  • Publication number: 20020185125
Abstract: A device for aerosolizing a liquid includes a chamber having a deformable wall which expands and contracts as fluid is delivered and expelled from a fluid chamber. The chamber is partially bounded by a vibrating structure having holes therein for expelling the fluid. In another aspect, the invention provides exemplary aerosolization apparatus and methods for aerosolizing a substance. A liquid is transferred from a first chamber into a second chamber having a substance that is in a dry state to form a solution. The solution is then transferred from the second chamber and onto an atomization member. The atomization member is operated to aerosolize the solution.

  • Publication number: 20020121274
Abstract: An aperture plate comprises a plate body having a top surface, a bottom surface, and tapered walls that form a plurality of apertures that taper from the bottom surface to the top surface wherein the plate body comprises a base material and a corrosion resistive material plating at least the tapered walls. The aperture plate can be produced by electroplating a mandrel wherein the mandrel is placed within a solution containing a material that is to be deposited onto the mandrel. Electrical current is applied to the mandrel to form the aperture plate on the mandrel. The process can be repeated so as to deposit a second layer, such as a corrosion resistive material, over a base layer material. In such fashion, a laminated electroformed aperture plate can be produced.

  • Publication number: 20020104530
Abstract: An aerosolization system comprises a gas flow passage, and an aerosol generator comprising a plate having a plurality of apertures and a vibratable element disposed to vibrate the plate. The aerosol generator is adapted to aerosolize a liquid for delivery into the gas flow passage. A flow sensor is configured to sense a gas flow through the passage, and a controller is employed to actuate the aerosol generator based on the gas flow sensed by the flow sensor.

  • Patent number: 6235177
Abstract: A method for forming an aperture plate comprises providing a mandrel that is constructed of a mandrel body having a conductive surface and a plurality of non-conductive islands disposed on the conductive surface. The mandrel is placed within a solution containing a material that is to be deposited onto the mandrel. Electrical current is applied to the mandrel to form an aperture plate on the mandrel, with the apertures having an exit angle that is in the range from about 30° to about 60°.

  • Patent number: 6014970
Abstract: The invention provides exemplary aerosolization apparatus and methods for aerosolizing a substance. According to one exemplary method, a cartridge is coupled to a liquid dispenser and includes a substance which is in a dry state. A liquid is dispensed from the dispenser into the cartridge so that the substance may be dissolved into the dispensed liquid to form a solution. The solution is then transferred from the cartridge and onto an atomization member which is operated to aerosolize the solution.

  • Patent number: 5938117
Abstract: The invention provides exemplary methods and apparatus for dispensing liquids as an atomized spray. In one particularly preferably method, a liquid is dispensed as an atomized spray from a vibratable member having a front surface and a rear surface, with the member having at least one tapered hole between the surfaces for dispensing the liquid. The tapered hole has a larger cross-sectional area at the rear surface than at the front surface. The liquid is delivered from a supply container to the rear surface of the vibratable member in an amount sufficient to cover the hole with liquid. The vibratable member is then vibrated to dispense at least a portion of the liquid through the hole and from the front surface. Additional liquid is delivered from the supply container and to the rear surface in volumes that are substantially equal to the volumes dispensed.
