-virus system is secured against zero-day attacks so that detection and recovery may occur post zero-day.

  • Patent number: 8306435
Abstract: A receiver for recovering transmitted information carried by a received optical signal that has been affected by dispersion includes an optical splitter having an input port arranged to receive the received optical signal, and a plurality of output ports. A proportion of optical power at the input port is transmitted to each of the output ports. A plurality of optical detectors is operably connected to respective output ports of the optical splitter, for generating a corresponding plurality of electrical signals. Optical phase shifters are disposed between the output ports of the optical splitter and respective optical detectors. As a result, each optical phase shifter applies a frequency dependent phase shift to an optical signal passing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 8306583
Abstract: A variable configuration apparatus has components or sub-systems. At least some components (200 and 201) have mechanical coupling elements (101 and 102 and 103) that enable the configuration of the apparatus to be varied by changing at least one of the relative orientation and position of those components or subsystems. These mechanical coupling elements (101 and 102 and 103) incorporate wireless signal coupling elements (205 and 206) that cooperate to provide a wireless coupling which enables wireless coupling between the components. The wireless coupling may be used to transfer at least one of data and power between the components. The wireless signal coupling elements may be capacitive coupling elements that provide capacitive coupling between the components or sub-systems. In an example, the apparatus is a video camera and one component or sub-system is a display screen (201) and another component or sub-system is the main body (200) of the video camera (200).

  • Patent number: 8307103
Abstract: Systems, methods and computer readable media are disclosed for reducing the tearing of display data received across a communications network. A server determines at least two logically related drawing orders in an order heap and warps those orders with a begin marker and an end marker. It sends those wrapped orders across the communications network to a client. The client receives those orders and renders them to a shadow buffer. When the client processes the end marker, it moves the drawing orders in the shadow buffer to a client display surface.
