Abstract: A composition includes a coupling agent composition and a polymer precursor. The coupling agent composition includes an aromatic amine and a first cycloolefin substituted with at least one epoxy group. The polymer precursor includes a second cycloolefin and an epoxy compound. The coupling agent composition is capable of bonding to a filler having a corresponding binding site and the coupling agent composition is compatible with a metathesis catalyst capable of catalyzing a ring-opening metathesis polymerization reaction when contacted to the first cycloolefin or the second cycloolefin. An associated method is also provided.

Abstract: The present embodiment provides a system and method for lowering the saturated gain level of a thin-disk laser oscillator by multipassing each gain generator in such a way to cancel some of the wavefront error contributions from the disk surfaces. Wavefront aberrations introduced on one pass of the gain disk are canceled through symmetry on successive passes. The reduced wavefront error significantly improves design space for single-mode resonators. Maximum effectiveness is achieved by rotating the gain disk so that the fold plane-of-symmetry reverses the largest wavefront error or specifically chosen functional forms.

Abstract: A sensor for detecting a parameter of an object includes a probe, a first sensing member for detecting the parameter of an object to be sensed and a second sensing member for determining an orientation of the probe relative to the object to be sensed. The second sensing member communicates the orientation of the probe to a data acquisition device to minimize data analysis errors associated with inaccurate orientation information.

Abstract: Methods and systems for manufacturing composite aircraft wings and other structures are disclosed herein. A tool assembly for use in manufacturing composite laminates in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes a tool plate carried by a movable support system. The tool plate includes a tool surface configured to support fiber-reinforced resin material and define an outer mold line (OML) of the fiber-reinforced resin material. The movable support system is configured to respond to signals from a controller to automatically change the shape of the tool surface and alter the OML of the finished part to suit the particular application. In one embodiment, the movable support system can include a plurality of telescoping actuators operably coupled to the tool plate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to hepatic fibrosis-suppressing agents that are suitable for treating or preventing fibrotic liver diseases such as cirrhosis, which comprise as an active ingredient a substance that inhibits the production or accumulation of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans including chondroitinase ABC and ADAMTS-4; and methods of screening for the agents. The present inventors discovered for the first time that hepatic fibrosis could be efficiently suppressed by suppressing the production or accumulation of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans. Specifically, fibrosis of liver tissues can be suppressed by administering chondroitinase ABC, a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan-degrading enzyme, or by using siRNA to suppress the expression of C4ST-1, C6ST-1, or C6ST-2, a sulfotransferase for chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans. Compounds such as nucleic acids that are used as siRNA can be used as effective agents for suppressing hepatic fibrosis.

Abstract: A uniquely configured rotating seal tooth is used in conjunction with commonly used labyrinth-type seals that provide a seal between a rotating component and a stationary component. The uniquely configured rotating seal tooth produces a compression mechanism to counter leakage flow through the labyrinth of seal teeth, thereby lessening the pressure gradient that drives leakage and reversing the direction of some of the leakage flow.

Abstract: A burner for use in a combustion system of an industrial gas turbine. The burner includes a fuel/air premixer including a splitter vane defining a first, radially inner passage and a second, radially outer passage, the first and second passages each having air flow turning vane portions which impart swirl to the combustion air passing through the premixer. The vane portions in each passage are commonly configured to impart a same swirl direction in each passage. A plurality of splitter vanes may be provided to define three or more annular passages in the premixer.

Abstract: A distributed peer-to-peer document archive system provides version-control, security, access control, linking among stored documents and remote access to documents usually associated with centralized storage systems while still providing the simplicity, personalization and robustness to network outages associated with personal and peer-to-peer storage systems. A “keyring” is an encrypted repository that allows a user to recover and access a user's entire digital archive with a single master key. After the key is created, it does not need to be updated, and can be stored in a safe, safety-deposit box or other secure location. In the event the user's computer is stolen or destroyed, the user need only install the system on a new machine and import the master key. The system will then use that key to browse nearby servers to find and decrypt all files necessary to recreate the full digital archive in its most recent state.

Abstract: An electrical coil assembly utilizing a bimetallic two-piece terminal construction and a method of manufacturing same are provided. The inner terminal structure utilizes a material that aids in the touchless attachment of the fine gauge magnetic wire to the inner terminal structure. The low mass of the inner terminal structure allows for increased winding speeds during the manufacturing process. The outer terminal structure utilizes a material that provides good corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. The inner and outer terminal structures are electrically attached after the winding and electrical attachment process of the fine gauge magnetic wire. The coil and two-piece terminal connectors may then be encapsulated to provide a final electrical coil assembly.
