Abstract: A system and method for the operant conditioning of subjects using biofeedback includes means to measure a variable condition, such as posture, which is controllable by the subject. The apparatus sets criteria which, if not met, may result in a negative reinforcement, such as unpleasant audio tone or, if the criteria is met, will reward the subject. The criteria is automatically adjusted, upwards or downwards, in accordance with the subject's history of reaching, or not reaching, the criteria. One embodiment is a device for the training of patients with idiopathic scoliosis (curvature of the spine), as a replacement for a brace. The device includes two cables, one about the chest to measure breathing and the other longitudinally about the trunk to measure spine length. The variable lengths of the cables are converted to digital signals by rotary-to-digital converters.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for the preparation of a calcium carbonate powder of which the particles have a platelet-like particulate configuration and which is useful as a pigment or filler in various products with superiority to kaolin clays and mica powders. The method is a two-step carbonation method of a milk of lime of which the first step is performed by blowing carbon dioxide into the milk of lime until 10 to 70% of the calcium hydroxide is carbonated and the second step is performed by admixing the thus partially carbonated milk of lime with an aqueous carbonating solution containing an alkali metal carbonate or ammonium carbonate and an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide in specified concentrations to complete the carbonation of the calcium hydroxide.

Abstract: A finely divided metal-containing compound can be efficiently prepared by irradiating a mixed vapor phase of an organometallic compound in a concentration to exceed a specified lower limit and a reactant gaseous compound with laser beams having an incident energy density to exceed a specified lower limit. When the reactant gaseous compound in the vapor phase is an oxygen-containing compound, e.g., air, the resultant powdery product is an oxide of the metallic element of the organometallic compound. When the reactant gaseous compound in the vapor phase is a halogen-containing compound, e.g., methyl halides, the resultant powdery product is a halide of the metallic element of the organometallic compound.
Abstract: A novel morpholino-substituted tertiary amine compound is proposed which is tris[2-(4-morpholino)ethyl] amine or a derivative thereof by optionally substituting methyl and/or ethyl groups for a part or all of the hydrogen atoms at the 2- and 6-positions of the morpholine rings. The amine compound can be synthesized by heating tris[N,N-di(2-hydroxyethyl)aminoethyl] amine or a corresponding derivative thereof in a mixture with sulfuric acid. The amine compound is useful as a catalyst for the urethane-forming reaction between a polyisocyanate compound and a polyol compound without the problems of environmental pollution or unpleasant odor as in the use of methyl or ethyl morpholine for the same purpose.
Abstract: A credit card imprinter has a flat imprinter base on which a merchant plate, a credit card and a form set are positioned. A hand operated carriage is pulled back-and-forth over the form set and imprints the merchant plate, in one direction, and the credit card, in the opposite direction, on the form set. The carriage contains two independent platen rollers each rotatably mounted on a separate axle. The axles and their rollers are urged upwards by springs and are automatically shifted from an upward idle position to a downward print position by a unitary one-piece plastic slider. The slider has four outwardly extending arm portions which act on the axles to shift their heights.

Abstract: A rubber composition based on a rubbery polymer and a silica-based reinforcing filler can be imparted with a greatly improved workability in roll milling and molding as well as in the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates prepared therefrom when the rubber composition is admixed with an acetylene alcohol or an alkylene-oxide adduct of acetylene alcohol presumably by virtue of the improvement in the dispersibility of the reinforcing filler in the rubbery matrix. The improvement obtained by the addition of the acetylene alcohol compound is not limited to the dispersibility of silica fillers but also to the dispersibility of carbon black when the rubbery polymer is an organopolysiloxane-modified acrylic polymer.
