Abstract: Extending the function of a conventional VCR to both do digital recording and to convert analog tape VCR cassette recordings to a digital format without any apparatus modification of the conventional VCR. A portable video recording device comprises a video cassette housing adapted to operatively engage a video cassette recorder, i.e. the VCR requires no modification; the VCR in effect thinks that it is receiving a conventional VCR cassette. The inserted cassette housing comprises a set of read-write heads for operatively engaging an opposing set of read-write heads in said video cassette recorder; disk-drive storage apparatus operatively connected to said cassette read-write heads; and apparatus for controlling said disk-drive storage apparatus to play and record video data through said video cassette recorder.

Abstract: A model for authentication and authorization of users and applications that use network services. A client requests a ticket by providing credentials (user ID and password), e.g., over HTTP/SOAP/XML in the UDDI framework. An authentication adapter in a receiving server deserializes the request into a data structure that provides access to the security ID and password attributes, and passes these attributes to an ID management system to perform authentication. The credentials also determine the user's or application's privileges. The authentication adapter constructs a ticket object for the client incorporating the privileges and other information, e.g., the security ID and a date/time stamp. The ticket object is serialized, encrypted, encoded for transmission and inserted into an appropriately-formatted XML message and returned to the requesting client. The client attaches the authentication ticket to subsequent service requests that require authentication.
Abstract: Multicolor image, formed from at least two component images, are printed on non-planar surfaces of edible pieces by maintaining registration of the pieces from one printing station to another. The registration is maintained by firmly securing the pieces to the transporting surface by applying a pressure differential, by a combination of a pressure differential with a resilient surface, or by trapping the pieces between a retaining member and a recess portion.

Abstract: A guide ring removal device. The guide ring removal device includes a column press, a first disc, a second disc, and a plurality of fasteners. The first disc is disposed on the column press. The second disc is disposed on a point of the column press to exert force on a carrier. The plurality of fasteners is disposed on the first disc, the fasteners grasping the guide ring. As the second disc exerts the primary force on the carrier, the fasteners generate reciprocal force on the guide ring, thus separating the guide ring. Engagement of the column press alters the distance between the first disc and the second disc, and the primary force is exerted on the carrier.
Abstract: When thermally perforating a thermoplastic resin film of heat-sensitive stencil material by the use of a thermal head, supply of energy to the thermal head is cut at a time the diameter of the perforations becomes not smaller than 65% and not larger than 95% of a target diameter of the perforations.
Abstract: A method for selecting a queue for service across a shared link. The method includes classifying each queue from a group of queues within a plurality of ingresses into one tier of a number “N” of tiers. The number “N” is greater than or equal to 2. Information about allocated bandwidth is used to classify at least some of the queues into the tiers. Each tier is assigned a different priority. The method also includes matching queues to available egresses by matching queues classified within tiers with higher priorities before matching queues classified within tiers with lower priorities.

Abstract: A panel of an electronic device on which an indicator is mounted is provided with an insertion hole therethrough. The indicator is composed of a light guide with one end surface exposed to a front surface side of the panel and another end surface projecting to a rear surface side of the panel, through the insertion hole, and a light emitting unit provided on the rear surface side of the panel such that a light emitting portion thereof is opposed to the other end surface of the light guide. Further, the light guide is composed of a light transmitting elastic body having a uniform cross section, and fixed by an outer peripheral surface thereof near the one end surface being in pressure contact with an inner peripheral surface of the insertion hole.
Abstract: A displacement detector has a contact sensor incorporating a differential transformer and a circuit for adjusting the amplitude of the driving signal for driving a differential transformer of the sensor by feeding back as a standard signal the driving signal through an amplifier and an AC-DC converter as a standard signal. The sensor has a housing containing a mobile member. The mobile member has a shaft with a hole. An outer tubular body of a linear bush and a ball guide each have a hole, and a pin is inserted through these holes movably in the direction of movement of the mobile member such that the rotation of the mobile member is prevented.
Abstract: A tool for applying clip fasteners which are bent around thin objects to tie them together. The tool has a housing that presents a load opening through which the clip fasteners are loaded. A retractable clip follower is urged by spring action against the fasteners to feed them toward a receiver having a slot for holding the fasteners one at a time. A jaw mechanism operated by a handle is moved toward a fastener held by the receiver and initially bends the fastener about two elbow joints. After a jaw plate carrying the jaws reaches the limit of its motion, continued movement of the jaw mechanism causes the jaws to pivot closed and make a final bend at a center hinge joint of the clip fastener.

Abstract: An image pickup apparatus having a higher resolution and S/N ratio by use of a line confocal optical system and a photomask defect inspection system using the same. A first spatial filter having a plurality of slits extending in a direction perpendicular to a direction of movement of a sample is arranged in front of a light source and illuminates the sample with lines of light. The transmitted light or reflected light from the sample is received by an image sensor through a second spatial filter having slits substantially the same as the first spatial filter. Each image sensor has light receiving elements arranged in a two-dimensional array and transfers charges stored in the light receiving elements for each line. A charge transfer speed of the image sensors and speed of movement of the sample are linked with each other. The sample is illuminated a plurality of times, the charge produced by each illumination is accumulated, and the cumulative charge is output.
Abstract: A narrow bandpass optical filter for use in a WDM communication minimizes the system bit rate error by providing a sufficiently broad passband with respect to the data transfer rate yet has a low group delay across the passband. The passband shape is optimized to have a single maximum in the center of the passband and continuously decreasing transmission there from so as to minimize dispersion in GD across the passband.
Abstract: An inventory method can include assigning a tracking number to each movable item in a set of movable items and speaking the tracking number and a corresponding item description and condition to a speech enabled inventory application in a computing device. The speech enabled inventory application can speech-to-text convert the spoken tracking number and corresponding item description and condition. Moreover, the speech enabled inventory application can provide at least one statistically alternate recognized word for each of the spoken tracking number and corresponding item description and condition. One tracking number, one item description and one item condition can be selected from among the spoken and alternate tracking numbers, the spoken and alternate item descriptions, and the spoken and alternative item conditions. Finally, the speech enabled inventory application can store the selected tracking number, item description and condition in an inventory database.

Abstract: A customer self-service terminal for use in conducting retail transactions. The terminal includes a camera having multi-mode image capability. When a customer wishes to conduct a transaction, the camera is used to scan product barcodes. The camera is set to capture an image of a barcode for extraction of data contained in the barcode. When all desired products have been scanned, the camera is used to record steps in the tendering of payment. The customer presents a financial identification card such as a credit or debit card and swipes it through a magnetic stripe reader. The customer then places the card in the field of view of the camera which is set to a video graphic mode to capture an image of the card for storage. The customer is then presented with a transaction document for signing. The camera is set to a live video mode to record the act of signing. After the transaction document has been signed, the camera captures an image of the signature.
