  • Patent number: 8111131
Abstract: Programmable occupancy sensors that control the on/off operation of a fluorescent lamp automatically determine loss of lamp life as the lamp is used. The programmable occupancy sensors can provide lamp life status and can automatically alert a user when a lamp is nearing its end of life and should be replaced. The occupancy sensors are also programmable to automatically maximize lamp life and energy savings by selecting an optimal time delay from among a number of selectable time delays at which to operate the sensor. The selection is based on an occupancy pattern sensed by the sensor over a given period of time. The optimal time delay, which prevents the lamp from turning off immediately after last sensing occupancy, extends lamp life by limiting the number of lamp off/on transitions, which shortens lamp life, in view of overall energy usage and lamp usage.

  • Publication number: 20110310625
Abstract: Light fixtures comprising an organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the light source, and further comprising a housing, at least one hollow, and an optic. The at least one hollow defines an intended area where light is emitted, and includes a reflective surface to reflect light within the intended area. The optic comprises a refractive portion that is defined by two edges. In one embodiment, the OLED is coupled to the two edges of the optic. In another embodiment, the OLED is coupled to and contacts an inner surface of the refractive portion. In either embodiment, the OLED is either sufficiently close to or contacting the refractive portion such that surface area of emitted light is maximized. Additionally, the OLED is placed sufficiently close to (or within) the intended area that reflected light and optical efficiency are maximized.

  • Patent number: 8028537
Abstract: Disclosed exemplary solid state light fixtures use optical cavities to combine or integrate light from LEDs or the like. In such a fixture, the cavity is formed by a light transmissive structure having a volume, and a diffuse reflector that covers a contoured portion of the structure. A heat sink member supports a flexible circuit board so as to position the light emitters to couple light to the transmissive structure and provide effective heat dissipation. The circuit board has flexible tabs mounting the emitters. When installed in the fixture, the tabs bend and the emitters press against a sufficiently rigid periphery of the light transmissive structure. TIM may be compressed between the heat sink member and the opposite surface of each tab. Heat conductive surface pads and heat conductors through vias through the tabs conduct heat from the emitters to the heat sink member, e.g. through the TIM.

  • Patent number: 8029151
Abstract: Embodiments of this invention provide a secondary, or back-up, lighting system for light fixtures having a primary light source. The back-up lighting system is configured to mount onto a support structure of the light fixture. The back-up lighting system includes a light source and a lens with optical properties. A housing retains the light source and lens. The back-up lighting system may include a controller that monitors the main power source for the primary light source of the light fixture. The controller activates the light source of the back-up lighting system upon detecting power restoration after a power loss. In some embodiments of this invention, the back-up lighting system includes a secondary power source that powers the back-up lighting system during a loss of power.

  • Publication number: 20110235325
Abstract: An exemplary general lighting fixture includes an assembly forming an optical integrating volume for receiving and optically integrating light from one or more solid state light emitters and for emitting integrated light. The assembly includes a reflector having a diffusely reflective interior surface defining a substantial portion of a perimeter of the integrating volume. A light transmissive solid fills at least a substantial portion of the optical integrating volume. A light emitter interface region of the solid, for each solid state light emitter, closely conforms to the light emitting region of the respective emitter. A surface of the transmissive solid conforms closely to and is in proximity with the interior surface of the reflector. The transmissive solid also provides a light emission surface, at least a portion of which forms a transmissive optical passage for emission of integrated light, from the volume, in a direction facilitating a general lighting application.

  • Publication number: 20110204242
Abstract: Collimators and methods of making collimators. According to certain embodiments a collimator may be used with a light source, where the light source emits light along a light source axis. The base of the collimator may be angled such that the collimator refracts the light in a direction that is angled relative to the light source axis. There may also be provided methods for making a collimator. According to one method, a mold is first provided that produces an uncut collimator having an extended portion. The uncut collimator may be cut at an angle to produce a collimator with an angled base. In another method, there may be a mold with a base cavity, and a wedge may be inserted in the base cavity. The wedge forms a collimator with an angled base.
