  • Patent number: 4479093
Abstract: An amplifier (10) is disclosed including circuity for improving the amplifiers performance, particularly the common mode rejection of differential amplifiers, by adding the amplifier input signal to the power supply signals which power the amplifier. Voltage dividers (42, 44) are connected between the amplifier output (16) and each of the two power supply rails (26, 28). Each divider includes resistors (46, 48; 50, 52) selected so that the amplifier output is divided down by a factor equal to the gain of the amplifier. The junction signals (V.sub.J1, V.sub.J2) provided by the two voltage dividers thus each includes a component equal to the input signal. The junction voltages are applied to the amplifier power input terminals (18, 20) by respective transistors (60, 62), each connected in a voltage follower arrangement. One embodiment (FIG. 4) incorporates a servo amplifier (100) for DC offset stabilization.

  • Patent number: 4476074
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for forming cast-in-place structures includes the use of a sheet of fabric having a plurality of pockets for receiving support rods. The pockets are formed between an inner side surface of the sheet of fabric and a plurality of strands of material. The support rods are used to hold the fabric in place while a slurry of a cementitious material is poured into a cavity between the sheet of fabric and a base. The cementitious slurry flows between the strands of material into the support rod receiving pockets. The resulting concrete structure extends around the support rods to prevent them from being exposed to the environment. The strands of material are advantageously connected with the sheet of fabric by interweaving them with the threads of the fabric.

  • Patent number: 4475440
Abstract: An improved power steering control apparatus includes a power steering motor having a piston rod which extends through one end of the motor cylinder. This results in the rod end of the piston having a smaller working area than the head end of the piston. In order to equalize the fluid pressure forces on opposite sides of the piston when the motor is in an inactive condition, a power steering control valve vents both sides of the piston to atmospheric pressure when the control valve is in a neutral or unactuated condition.

  • Patent number: 4472866
Abstract: An improved method of making an airfoil includes stacking plies in two groups. A separator ply is positioned between the two groups of plies. The groups of plies and the separator ply are interconnected to form an airfoil blank. The airfoil blank is shaped, by forging or other methods, to have a desired configuration. The material of the separator ply is then dissolved or otherwise removed from between the two sections of the airfoil blank to provide access to the interior of the airfoil blank. Material is removed from inner sides of the two separated sections to form core receiving cavities. After cores have been placed in the cavities, the two sections of the airfoil blank are interconnected and the shaping of the airfoil is completed. The cores are subsequently removed from the completed airfoil.

  • Patent number: 4470010
Abstract: Retrofit apparatus (38) for attachment to a utility meter (10) to detect revolutions of a dial arm (34) of the utility meter. A piezoelectric crystal (42) is provided against which a striker arm (52) abuts. The striker arm is rotatable on an axle (50) and is therefore movable relative to the piezoelectric crystal. A spring (54) is tensioned so as to resiliently bias the striker arm against the crystal. A shoe (62) is also mounted on the axle and is disposed in the path of rotation of the dial arm so that once each revolution the dial arm engages, deflects, and releases the shoe, thereby causing the striker arm to withdraw from and then snap back against the piezoelectric crystal. The crystal produces an electrical pulse in response. The pulses are counted by a counter (82) to provide a count indicative of utility usage.

  • Patent number: 4465093
Abstract: A fluid fuse operable to shut off fluid flow upon rupture of fluid conducting line downstream of the fuse. The fuse is actuated by two forces generated by pressure differential caused by sudden decompression of the fluid and developed across two variable, sharp edge, viscosity insensitive orifices, positioned in series and separated by a flow cut-off and sealing surface. The closing force, generated by the pressure differential of the upstream orifice is dominant and increases with the displacement of the closing member in a predetermined manner, permitting the use of a high preload and high rate opposing spring, at relatively low pressure differentials. The sealing surface of the fuse is provided with limited freedom of alignment to permit tight sealing. The fuse assembly includes a manually adjustable bypass arrangement and a pressure peak attenuating control.

  • Patent number: 4464094
Abstract: The present invention provides a new and improved method of making an improved turbine engine component having an annular array of airfoils connected wth inner and outer shrouds. The airfoils are cast separately from the shrouds to enable the airfoils and shrouds to be made from either the same or different materials. The airfoils advantageously have an elongated columnar grain structure with grain boundaries extending parallel to the leading and trailing edges of the airfoils. The inner and outer shrouds are formed of a plurality of arcuate sections which also may have an elongated columnar grain structure. The ends of the arcuate shroud sections are interconnected in such an orientation that the grain boundaries extend circumferentially around the circular shrouds to minimize the extent to which ends of the grains are exposed. In another embodiment of the invention, each of the arcuate shroud sections is formed of a single crystal.

  • Patent number: 4463354
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for communicating utility usage information from a utility usage location to a portable utility usage registering device (22). A utility usage detection circuit (10) is provided at the utility usage location. The circuit is connectable to a conventional utility meter (12), e.g., a natural gas meter, and provides an electrical signal indicative of utility usage. This signal is applied across a first inductive coil (23), which is mounted at the utility usage location such that the resulting magnetic field is accessible. A matching coil (36) is associated with the portable utility usage registering device and is housed such that it may be positioned within the magnetic field produced by the first inductive coil. When thus positioned the electrical signal produced by the circuit (10) is induced in the matching coil as a result of mutual inductance between the two coils.

  • Patent number: 4460872
Abstract: A low noise amplifier circuit (FIGS. 4 and 5) is disclosed including plural differential amplifiers having their inputs and outputs connected to common input and output lines (50, 52; 54, 56). In the disclosure, each differential amplifier is comprised of a pair of bipolar junction transistors (40, 42; 58, 60; 64, 66) of the same type. Parallel connecting of the differential amplifiers in the disclosed fashion reduces the Johnson noise introduced by the base spreading resistances of the individual transistors. Since differential amplifiers, per se, are connected in parallel rather than their component transistors, thermal runaway is not a problem.
