  • Patent number: 6510158
Abstract: A method and apparatus includes processing for combining a plurality of virtual circuits into a combined virtual circuit, where such processing begins by buffering cells of each virtual circuit into a corresponding buffer. The processing then continues by obtaining priority information for each virtual circuit and obtaining logical buffer de-queuing information. The priority information, for example, may equate to priorities established via the varying levels of ATM services. The logical buffer de-queuing information corresponds to an access sequence for a plurality of logical ring buffers that are comprised of the buffers, or buffer identifiers. The processing then continues by generating the combined virtual circuit based on the logical buffer de-queuing information and the priority information.

  • Patent number: 6504094
Abstract: There is provided an adapter for mounting electronic equipment, such as telecommunications switching equipment, to a rack. The adapter is configured to comply with industry standards, such as the Electronic Industries Association standards, that prescribe how electronic equipment should be mounted and installed. The adapter also protects and guides fiber optic cables connecting a communications network to electronic circuitry units which form part of the electronic equipment. In compliance with Bellcore standards, the adapter provides means for bend radius control which ensures that the fiber optic cable does not have a bend radius of less than one inch as it is dressed between the electronic circuitry units and the communications network. A cable cavity defined by the adapter is intended to minimize that fiber optic cable contained therein catches on the equipment and clothing of service personnel.

  • Patent number: 6501755
Abstract: There is provided a method of signalling a message using a terminal address across multiple network entities. At least two contiguous network entities are associated with addressing spaces for which message addresses are not routable by way of the terminal address and are not otherwise routable by way of a single address. At every network border between any two contiguous network entities wherein an immediately succeeding network entity does not provide an addressing space through which the message is routable, it is determined whether the party number is to be stored and replaced with a new party number. If so, the party number is stored so as to permit its subsequent retrieval according to a last-in and first-out precedence to thereby create a stored party number. Once the party number has been stored, a replacement address is assigned as the party number. Also at every such border, it is determined whether the party number is to be discarded and replaced with a stored party number.

  • Patent number: 6487210
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a high bandwidth multi-source interconnection using point-to-point buses that may be utilized in a communication switch is presented. In the communication switch, a number of output buffers are included to correspond to the outputs of the switch. Each output receives data from a number of different inputs to the switch. Each output buffer includes a plurality of queuing elements where each queuing element receives data from at least one of the inputs and buffers the data prior to insertion into an output data stream corresponding to the output of the output buffer. The plurality of queuing of elements are intercoupled in a daisy chain configuration such that a daisy chain output of one queuing element is coupled to the daisy chain input of the succeeding queuing element. The daisy chain configuration provides a data path through which a data stream that becomes the output of the output buffer is carried.

  • Patent number: 6486975
Abstract: A method for recognizing tones in a signal in a telecommunication transmission uses samples of the signal to determine whether a tone of an expected frequency and wave shape is contained in the signal. If the method accurately predicts the value of the next sample, then a tone of the expected frequency and wave shape has been detected. Another method may be used to recognize sequences of tones comprising intervals with particular frequencies and durations. The method may be applied to the detection of initiation sequences for fax and modem transmissions, for example the ITU-T recommendation T.30 V.21 fax initiation sequence and the ITU-T recommendation V.25 modem transmission preamble. The method may be incorporated in a device for detecting modem or fax transmissions on a line and routing such modem and fax transmissions to a modem/fax relay.

  • Patent number: 6442134
Abstract: In a method of establishing communication over a network a number of nodes are interconnected in a ring architecture. Virtual connections are set up on a pair of counter-rotating packet-based rings to interconnect the nodes. At each node packets destined for that node are extracted from the rings, outgoing packets are added to the rings, and packets on each ring not destined for that each node pass directly through. This arrangement establishes a virtual mesh structure between the nodes. Either each node transmits packets on both rings or receives packets from both rings. In the case where each node transmits packets on both rings the node selects one of the rings from which to receive packets in the absence of a fault, selects the fault-free ring from which to receive packets if only one of the rings has a fault, and selects both rings from which to receive packets if both rings have faults.

  • Patent number: 6442132
Abstract: A method of establishing and maintaining a connection through an asynchronous cell-based network having a plurality of switching nodes, comprises setting up a first bi-directional path between source and destination endpoints through one or more switching nodes, setting up an alternate bi-directional path between the endpoints, and switching from the first path to the alternate path by first causing the destination endpoint to send cells back to the source endpoint over the alternate path while still receiving cells over the first path. When the source endpoint receives an indication that the destination endpoint has transferred to the alternate path, it sends cells from the source endpoint to the destination endpoint to complete the transfer to the alternate path.

  • Patent number: 6438100
Abstract: A method and apparatus provides greater flexibility, scalability and manageability when multiple services are being supported by a Carrier Scale Internetworking (CSI) system by including processing that detects when connectivity to an Route Server Instance (RSI) host that is supporting an active RSI has failed and provides a replacement RSI host from a redundancy set. In additional, forwarders (i.e., core forwarder, edge forwarder, and/or default forwarder), upon detecting a change in the RSI host, connect to the new RSI host. RSI hosts in the redundancy set use a redundancy chain protocol to select the new RSI host to function as the active RSI. Note that an RSI host may be a virtual entity on a routing service control point (RSCP) that indicates that this RSI Host has the capability to become an active RSI, wherein an active RSI is an RSI Host that is running the RSI.

  • Patent number: 6434169
Abstract: A relay device associated with each end point modem in a data communication network provides a system for transporting data over a communication channel employing voice compression. Each relay device exchanges relevant parameter information with its associated modem and with each other in order to negotiate compatible data transfer conditions. The protocol exchange between each relay and its associated modem will typically include the calculation of inter-loop delay values for echo cancellation and line probing for line equalization or bandwidth optimization. Supported data rates, modulation type and encoding information is also exchanged. The invention provides a system for full duplex transmission of data over modems while saving on bandwidth because of voice compression techniques.
