    Abstract: A method of assisting in the seaming of a papermaker's fabric using a seam assist device is disclosed. The seam assist device is comprised of two portions. Each portion having an attaching edge that is attached to a predetermined distance from the ends of the fabric by fitting spiral or loop elements into voids in the surface of the fabric and anchoring the elements using a binder or pintle. Connecting edges on each portion are then connected together, thereby causing the two attached ends of the fabric to be brought together for seaming.

    Abstract: A papermaker's fabric, usable in the forming section of a paper machine, has first and second layers of cross-machine direction (CD) yarns interwoven with sets of machine-direction (MD) yarns. Each set has four pairs of MD yarns with each pair comprising a first MD yarn and a second MD yarn. The first and second MD yarns each cross between and weave with both the first and second layers of CD yarns. In the MD, each pair effectively produces a four-shed contour in the first layer and a two-shed contour in the second layer. Each pair is shifted in the CD, such that 4 pairs of MD yarns combine to effectively produce a four-shed contour in the CD in the first layer.

Because each element directly positions the hook rather than indirectly controlling a positioning mechanism, the selection card is mechanically simple and compact.

Hence, the press fabric provides a solution to the problem of non-uniformity in the seam area, which often results in sheet marking.

The sacrificial material is deposited in droplets in a controlled manner so as to control the x, y, z dimension of the material deposited and preferably has having an average diameter of 10? (10 microns) or more. A polymeric resin material is then deposited on the base substrate in all areas except those on which the sacrificial material has previously been applied. The polymeric resin material is then set by means appropriate to its composition, and the sacrificial material removed. Optionally, the polymeric resin material may then be abraded to provide the belt with a uniform thickness, and a smooth, macroscopically monoplanar surface.

    Abstract: Provided is a method for manufacturing a papermaking belt structure using tapes made of a solid thermoplastic resin surrounding a fibrous matrix. The method calls for applying a layer of CD oriented tapes to a mandrel surface, then applying a layer of MD oriented tapes over the CD layer, applying pressure and heat to the mandrel containing the CD and MD layers so to melt the resin and entirely bond/encapsulate the fibrous matrix. The belt structure thus obtained may thereafter be grooved, drilled or other processed as desired. Additionally, the above method can be reversed as to the MD/CD order of layering. Also, a layer entirely of resin can be applied, preferably prior to, but also after or in between the MD/CD layers. Also, rubber can comprise one or more layers.

    Abstract: The present invention is a method for making a roll cover and a roll cover, wherein at least one material is applied to the surface of the roll or a base substrate. In a first embodiment, a single material is applied as a flowable phase. A uniform coating of the material is applied to the roll, and upon setting of the material, such as by cooling, curing, or other means, a smooth and permanent roll cover is formed upon the surface of the roll. In another embodiment, at least two materials are applied in flowable phases to the surface of the roll. The first material may be a sacrificial, removable first material, applied to the surface of the roll cover in a preselected pattern. After the sacrificial material has been applied, a second material, such as a functional resin, is applied to the surface of the roll cover with the sacrificial material removed after the second material has set. In another embodiment, the use of sacrificial material is avoided and the material is applied in a predetermined pattern.

    Abstract: A papermaker's fabric, usable in the forming section of a paper machine, has three layers of cross-machine-direction (CD) wefts. The forming layer wefts are grouped into pairs. This twinning of the top-layer wefts results in non-equal spacing in the forming layer. This spacing imparts a desired non-uniformity in the web-supporting surface, thereby reducing the fabric diagonal problem. One of the top-layer wefts in each pair is vertically stacked with the middle and wear side layer wefts. The other top-layer wefts in each pair are unstacked. This alignment increases the drainage properties of the fabric. The middle layer wefts provide extra stability in the CD.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing and a papermaker's or industrial fabric, such as a dryer fabric for the dryer section of a paper machine, includes the application of a polymeric resin material onto preselected locations on the backside of a base substrate using a piezojet array which deposits the polymeric resin material in droplets having an average diameter of 10? (10 microns) or more to build up discrete, discontinuous deposits of the polymeric resin material having a height of about 0.5 mm at the preselected locations. The preselected locations may be the knuckles formed by the interweaving of the yarns making up the fabric. The purpose of the deposits is to separate the backside of the dryer fabric from a surface, such as that of a dryer cylinder or turning roll, to enable air trapped between the dryer fabric and the surface to escape in lengthwise and crosswise directions parallel to the surface, instead of being forced through the fabric, possibly causing “drop off”.

The spiral wound MD layer is overlaid with a cross-machine direction (CD) layer of similar or dissimilar raw stock and mated by any of a number of means. The spiral wound MD layer can also be mated to another MD layer spiraled in the opposite direction and in one embodiment further mated to a CD layer. The fabric is preferably produced so that its neutral line is oriented toward the paper side of the fabric so that the paper sheet will stretch less than when typical dryer fabrics are used to turn the paper sheet and fabric around the dryer cylinders.

    Abstract: A resin-impregnated endless belt for a long nip press or calender of the shoe type, or for other papermaking and paper-processing applications, has a base fabric in the form of an endless loop with an inner surface, an outer surface, a machine direction and a cross-machine direction. The base fabric has machine-direction (MD) structural elements and cross-machine-direction (CD) structural elements in an open structure wherein at least some of the MD structural elements and CD structural elements are spaced apart from one another. The MD structural elements cross the CD structural elements at a plurality of crossing points, where they are joined to one another by mechanical, chemical or thermo-bonding means. A coating of a first polymeric resin is on the inner surface of the base fabric. The first polymeric resin impregnates and renders the base fabric impermeable to liquids, and forms a layer on the inner surface thereof. The coating is smooth and provides the belt with a uniform thickness.
