  • Patent number: 6997358
Abstract: A device (2) for fitting to the neck of a deformable bottle (4) to give a metered dose of liquid when the bottle is squeezed. The liquid dispensed through outlet (30) has to pass through a metering chamber (34) in which it is directed around or through a freely-moving shuttle (8), movement of the shuttle (8) with the flow being resisted by the creation of a partial vacuum in the expanding control chamber (42) behind the shuttle, so that the rate at which the shuttle moves to the outlet end of the metering chamber (34) to close the outlet (30), and hence the amount of liquid dispensed, is controlled by the rate at which liquid can enter control chamber (42). Because it is configured so that all the liquid enters metering chamber (34) at its inward end, the chamber may fitted either inside or outside the neck of the bottle (4) and the dose may be adjusted by moving the outlet (30) closer to, or further from, the inlet.

  • Patent number: 6967714
Abstract: The matter for which the refractive index is to be determined, is made available in the form of a theoretically determinable scattering or diffraction pattern. Two or more orders of diffraction may then be defined to form at least one intensity ratio. At least one intensity distribution may be formed by irradiating the scattering pattern using one light beam of a defined shape. Subsequently thereto, the intensity ratio may be formed based on the orders of diffraction of the intensity distribution. In addition, at least one portion of a characteristic curve may be determined, which represents the dependency of the intensity ratio on the refractive index, and, with whose assistance, the corresponding refractive index can be assigned to the intensity ratio formed.

  • Patent number: 6926031
Abstract: A male coupling half includes a male valve and a male body and the female coupling half includes a female valve and an inner body. The inner body is slidingly movable with respect to a housing or manifold. The female coupling half further includes a valve seated against a dump valve body which relieves pressure in the female half of the coupling to enable easy connection of the coupling halves. The male and female valves are locked in their open positions when the coupling halves are fully connected and the female half is pressurized which prevents reverse flow checking in either flow direction. During the disconnection process the male valve is closed before the coupling halves are separated which traps pressure in the male coupling half.

  • Patent number: 6909104
Abstract: A miniaturized terahertz radiation source based on the Smith-Purcell effect is provided, in which, from a focused electron source, a high-energy bundle of electrons is transmitted at a defined distance over a reflection diffraction grating composed of transversely disposed grating rods, so that, in response to oscillating image charges, electromagnetic waves of one wavelength are emitted, the wavelength being adjustable as a function of the periodicity of the lines and of the electron velocity. The elements of the radiation source, such as field emitter (1), electrostatic lens (4), beam deflector (5), grating (7) of metal, and a second anode (8), are integrated on a semiconductor chip using additive nanolithographic methods. The field electron source is constructed to project, as a wire, out of the surface, using additive nanolithography, and is made of readily conductive material having stabilizing series resistance.

  • Patent number: 6860983
Abstract: A process and apparatus for recovering a metal from a feedstock containing a compound of the metal. The process includes an electrowinning step in which a leachate comprising a salt of the metal, dissolved in an aqueous acid solution, is subjected to electrowinning in an electrolytic cell, wherein elemental metal is deposited on the cathodes of the cell and oxygen is generated at the anodes. The oxygen generated at the anodes is collected and is then at least partially consumed in an oxygen-consuming step of the process. Preferably, the oxygen-consuming step comprises an atmospheric or pressure leaching step in which the metal compounds in the feedstock become dissolved in a leachate in the form of metal salts, preferably sulfates. The recovery and use of anode oxygen in a leaching process encourages the use of mist-reducing technology in existing and new electrowinning facilities.
