  • Patent number: 5389379
Abstract: A process for the preparation of microcapsules containing biologically active material is disclosed. The process involves dissolving a polymer into a solvent into which the active material is also introduced; atomizing the resulting suspension or solution and collecting the droplets in a non-solvent for the polymeric droplets containing active material, resulting in coagulation. Subsequently, the coagulated droplets are hardened in a second non-solvent.

  • Patent number: 5384132
Abstract: Disclosed are lyophilized gonadotropin containing preparations containing a dicarboxylic acid salt stabilizer. The particular proteins (e.g. LH, TSH, FSH, or HCG) are in admixture with, and at least partially capable of stabilization by, the particular stabilizer in lyophilized form. The preparations contain a sufficient amount of dicarboxylic acid salt to stabilize the protein in freeze-dried form for a desired time at a desired temperature. Typical dicarboxylic acid salts disclosed are the salts of citric, tartaric, and aspartic acids. The preparations preferably include a non-reducing disaccharide to increase the collapse temperature of the solution to be lyophilized. • Patent number: 5367082
Abstract: In a process for the preparation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole from aniline, sulfur and carbon disulfide under pressure and for separation of the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole from the crude reaction product by cooling and recycling the desirable intermediates and by-products into the reactor together with aniline, sulfur and carbon disulfide, the reaction is carried out using a residence time in the reactor of at least one hour to a time before the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole product thus-formed begins to decompose into undesirable intermediate products. A maximum hydrogen sulfide pressure is maintained on quenching to a temperature ranging between 220 and 280.degree. C. by mixing the crude reaction product with carbon disulfide at a temperature sufficient to obtain a homogeneous quenched mixture. The hydrogen sulfide is removed completely only after crystallization of the 2-mercaptobenzothiazole.

  • Patent number: 5354537
Abstract: A needle suitable for piercing a septum of a vacuum sealed container and through which a measured fluid sample from the container may be withdrawn. The needle is capable of withdrawing fluid from small sample volumes, such that the dead volume remaining in the sealed container is reduced. The needle has an elongated body having a longitudinal axis, an unobstructed bore therethrough along the longitudinal axis, a free end, and an end region adjacent said free end which has a slight conical taper toward said free end at a predetermined angle relative to the longitudinal axis. The free end includes an oblique cut through the conically tapered end region at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis being substantially larger than the predetermined angle of the taper so as to produce an elliptical opening at the free end. The elliptical opening lies along a plane diagonal to the longitudinal axis. This produces a toe or tip that is reduced in height allowing for a decrease in dead volume.
