    Abstract: An electron beam-curable resist composition suitable for fine patterning works in the manufacturing process of semiconductor devices is proposed which is outstandingly stable in storage and capable of being developed using an aqueous alkaline developer solution without scums and giving a patterned resist layer with high contrast and orthogonal cross sectional profile of a line pattern. The composition comprises (A) a triazine compound, such as 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4,6-bis(trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine, (B) a cresol novolac resin, of which at least 30% by weight of the phenolic moiety is derived from m-cresol, and (C) an alkoxymethylated melamine resin in specified proportions of (B):(C) and (A):[(B)+(C)]. The sensitivity of the resist composition is greatly enhanced by a heat treatment of the resist layer at 90.degree.-140.degree. C. after patternwise irradiation with electron beams.

    Abstract: The invention provides a novel compound which is a bis(4-alkyl-substituted piperazinylalkyl) ether such as bis[2-(4-methylpiperazinyl)ethyl] ether and bis[2-(4-ethylpiperazinyl)ethyl] ether. The compound, which can be prepared by the dehydrochlorination reaction between a 1-alkyl-substituted piperazine and a bis(chloroalkyl) ether, is useful as a catalyst for the urethane-forming reaction between a polyisocyanate compound and a polyol compound to give an advantage that a sufficiently long mixing time is available to ensure full uniformity of the reaction mixture before substantial proceeding of the reaction.

    Abstract: A vinyl chloride-based polymeric resin having outstandingly high thermal stability is obtained by the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer, optionally, in combination with a comonomer in an aqueous polymerization medium to which a specific di- or tetraglycidyl compound such as diglycidyl hexadhydroisophthalate and 1,3-bis(N,N-diglycidylaminomethyl) cyclohexane is added. The improvement obtained by this method is so remarkable that substantial improvements can be obtained in the thermal stability of the resin even when vinyl chloride is copolymerized with a comonomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated linkages in a molecule, e.g., diallyl phthalate and 1,6-hexane diol diacrylate, with an object to obtain a resin from which shaped resin articles having mattness in appearance can be prepared.

    Abstract: A curable organopolysiloxane composition, which is suitable for making a silicone rubber mold for mock-up molding with, for example, an epoxy resin, is prepared by the steps of (a) blending an organopolysiloxane having at least two silanol groups in a molecule, a finely divided silica filler having hydrophobic surface and hexamethyl disilazane to give a uniform mixture in a specified proportion; (b) subjecting the uniform mixture to a heat treatment; and (c) blending the heat-treated uniform mixture with an organosilane compound having at least three hydrolyzable groups in a molecule or a partial hydrolysis product thereof as a crosslinking agent. The composition has good flowability suitable for the preparation of a mold of any exquisite forms and the silicone rubber mold prepared from the composition exhibits good mold-releasability lastingly.

    Abstract: A method is proposed for the preparation of pitch-based carbon fibers having excellent mechanical properties or , in particular, a surprisingly high knot strength much higher than that of PAN-based carbon fibers. The method comprises the steps of melt-spinning of starting pitch material, infusibilization of the pitch fibers by oxidation and carbonization of the infusibilized pitch fibers in an inert atmosphere. The improvement of the inventive method consists in the infusibilization treatment of pitch fibers under controlled conditions so as to effect preferential oxidation of the surface layer to such an extent that the value m=(O.sub.1s /C.sub.1s)/(O/C) is at least 2, in which O.sub.1S /C.sub.1S is the molar ratio of the oxygen content to the carbon content in the surface layer as determined by the ESCA method and O/C is the molar ratio or the oxygen content to the carbon content for the infusibilized pitch fiber as a whole.

    Abstract: The invention provides an efficient method for the preparation of a plastic-made computer-operating card having an emboss-worked relief pattern on the surface by adhesively bonding an emboss-worked plastic-made covering sheet to a body of the card. In the inventive method, a sheet for covering is lined with a second sheet on the back surface and the laminate is emboss-worked so that the debris of the second sheet fills up the cavity formed behind the relief pattern in the first sheet followed by peeling off the undeformed portion of the second sheet leaving the debris filling the cavity. Since the cavity behind the emboss-worked relief pattern is filled up with the debris of the second sheet, the emboss-worked covering sheet is safe from the troubles of collapsing or flattening in the subsequent step of adhesive bonding thereof to the body of the card.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for separating hydrophobic materials in liquid state from an aqueous liquid or hydrophilic liquid, for separating debris from such liquid, or for purifying hydrophobic materials in liquid state are disclosed. An improved strainer for such apparatus and method is also disclosed. The apparatus and method employ at least one rotatable disk to which hydrophobic materials are attracted and retained; scraper blades to scrape the hydrophobic materials from the disk into a discharge tube from which said materials flow to a pump situated in the apparatus. The pump pumps the materials out of the apparatus. The pump is preferably driven by the same motor which rotates the disk. The strainer has an upper mesh portion and a lower portion where the walls and bottom are solid. The strainer also has an internal diverter plate. Influent containing debris strikes the plate and debris settles in the strainer and is retained in the non-mesh portion thereof.
