Patent number: 8661449Abstract: Computations are performed on shared datasets in a distributed computing cluster using aggressive speculation and a distributed runtime that executes code transactionally. Speculative transactions are conducted with currently available data on the assumption that no dependencies exist that will render the input data invalid. For those specific instances where this assumption is found to be incorrect—that the input data did indeed have a dependency (thereby impacting the correctness of the speculated transaction)—the speculated transaction is aborted and its results (and all transactions that relied on its results) are rolled-back accordingly for re-computation using updated input data. In operation, shared state data is read and written using only the system's data access API which ensures that computations can be rolled-back when conflicts stemming from later-determined dependencies are detected.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2011Date of Patent: February 25, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Christopher J. Patent number: 8660122Abstract: A communication technique facilitates transmission of low rate traffic over communication nodes. The nodes may be, for example, MoCA nodes. The communication happens while keeping the nodes in ultra low power mode. Accordingly, the technique increases the communication capabilities and coverage of networked nodes without impacting the overall power consumption budget. In one implementation, the technique includes encapsulating a datagram into a datagram information element, appending the datagram information element to a discovery request message, and sending the discovery request message to a network controller. The network controller extracts the datagram information element and forwards it (e.g., by broadcasting) to ultra low powered nodes, for example in an admission control frame.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2012Date of Patent: February 25, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Philippe Klein, Eyal Abrahamov

Publication number: 20140052936Abstract: Techniques for handling queuing of memory accesses prevent passing excessive requests that implicate a region of memory subject to a high latency memory operation, such as a memory refresh operation, memory scrubbing or an internal bus calibration event, to a re-order queue of a memory controller. The memory controller includes a queue for storing pending memory access requests, a re-order queue for receiving the requests, and a control logic implementing a queue controller that determines if there is a collision between a received request and an ongoing high-latency memory operation. If there is a collision, then transfer of the request to the re-order queue may be rejected outright, or a count of existing queued operations that collide with the high latency operation may be used to determine if queuing the new request will exceed a threshold number of such operations.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 22, 2013Publication date: February 20, 2014Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Mark A.
