Abstract: A surgical handpiece having two coaxial tubes or channels mounted within a body. The first tube is used for aspiration and is smaller in diameter than the second tube so as to great an annular passage between the first and second tube. The annular passage communicates with a pumping chamber formed between two electrodes. The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of the surgical fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling the liquid downstream of the pumping chamber out of the annular passage. The electrodes are insulated from each other.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to ophthalmic compositions containing a gelling amount of a combination of galactomannan polysaccharides and borates. The compositions gel or partially gel upon administration to the eye. The present invention also discloses methods of topical ophthalmic administration of the compositions to the eye.
Abstract: A surgical handpiece and tip having two coaxial tubes or channels mounted within a body. The first tube is used for aspiration and is smaller in diameter than the second tube so as to create an annular passage between the first and second tube. The annular passage communicates with a pumping chamber formed between two electrodes. The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of the surgical fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling the liquid downstream of the pumping chamber out of the annular passage. The distal end of the annular gap is sealed by a nozzle at the distal ends of the first and second tube and a plurality of orifices or ports may be formed in the nozzle. As the expanding gas is propelled down the annular gap, the gas/liquid stream is forced out of the distal orifice in a controlled and directed manner.
Abstract: A surgical handpiece having a tube used to inject heated surgical fluid for liquefying a cataractous lens. A portion of the tube is enlarged to form a pumping chamber. The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of the surgical fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling the liquid downstream of the pumping chamber out of the second tube. The pumping chamber may use a pair of electrodes. To control the expulsion of the fluid, valves are placed on either side of the boiling chamber.

Abstract: Disclosed is a two-step method of making soft, high refractive index, acrylic ophthalmic device materials. In the first step, a copolymer containing pendant oxirane groups is formed by copolymerizing one or more aryl acrylic hydrophobic monomers with one or more compounds of the formula
wherein
X is H or CH3; and
n is 1-4.
In the second step, the copolymer containing pendant oxirane groups formed in the first step is reacted with a compound of the formula
W—T—H
wherein
W is H, CH3(CH2)a, or Z(OCH2CH2)b;
a is 0-3;
b is 1-5;
Z is H, or CH3(CH2)p;
p is 0-3; and
T is O, NH, S; provided that if T≠O, then W≠H.
Abstract: This invention relates to the topical ocular use of non-peptide bradykinin receptor antagonists for the treatment of human ocular pain, neovascularization, corneal haze, allergy and inflammatory diseases.
Abstract: Methods of synthesizing 9-Halo-13,14-dihydroprostaglandins useful in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension are disclosed. Also disclosed are ophthalmic, pharmaceutical compositions comprising such prostaglandins.
Abstract: Ophthalmic, otic and nasal compositions containing a new class of antibiotics (e.g., moxifloxacin) are disclosed. The compositions preferably also contain one or more anti-inflammatory agents. The compositions may be utilized to treat ophthalmic, otic and nasal conditions by topically applying the compositions to the affected tissues. The compositions and methods of the invention are particularly useful in the treatment of acute otitis externa infections attributable to one or both of two newly identified Microbacterium species, Microbacterium otitidis and Microbacterium alconae.

Abstract: Water-soluble borate-polyol complexes are useful as buffers and/or antimicrobials in aqueous ophthalmic compositions, including those containing polyvinyl alcohol. These compositions have greater antimicrobial activity than comparable compositions containing typical borate buffers and unexpectedly increase the antimicrobial efficacy of other antimicrobial agents when used in combination. In addition, use of the boratepolyol complexes avoids the incompatibility problem typically associated with the combination of borate buffer and polyvinyl alcohol; therefore, the compositions disclosed herein may also contain polyvinyl alcohol.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to viscoelastic systems comprising a combination of a galactomannan polysaccharide containing composition and borate containing composition. The two compositions gel or partially gel upon combination. The present invention also discloses methods of using the systems during surgery and, in particular, eye surgery.
Abstract: An infusion control system having a flexible, collapsible infusion container. The container can be compressed between rollers or plate so at to pressurize the container. Such a system allows for rapid pressure response rates without the need of venting devices or air filtering. The may also include an irrigation flow sensor. The sensor may be placed in the control console or in the infusion handpiece. Irrigation flow measurements provided by the sensor allows the control system to vary irrigation pressure and/or flow, aspiration pressure and/or flow and power supplied to the handpiece more accurately than sensors that monitor aspiration flow.

Abstract: Contact lens care compositions for the treatment of hard contact lenses are disclosed. The compositions are useful for rinsing, cleaning, disinfecting and storing of hard contact lenses. The compositions contain an unique gelling system involving galactomannan polysaccharides and borates to allow for the conditioning of the lens when it is reinserted in the eye of the user. Methods of using these compositions are also disclosed.
Abstract: A method for determining the propensity of an intraocular lens material to prevent posterior capsule opacification is disclosed. The method involves contacting a sample of an IOL material having the shape of an IOL optic with collagen to form a contact area, incubating the sample in a liquid composition comprising lens epithelial cells, determining whether lens epithelial cells grow on the collagen in the contact area.

Abstract: The present invention relates to use of prostaglandin E receptor agonists and partial agonists to stimulate mucin secretion to treat dry eye, keratoconjunctivitis, Sjogren's syndrome and related ocular surface diseases.
Abstract: A method for determining the propensity of an intraocular lens material to prevent posterior capsule opacification is disclosed. The method involves incubating replicate samples of an IOL material with collagen IV, washing off any loosely bound collagen IV. Following the washing step, one sample is counted to determine the amount of collagen IV that remains adhered to the IOL material. A second sample is further processed prior to counting by subjecting it to a desorption step and a further washing step.
