Abstract: A pixel structure for a liquid crystal display (LCD) device with multiple domain vertical alignment, including multiple pixels having liquid crystal molecules with a negative dielectric constant anisotropy. For each pixel, the pixel electrode and the common electrode are each divided into at least N corresponding domains, and each domain is formed by a directional nanowire grid polarizer (NWGP). The directional NWGP of each domain of the pixel electrode has a first planar direction. The directional NWGP of each domain of the common electrode has a second planar direction substantially perpendicular to the first planar direction of the corresponding domain of the pixel electrode. When the pixel is driven by a voltage difference, the directional NWGPs function as polarizers, such that an orientation of the liquid crystal molecules between the NWGPs is about (360/N) degrees from each of the first and second planar directions.

Abstract: Liquid crystal display (LCD) systems and related methods with pixel elements driven at different frequencies are provided. A representative LCD system includes: a plurality of pixel elements arranged in an array, each of the plurality of pixel elements having a first sub-region and a second sub-region; a low-frequency driving circuit operative to drive each of the first sub-regions; and a high-frequency driving circuit operative to drive each of the second sub-regions at a driving frequency different than a driving frequency of the low-frequency driving circuits; wherein the first sub-regions exhibit a different size than the second sub-regions.

Abstract: A light control device and a display device using the same. The light control device includes a polymer networked liquid crystal (PNLC) or polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) display switchable between a scattering state and a first display state, and a guest-host (G-H) liquid crystal display (LCD) switchable between a transparent state and a second display state. A light source of the G-H LCD is disposed at a side of the PNLC or PDLC display and aligned to its liquid crystal layer. In a first operational mode, the PNLC or PDLC display is switched to the first display state, and the G-H LCD is switched to the transparent state and becomes transparent. In a second operational mode, the G-H LCD is switched to the second display state, and the PNLC or PDLC display is switched to the scattering state to function as a light guide layer for the G-H LCD.
Abstract: A representative LCD system includes: liquid crystal material disposed between first and second substrates; protrusions supported by the first substrate and arranged in an array, each of the protrusions extending from a base; first pixel electrodes, with a corresponding one of the first pixel electrodes being positioned adjacent the base of a corresponding one of the protrusions; first common electrodes, with a corresponding one of the first common electrodes being positioned adjacent the base of a corresponding one of the protrusions such that each of the protrusions is positioned between one of the first pixel electrodes and one of the first common electrodes; second pixel electrodes, with a corresponding one of the second pixel electrodes being positioned on a corresponding one of the protrusions; and second common electrodes, with a corresponding one of the second common electrodes being positioned on a corresponding one of the protrusions.

Abstract: A pixel structure, including pixels arranged in a matrix. Each pixel includes sub-pixels arranged along a row direction, including first type sub-pixels and at least one second type sub-pixel. The sub-pixels in different rows are arranged alternately such that each sub-pixel column includes the same numbers of the second type sub-pixels. Each sub-pixel has a color resist and a photo spacer disposed thereon. The color resists of the second type sub-pixels have a sectional difference from the color resists of the first type sub-pixels, and the sectional difference is greater than a height of the photo spacer of each of the first type sub-pixels. For each second type sub-pixel, a photo spacer (PS) stage is extended from a corresponding common voltage line, and the color resist is disposed on the corresponding PS stage to form the sectional difference. Thus, each common voltage line has the same number of PS stages.
