Patent number: 10954152Abstract: A supercritical water oxidation-flame piloted vortex reactor has a hydrothermal flame produced within the interior of the reactor fed by a fuel including a waste water stream, and has a subcritical wash stream, including water below its critical point, that creates an upward helical flow in the material within the reactor. The hydrothermal flame and upward helical flow produce within the reactor a supercritical core region, a subcritical outer region around the core region, and a transcritical intermediate region between them. The upward helical flow serves to transfer precipitated ionic compounds out of the supercritical core region, through the transcritical intermediate region, and into the subcritical outer region where they re-dissolve. A processed flow, including purified water, is removed from an upper portion of the supercritical core region by an aspirator.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2020Date of Patent: March 23, 2021Assignee: United States of America as Represented by the Administrator of National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Michael C. Patent number: 10934028Abstract: A lightweight flexible BNNT mat or fabric provides improved thermal stability and shielding capabilities under a hypersonic thermal flux. The BNNT mat reduces the stagnation temperature and maintains a low regression rate. An in-situ passivation layer may be formed on the BNNT mat or fabric under high thermal flux. The passivation layer minimizes or prevents penetration of the atmosphere (air or gas) as well as heat and radiation through the thickness of the BNNT material, and it effectively diffuses heat throughout the mat or fabric laterally and radially to minimize localized excessive heat. A BNNT mat according to the present disclosure may also efficiently transfer heat from the BNNT material via radiation due to the high thermal emissivity (0.92) of the BNNT material.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2017Date of Patent: March 2, 2021Assignee: U.S.A. as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: John-Andrew S. Patent number: 10888487Abstract: A grasp assist system includes a glove having a glove palm and fingers, with the glove worn on a user's hand. A sensor measures flexion of the glove fingers, and thus a change of position and/or attitude of the fingers is determined. Finger saddles at least partially surround a phalange of a respective one of the user's fingers. The system uses one or more tendon actuators to pull on flexible tendons. Each tendon connects to a respective finger saddle. A controller is in communication with the actuators and sensor(s). The glove may use feedback from optional contact sensors to adjust tension, and may have a built-in restorative force. In executing a control method, the controller selectively applies tension to the tendons in response to finger flexion, via the tendon actuators, at a level sufficient for moving the user's fingers when the user executes a hand maneuver.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2018Date of Patent: January 12, 2021Assignee: United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jonathan M.
