  • Patent number: 5292520
Abstract: Disclosed are stabilized dry chemical (e.g. pharmaceutical) compositions containing the water soluble acid addition salt of a poorly soluble basic compound (e.g. mianserin, apomorphine, chlorpromazine, imipramine, or promethazine); an excipient selected from the group consisting of microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, calcium hydrogen phosphate, and mixtures thereof; and a water soluble (>2 mg/ml) alkaline stabilizer. The resulting dry compositions are relatively more bioavailable and stable than compositions not containing the water soluble alkaline stabilizer, especially after high temperature (>45.degree.) granulation processes. The process for preparing the dry composition is also more "rugged" with the added water soluble alkaline stabilizer.

  • Patent number: 5292839
Abstract: Novel unsaturated peroxyketals useful as molecular weight regulators in polymerization reactions are disclosed. Also disclosed are a polymerization process employing these novel unsaturated peroxyketals as molecular weight regulators, polymers and oligomers made by this process and articles of manufacture comprising one or more polymers or oligomers made by this process. These molecular weight regulating peroxyketals provide the ability to introduce an epoxy functionality to the oligomer or polymer as well as an additional functionality, in a manner which gives a higher monomer conversion and less by-products than with comparable chain transfer regulators.

  • Patent number: 5289308
Abstract: In an optically non-linear (NLO) polymeric material a frequency doubling structure composed of alternatingly poled NLO polymer is made. This structure can be made by forming a layer of NLO polymer, effecting poling in it with the use of an electric field, partially removing the layer of NLO polymer by etching, such that in the polymer a grating structure is formed composed of etched grooves and projecting polymer parts, the width of the grooves matching that of the polymer parts, dividing the polymer layer containing the grating structure into at least two sections, and placing the two sections one on top of the other, such that grooves of the one section are back-filled by projecting polymer parts of the other section. To prevent the enclosure of air a filler may be added, preferably in the form of a solution of the NLO polymer.

  • Patent number: 5264251
Abstract: An aramid yarn, preferably poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), is coated with a water swellable superabsorbent material. The swelling value of the yarn is at least 60. The superabsorbent provides water blocking capability to the yarn, so that it is suitable for use as a strength member, for example, in water tight optical communication cables. The yarn is made by successively treating an aramid yarn with a water-in-oil emulsion, a superabsorbent material being present in the water phase of the emulsion, and removing the liquid components from the treated yarn by evaporation.
