  • Patent number: 5811664
Abstract: A sensor for use in machine wear debris monitoring transducers which detect metallic particles present in a flow of fluid, such as lubricating oil. The sensor comprises an inductive coil having a plurality of turns for surrounding a non-magnetic conduit. An electrically conducting screen is located between the coil and the flow of fluid, the coil being electrically insulated from the screen, so as to isolate capacitatively the contents of the conduit from the coil. The resonant frequency of a tank circuit incorporating the sensor is thus unaffected by changes in the dielectric properties of the contents of the conduit caused by air bubbles and/or water droplets in the flow of fluid. The screen may be a single turn of thin metal foil having a gap between adjacent ends, or a mesh, or a metallic coating sprayed onto the conduit.

In general the PCD compact is provided with a blind bore in the substrate layer, the bore terminating in the substrate layer and opening onto an outer face of the substrate layer intended to engage or abut the tool or support surface. A mechanical fastener is inserted into the blind bore such that it is secured to the PCD compact to form an integral unit with a tool-engaging end of the fastener protruding from the compact. In a preferred form the mechanical fastener is a metal post having at least one, and alternately both, ends threaded for threaded engagement to both the blind bore (which would have its own threads) and suitable threaded openings on the tool.

  • Patent number: 5810571
Abstract: An oil pump for high performance internal combustion engines suitable for use with race cars and the like wherein extended wear and tolerance maintenance is achieved by supporting the pump gears on shafts extending through the gears. Balanced dual support of the pump gears is achieved by forming bearing openings in the pump lower housing receiving the lower gear shaft portions and lubrication of the lower housing supported gear shafts is achieved by oil passages communicating with the bearings and the lower housing oil outlet cavity. Screw in plugs and retainers are employed to insure effective assembly even under high vibration, and a bolt-on screened oil inlet achieves superior rigidity and ease of replacement.

  • Patent number: 5806228
Abstract: An improved scope mounting base for securing a scope to the carrying handle of M-16 type rifles without interfering with the sight tunnel formed through the top of the carrying handle. In a preferred form the scope mounting base comprises a readily detachable, elongated body having a generally U-shaped interior handle-engaging contour which mates securely to the undersigned exterior surfaces of the carrying handle, and exterior scope-mounting surfaces located along the exterior side surfaces of the carrying handle. This arrangement leaves the sight tunnel through the top of the carrying handle unobstructed, and allows the detachable base to remain on the rifle when the scope is removed while still permitting the unimpaired use of the iron sights. In an alternate embodiment the exterior scope-mounting surfaces, preferably in the form of dovetail-type rails such as Weaver or NATO Stanag, are formed integrally into the exterior side surfaces of the carrying handle.

  • Patent number: 5804961
Abstract: A magnetostrictive waveguide position measuring apparatus includes a waveguide extending between opposed anchored ends. A magnet is displaceable along the waveguide and generates torsional strain in the waveguide in response to an electrical excitation signal transmitted along the waveguide. A piezoelectric film element is coupled to the waveguide to sense the torsional strain signal on the waveguide. A signal processor determines the relative elapsed time between the excitation signal and the output signal of the piezoelectric film element to determine the position of the magnet along the waveguide. The piezoelectric film element is coupled to the waveguide along an axis transverse to the axis of stretch of the element. Alternately, a differential piezoelectric film element formed of two piezoelectric elements contacts a waveguide, with the two elements connected in differential parallel or series configuration and in or out of phase to double the output current or the output voltage.

  • Patent number: 5803111
Abstract: An apparatus for purging a water supply line during winter weather conditions using pressurized air includes an air tank capable of holding a sufficient supply of pressurized air to purge the supply line. A valve is connected to an air port of the tank and has a valve member movable between open and closed positions to control the flow of air into and out of the air tank. There is an air bleeder mechanism having an air inlet connectible to the supply line and an air outlet. The mechanism permits air, but not water, to pass from the supply line to the air tank and also permits air to flow back through the mechanism into the supply line. A manually operated valve is used to permit atmospheric air to flow through the air bleeder mechanism to the supply line.
