Publication number: 20220317109Abstract: Chemical test methods for evaluating the alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) of an aggregate or an aggregate within a particular concrete job mix design by exposing the aggregate to a simplified system with the same or simulated long-term pore solution conditions is provided. ASR is a chemical reaction occurring between alkaline hydroxides within cement paste and certain types of amorphous silica found in mineral aggregates. Causing an accumulation of internal pressure within concrete structures due to the formation of a hygroscopic gel through the absorption of water, ASR leads to expansion and cracking of concrete. The present test method determines the reactivity index (RI) of a given aggregate, or an aggregate as it is to be used in a proposed concrete job mix design by determining the average concentrations of calcium, aluminum, and silicon across multiple tested samples, wherein the RI is the ratio of the concentrations of silicon to that of aluminum and calcium combined.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 4, 2020Publication date: October 6, 2022Applicant: The United States Department of Transportation / Federal Highway AdministrationInventors: Terence S Arnold, Chandni Balachandran, Jose F Munoz

Patent number: 11439150Abstract: The disclosure relates to a metal phenolic network (MPN) composition for treating algae in an aqueous environment, in particular to entrap/capture, flocculate, and settle or otherwise remove the algae from a location where it damages the aqueous environment and/or harms organisms in the aqueous environment. The MPN composition includes a metal phenolic network (MPN) film and a secondary flocculant such as a clay material or ionic flocculant. Application of the MPN composition to an aqueous environment, for example a marine environment containing a harmful algal bloom (HAB) induces flocculation of the algae with the MPN composition and sedimentation of the resulting floc. Algae removed from a surface region of the aqueous environment in this way eventually kills the algae at least due to a lack of sunlight, and reduces or eliminates the ability of the algae to further damage the aqueous environment until its eventual death.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2020Date of Patent: September 13, 2022Assignee: The Administrators of the Tulane Educational FundInventors: Vijay T.
