Abstract: A counter-rotating spindle includes a shoulder tool, a pin tool inserted in the shoulder tool, a first motor that is connected with the pin tool and rotates the pin tool, and a second motor that is connected with the shoulder tool and rotates the shoulder tool. The direction and the speed of the rotation for the pin tool may be selected independently from the speed and direction of rotation of the shoulder tool enabling optimization of the friction stir welding process. Counter-rotating the pin tool and the shoulder tool may improve the mixing abilities and efficiency of the pin tool and may prevent the galling effect between the pin tool and the shoulder tool. The counter-rotating spindle may be used, for example, for continuous path friction stir welding and spot welding of aluminum and its alloys, including cast alloys, as well as joining similar and dissimilar alloys.
Abstract: A leakage current reduction circuit comprising a transmission gate, a feedback channel and a controller is placed between a first device supplied with a first voltage potential and a second device supplied with a second voltage potential. The voltage potential mismatch between the first device and the second device may cause a leakage current flowing through the input stage of the second device. By employing the low leakage power detection circuit, a logic high state generated from the first device can be converted into a logic high state having an amplitude approximately equal to the second voltage potential.
Abstract: A method for preparing a filler-metal weld rod of a filler-metal composition includes the steps of centerless grinding the filler metal weld rod of a forced mixture of a mass of titanium aluminide intermetallic alloy powder that was used to form the weld rod, and hot isostatic pressing the filler-metal weld rod at a temperature greater than 2150° F., at a pressure between about 15,000 pounds per square inch and about 25,000 pounds per square inch and for a time of about 1 to 5 hours, thereby increasing the relative density to between about 98% and about 99%.

Abstract: A low profile mounting assembly for use between a rail car side frame pedestal and the rail car roller bearing includes a shear pad and a bearing adapter. In one embodiment, the shear pad has relatively thin plates joined by an elastomeric layer. In another embodiment, the shear pad includes a projection extending downwardly from a plate to be received and retained by a recess defined in a top surface of the adapter. In another embodiment, a central cavity formed in a lower plate of the shear pad cooperates with the adapter top surface to distribute forces on the roller bearing. In another embodiment, an elastomeric projection of a shear pad plate bears against ridges on the adapter top surface to prevent disengagement.

Abstract: Tuning an axisymmetric resonator such as in a disc resonator gyroscope (DRG) is disclosed. Frequency tuning a DRG in a single step informed by a systematic physical model of the resonator structure, sensing and actuation elements, such as a finite element model, is provided. The sensitivity of selected trimming positions on the resonator to reducing asymmetry terms is determined via perturbations of the systematic model. As well, the dependence of the parameters of model transfer functions between actuation and sensing elements on resonator asymmetry are systematically determined. One or two measured transfer functions may then be analyzed according to the systematic model to fully determine the needed asymmetry correction components of the DRG. One or two of four groups of four electrostatic bias electrodes or four groups of four laser trimming locations for the DRG are utilized to correct the asymmetry components which can give rise to mistuning.
