  • Patent number: 6900594
Abstract: A method and device for automatically switching on and/or off the illumination of a vehicle. Faulty switching is reduced by adapting the threshold value for switching on the illumination by averaging the measured brightness value(s) according to the driving speed and using switching-off conditions which, inter alia, consider the surrounding brightness.

  • Patent number: 6899225
Abstract: A divider for use in handling quantities of yarn spools arranged in layers. The divider includes a main body generally planar polygonal portion and a skirt portion extending around the periphery of the main body portion and formed into a series of circumferentially spaced, arcuate, inwardly opening scallops with each scallop having a curvature substantially matching the curvature of the yarn spools so that, with a layer of spools positioned on the main body portion and the skirt upstanding from the main body portion, each scallop may compliantly engage the outer periphery of an individual outer spool of the spool layer. Each scallop is connected to the main body portion by a strap extending from the main body portion to the scallop and the scallops are connected together to form a continuous circumferential band.

  • Patent number: 6901160
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for evaluating the surfaces of substrates for three dimensional defects. The present invention uses low-angled lighting positioned on opposite sides of the substrate. A camera positioned above the substrate captures two images thereof, one using the first light source and one using the second. The first and second images are subtracted from one another to create a third image. Camera data suggestive of three dimensional features is emphasized by subtracting the two images and can be evaluated. A fourth image may be created by selecting the minimum values between the first and second images on a point-by-point basis. The fourth image also provides useful information in evaluating three dimensional defects.

  • Patent number: 6895854
Abstract: The present invention relates to a power cylinder apparatus for varying actuation forces applied to a workpiece. The present invention provides an enclosure having a piston rod connectable to a workpiece and slidably disposed within an enclosure. The piston rod moves between a retracted position, wherein the piston rod is retracted within the enclosure, and an extended position, wherein the piston rod extends outwardly from the enclosure. A piston is slidably disposed on the piston rod for movement between the retracted position and the extended position. A bushing is provided within the enclosure for slidably supporting the piston rod and positively stopping the piston in the extended position. The piston rod and piston have varying surface areas substantially perpendicular to the direction of movement such that varying actuation forces may be provided to the workpiece through a supply of a constant fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 6896014
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing transmission fluid from the transmission fluid reservoir of a vehicle and the associated fluid cooler with an optional transmission fluid replacement includes a quick connect valve located in the transmission fluid recirculation system positioned upstream from the fluid cooler for selective connection to a source of pressurized air and a source of fresh transmission fluid. The quick connect valve restricts the flow of the pressurized gas and fresh transmission fluid in only one direction to direct the flow of pressurized gas and fresh transmission fluid through the fluid cooler and then to the transmission reservoir. A quick connect valve may be also located in a drain plug of the transmission reservoir for communication to a waste receptacle during the removal of the waste transmission fluid.

  • Patent number: 6896005
Abstract: An elongated multi-layer tubing is disclosed for connection to a motor vehicle system to handle fluids containing hydrocarbons. The tubing includes a first layer disposed radially innermost and having an inner surface capable of prolonged exposure to a fluid containing hydrocarbons and an outer surface spaced a first predetermined radial thickness from the inner surface, the first layer consisting essentially of an extrudable, melt-processible thermoplastic. The tubing also includes a second layer having a second predetermined radial thickness at most equal to the thickness of the first layer. The second layer is uniformly and homogeneously connected to or bonded to the first layer and consists essentially of an extrudable, melt-processible thermoplastic capable of sufficiently permanent laminar adhesion with the first layer to prevent delamination during a desired lifetime of the tubing. At least one of the first and second layers is resistant to permeation by hydrocarbons.

  • Patent number: 6889860
Abstract: A plastic drink-through lid of the type having a deck, a peripheral skirt, and a partially separable, preformed tab in the deck to form a drink-through hold which does not extend through the peripheral skirt. The tab has an upstanding thumb catch preformed thereon. The fold back hinge is formed in the deck immediately adjacent the tab and spaced less than about one-half of the lid radius from the periphery. This creates a very short throw which allows a user to open the tab and lock it back with the thumb of the same hand that is holding the cup.

  • Patent number: 6889005
Abstract: A fluid heater apparatus supplies heat to wash fluid via a flow path in a thermally conductive body. A heat source is disposed in the thermally conductive body for imparting heat to the body. Fluid in a flow path in the thermal body enveloping the heat source absorbs heat from the body. A fluid expansion member is fixed to the mass over the open ends of the fluid flow path in the thermal body. The fluid expansion member is formed of a compressible foam material having shape memory. The fluid expansion member is sealingly joinable by fasteners to the thermal body through bores formed in the peripheral edge of the member.

  • Patent number: 6886837
Abstract: A hydraulic suspension strut (30) has a first on-off valve (58) connecting the first and second chambers (42 and 44), and a second on-off valve (62) connected to chamber (42) only. Suspension arm (3) of wheel (1) can be retracted beyond normal road travel, or protracted to road travel mode, by use of pump (9) and valves (58 and 62). The space in the strut above port (56) may be used as a hydraulic bump stop. An accumulator (50) may be included, as a hydraulic spring. Alternatively, strut (70) (FIG. 6; note alternative accumulator position) allows suspension to be raised above normal road travel. Strut (100) (FIG. 8) may be operated in roadgoing, raised, or retracted mode. These struts may be applied to reconfigurable suspensions; particularly for amphibious vehicles, which may require wheels to be withdrawn above the hull water line to reduce drag on water, particularly during cornering.

  • Patent number: 6886710
Abstract: A multi-purpose tray including a front, a back, a first side, a second side, and a bottom. The tray can include beams extending from the front of the tray and slots defined in the back of the tray. When two trays are stacked in opposite directions with respect to one another, the beams are received by the slots. The tray also includes a domed bottom. The domed bottom has a convex profile with respect to the interior of the tray and can include transverse ribs or longitudinal ribs. The tray also includes drain apertures positioned along the front and back of the tray. The drain apertures can enhance cleaning of the tray by communicating fluid from channels defined by the front and back. The tray also includes a stop for projection for limiting sliding movement of a top tray relative to a bottom tray when two trays are stacked in a similar orientation with respect to one another. The tray also includes handles in the first and second side and a gripping portion on one of the first and second handles.
