  • Patent number: 5442599
Abstract: A master secondary clock system of the analog impulse type consisting of separate motor driven secondary clocks and a master control unit. The secondary clocks can be set at any time by an appropriate signal from the master clock so that even widely scattered secondary clocks can be brought at any time to the correct time. In one disclosed embodiment, the secondary clocks are moved by a series of rapid pulses form the master clock to a predetermined known time, the secondary clocks are brought into registry, the master clock calculates the time disparity between the registration time and the real time, and the secondary clocks are moved in unison to the real time.

  • Patent number: 5442677
Abstract: A light weight battery powered x-ray source capable of producing high intensity x-ray emissions with low power consumption. A modular construction locates all high voltage components including the x-ray tube, spark gap trigger, spiral capacitor and the secondary of a step-up transformer in a sealed canister which can be decoupled both mechanically and electrically by unscrewing a simple threaded coupling. A center module contains the primary of the step-up transformer, circuit boards for electronic components and a pulse counter/selector. A battery pack with rechargeable Nicad batteries is removably connectable to the center module. High intensity pulses are achieved in part by connecting the spiral capacitor at midlength to the spark gap trigger. An improved x-ray tube with light weight but effective lead shielding and an overall length of less than two inches is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5439428
Abstract: An automatic clutch controller for a vehicle that reduces the oscillatory response to clutch engagement. The automatic clutch controller receives inputs from an engine speed sensor and a transmission input speed sensor and develops a clutch actuation signal controlling a clutch actuator from disengaged to fully engaged. The clutch engagement signal at least partially engages the friction clutch in a manner to cause the measured transmission input speed to asymptotically approach engine speed employing an approximate inverse model of this oscillatory response. The automatic clutch controller preferably includes a PID function and a differential engine speed function, which together adaptively adjust clutch engagement corresponding to vehicle loading.

  • Patent number: 5439759
Abstract: A hinged, shell-like protective cover is releasably mounted to a flanged, split-ring battery cable terminal. A method of assembling said cover to said battery cable terminal is also described. The cover surrounds the battery cable terminal, providing protection from dirt, water, salt, and other contaminants in the engine compartment of a vehicle. The cover includes a base having an aperture which is adapted to receive a battery post. The base is attached to a lid by an integrally molded hinge which allows the lid to pivot about the base between an open position and a closed position. A locking mechanism is provided to secure the lid to the base in the closed position. A pair of resilient locking arms are formed on the base and are adapted to receive a terminal bolt. A plurality of resilient tabs are formed on the base of the cover and located near the aperture in the base. The resilient tabs interact with a flange on the terminal to secure the terminal to the base.

  • Patent number: 5429085
Abstract: A rotary internal combustion engine including a housing and two vanes mounted on concentric shafts for independent rotation in one direction within the housing in response to combustion within the housing. The engine further includes a ratchet assembly, including a ratchet housing associated with the concentric shafts to prevent rotation of the vanes within the housing in the opposite direction, and a converter assembly operative to convert the movement of the vanes into unidirectional rotation of an output shaft. In order to ensure steady state operation and provide control over the combustion ratio of the engine, a timing mechanism is provided to sense the relative position of the vanes at any given point in the engine cycle and rotate the vanes relative to the housing independently of the combustion induced rotation of the vanes within the housing.

  • Patent number: 5421827
Abstract: An incontinence device comprising a generally tubular soft latex shape (20) open at both ends. The upper end (24) is smoothly curved and tapered inward (28) to the opening (26) with the latex of minimal thickness and coated on the outside adjacent the opening (26) with a suitable adhesive for contact with the skin about the anal opening. The lower end (22) is partially folded and clipped to permit the device to be affixed with an applicator (30) specifically shaped (32) for the purpose and inserted within the device. The shape and material of the device permits the device to fully stretch and shrink with the anal opening while remaining adhesively affixed to the skin. An extended polyvinyl chloride/urethane mixture of similar elasticity, flexibility and elongation may be substituted for the latex. Because of the very thin wall thickness, the device may be formed as a fiat hollow body (120) which expands in use.

  • Patent number: 5419514
Abstract: In a vertical take-off and landing vehicle, the invention is a method for improving stability by virtue of establishing conversion of thrust vectors over the center of gravity of the vehicle while in the hover position. Through the use of selected angles of inclination of the thrust-generating devices, a positive static stability of the aircraft is maintained. In addition, the spars supporting the thrust-generating devices are mounted in a fixed angular relationship to the centerline of the aircraft's fuselage, to achieve the desired inclination of the thrust vectors of the lift-generating devices toward the centerline of the vehicle, by simple rotation of the spars on which the lift-generating devices are mounted.

  • Patent number: 5417240
Abstract: A head valve for maintaining a desired pressure head in a vehicle fuel tank which responds automatically to pressure changes in the filler pipe corresponding to a change from normal vehicle operation to a refueling operation to adjust the pressure head maintained by the head valve. In a vehicle fuel system including a filler pipe selectively opened and closed by a cap, the valve of the present invention responds to pressure changes near the filler pipe inlet upon removal of the cap to increase the pressure head it maintains in fuel tank 10 and prevent the fuel tank from being overfilled. When the refueling operation is completed and the cap is replaced, the change in pressure near the filler pipe inlet operates the valve to decrease its head valve closing force and reduce the pressure head maintained in the tank for normal vehicle operation.
