  • Patent number: 4215626
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing articles made of paper, plastic and the like from n series of strips of such materials is provided wherein n represents the number of strips and is an integer equal to or greater than two. Initially transverse perforations are formed at regular intervals in each of the strips to define in each strip a plurality of elementary sections having the same length L. The strips are then superimposed such that each perforated strip is offset with respect to an adjacent strip in the longitudinal direction by a distance equal to L/n. Thereafter the apparatus which performs the method exerts, successively and independently, on each of the successively superimposed strips a pulling and tearing off action to define the longitudinally offset superimposed perforated strips into separate elementary sections.

  • Patent number: 4212718
Abstract: The process enables the simultaneous production of hydroxytelechelic polymers and oligomers by the radical route. At least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in the presence of hydrogen peroxide under the effect of ultra-violet radiation. The polymerization is carried out in a diluent medium comprising essentially an alcohol. The process can be operated to produce polymers having average molecular weights between one hundred and one million and to produce selectively unimodal, bi-modal or multi-modal distributions of molecular weights.

  • Patent number: 4210793
Abstract: The invention relates to a microwave applicator intended to radiate a uniform power intensity to an elongated zone of which the frequency is in a predetermined range situated around a central frequency F. This applicator includes a wave guide 1 provided with a plurality of resonant slots 4 of which the centers are separated by a distance of an even number of half wave lengths .lambda.g/2, if .lambda.g is the length of guided wave corresponding to the central frequency F. The shunt slots are aligned on a longitudinal axis situated in an axial plane of the guide and are each associated with an inside post arranged in the guide on the transverse axis of said slot, so that the various slots radiate with essentially uniform amplitude. The wave guide is provided with outside posts of adjustable height penetrating into each inside post through the guide and flanges rising above the guide at the periphery of the face provided with shunt slots.

  • Patent number: 4207489
Abstract: The extraction electrode consists of a metallic screen provided with an opening and placed within a vacuum chamber in front of an ion source, the screen being brought to a negative potential with respect to the source. Displacement of the electrode is controlled from the exterior of the chamber by two mechanical systems for independent displacement of the two lateral sides of the screen. Each system comprises a deformable parallelogram pivotally coupled to a member for supporting one side of the screen and to a member which is slidably mounted on a guide column, and a mechanism for controlling the deformation of the parallelogram by means of a link-arm rigidly fixed at one end to a toothed wheel in mesh with an endless screw and control rod which is accessible from the exterior of the chamber. The invention is primarily applicable to the construction of ion implanters, especially for the fabrication of semiconductors.

  • Patent number: 4206408
Abstract: A device for investigating surface phenomena by field emission contains an emission point in an evacuatable enclosure facing a fluorescent screen. The point is desorbed by a first pulse which produces sufficient heating of the point to attain substantially complete desorption and field emission or field desorption is produced by a second pulse spaced a controllable time after the desorption pulse. Repetitive measurements are possible by producing a train of the first and second pulses during which parameters can be varied and the results observed. Methods are disclosed for determining the temperature of the point from the measured field emission both by relating field emission to temperature and by relating temperature to desorption.

  • Patent number: 4201768
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for obtaining agents having mitogenic and/or adjuvant properties, from Nocardia cells.According to this process Nocardia whole cells are subjected to a rupturing treatment of their walls within an aqueous medium, particularly distilled water. After the separation of the non-ruptured cells and of the wall fragments of the ruptured cells, mitogenic agents are extracted from the remaining aqueous phase. The fractions obtained are useful as laboratory reagents and for the production of medicamentous compositions in which they are associated with a pharmaceutical vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4200213
Abstract: A percussion apparatus, for example for driving nails or staples, having an auxiliary piston which when released thrusts a main operating piston to an intermediate position. The auxiliary piston transfers a metered quantity of gaseous fuel together with combustion supporting air to a space between the main piston and cylinder head separating the auxiliary piston cylinder from the main piston cylinder. The explosive mixture in the space is then ignited and the main piston is thrust in a first direction displacing a driver member and simultaneously the auxiliary piston is thrust in the opposite direction to its initial position where it is retained until released to start another operating cycle; the main piston automatically returns to its initial position as the combustion gases are exhausted to the atmosphere.
