  • Patent number: 6486994
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for wirelessly communicating between a master and slave device with multi-directional infrared transmissions are provided. The master device is equipped with a multi-directional infrared (IR) port in the form of either a PCMCIA communications card, an infrared domed housing or a plurality of IR ports, positioned multi-directionally, about a computing system configuration. The IR port has a plurality of IR pairs, infrared isolated therebetween, comprised of an infrared transmitter and receiver. From the master device, each of the IR transmitters transmit an attention pulse in a wide-angular pattern in a singular plane to attract the attention of the slave device regardless of its physical placement in relation to the master device. In response to the attention pulse, the slave device sends a reply. Thereafter, the reply is evaluated at each of the IR pairs according to various criteria to select the IR pair or pairs best suited for infrared communications with the slave device.

  • Patent number: 6482735
Abstract: A recess having a height-to-width aspect ratio from about 6:1 to about 10:1 in a semiconductor structure is taught with a method of forming the same. In a first embodiment, a refractory metal layer is formed in the recess, which can be a trench, a contact hole, or a combination thereof. A refractory metal nitride layer is then formed on the refractory metal layer. A heat treatment, preferably RTP, is used to form a metal silicide contact at the bottom of the contact hole upon semiconductor material. In a first alternative method, an ammonia high-temperature treatment is conducted to remove undesirable impurities within the refractory metal nitride layer lining the contact hole and to replace the impurities with more nitrogen. In a second alternative method, a second refractory metal nitride layer is formed by PVD upon the first refractory metal nitride layer. In either alternative, metallization layer is deposited with the recess.

  • Patent number: 6479875
Abstract: The present invention relates to the formation of multiple gettering structures within a semiconductive substrate by ion implantation through recesses in the semiconductive substrate. A preferred embodiment of the present invention includes forming the recesses by using a reactive anisotropic etching medium, followed by implanting a gettering material. The gettering material is implanted by changing the gettering material for the reactive anisotropic etching medium. An advantage of the method of the present invention is that gettering structures are formed without the cost of an extra masking procedure and without the expense of MeV implantation equipment and procedures. As a result, metallic contaminants will not move as freely through the semiconductive substrate in the region of an active area proximal to the gettering structures.

  • Patent number: 6480571
Abstract: An anode drive assembly for use in an x-ray tube having a rotating anode is disclosed. The anode drive assembly is comprised of a bearing assembly that provides rotational support to a rotor assembly. The rotor assembly is connected to the rotating anode, and rotation is induced in the rotor by way of an inductive motor. The bearing assembly is interconnected with the rotor assembly via a bearing hub. The bearing hub is comprised of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) that is intermediate to that of the components connected directly to the anode, and to the bearing shaft component. This provides a gradual transition in CTE along the conductive path between the anode and the bearing shaft so as to reduce the occurrence of thermal expansion rate disparities between adjacent components.

  • Patent number: 6480851
Abstract: A computer system data container such as a directory or data folder includes various items (e.g., e-mail messages) having item level security controls. In this invention, the computer system ignores files for which the viewer has no viewing rights when summary data about the data container is displayed on the viewer's monitor. For each item level security setting, a running total is kept of an aggregate property (e.g., count of, size of) of all the items in the directory or folder of that security setting. Changes to the running total occur as items are added or deleted, or edited if the aggregate property is the size of all items of that security setting. Regardless of what the aggregated data is, the computer system adds only the running totals for which the user has viewing rights when computing summary data. Thus, the user cannot infer anything about non-viewable items from the summary data.

  • Patent number: 6476435
Abstract: Methods for fabricating low leakage trenches for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) cells and the devices formed thereby are disclosed. In one embodiment of the present invention, the method includes etching a container cell in an isolation film that is disposed within a trench. The container cell forms a vertical interface with the semiconductor substrate on one side through the isolation film. Formation of the container cell is self-aligning wherein previously-formed gate stacks act as etch stops for the container cell etch. In this way the container cell size is dependent for proper etch alignment only upon proper previous alignment and spacing of the gate stacks. The method of forming the container cell within an isolation film that is within a trench in the semiconductor substrate prevents cell-bit line shorting where the cell and the bit line are not horizontally adjacent to each other.
